'The grapevine' means the gossip network. Someone saw your girl with another guy, they told someone, that person told someone, etc, etc. and it eventually made it's way back to you. Grape vines grow long and twisty, not in a straight line, so it became a metaphor for how gossip winds and twists before it reaches your ears.

This is one of Marvin Gaye's opuses, the second I'd definitely recommend is What's Going On, that song was on the same album as Inner City Blues, another great song you reacted to, and it is an incredible take on issues of race, police brutality, and the search for peace, love and understanding. A must in Marvin Gaye's catalog.

@@sharians-bluesky I do hate it, and it does happen a lot in music, but I'm also starting to find a lot of youths (teens to 30s) in today's music that do find the deeper meaning, or at least try their hardest to understand, like Tim and Fred, but also pop and rap artist prodigies like Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, the Creator, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. If anything, the younger generation has to fight more than ever to fix the problems in this country (and the world) that the preceding 20th century generations just abandoned for them to deal with.

Why was the album What's Going On shelved in the 1st place?
@josephhart7933
@josephhart7933 3 жыл бұрын
@@juliemcdaniel499 because the album didn't stick with the Motown formula of love songs and dance music, and not be very controversial. The album was and is very topical. It speaks about war and racism and the environment, things that Berry Gordy wanted to avoid speaking out on. Motown was successful up to that point by appealing to both black and white teenagers and Berry Gordy didn't want to loose the whites. But as they said the times they are a changing. Also Marvin had taken control over the project and that's another reason Gordy didn't want to release it. He ran Motown like a car assembly line, with him in control of everything and Marvin was changing that ,before at Motown you sang what you were given whether you liked it or not. The Supremes didn't like Where did our love go, but they weren't given a choice.

Marvin!!!! One of the greatest of all-time. Truly an Icon. I remember the day he died. I was only about 9 or 10 years old, but I bawled my eyes out. So senseless and tragic.

For his masterpiece, listen to "What's Going On", the WHOLE ALBUM. Really a deep experience. Just for yourselves, since it's too long to react to here, I guess. It used to be that a whole album was one complete work of art, and that listening to parts only isn't what the artist intended. For example, the Beatles, Sergeant Pepper, and Pink Floyd, most of their catalogue. Just experience it!

Gladys Knight & The Pips were the first to release this as a single in 1967, but Smokey and The Miracles recorded it first. in 1966. They didn't release it as a single until 1968. Marvin's version was recorded in 1967 but wasn't put out as a single until 1968. A band called Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded a version of it released in 1970. It's interesting to listen to all versions just for comparison and to see how many ways this song could be flipped. Marvin's entire catalog is amazing. A couple of favorites that come to mind right now are Ain't That Peculiar, Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby, Can I get a Witness, I'll Be Doggone, Trouble Man, Distant Lover. Pick one and take a listen then keep going!
