Fun fact: That homophobic stuff in the Kings James bible was added after 1900, my grandmothers version from 1890 did not have it. Food for thought. Also how short of span things went from being tolerated to horrific. FYI

Hey guys! For some insight as to how such relations were thought of back in the day, check out this passage from Marlowe’s play Edward II, published in 1594: Leave now to oppose thyself against the king, Thou seest by nature he is mild and calm, And seeing his mind so dotes on Gaveston, Let him without controlment have his will, The mightiest kings have had their minions, Great Alexander loved Ephestion, The conquering Hector, for Hilas wept, And for Patroclus stern Achilles drooped, And not kings only, but the wisest men, The Roman Tully loved Octavis, Grave Socrates, wild Alcibiades: Then let his grace, whose youth is flexible, And promiseth as much as we can wish, Freely enjoy that vain light-headed earl, For riper years will wean him from such toys. In other words, “It’s just a phase!”

I binged this the day it came out and honestly it's AMAZING! I'm very picky about period dramas but this is just stunning. The costumes, the settings, the dialogue, the ACTING. It's a wonderful show and I hope you enjoy it. I was wondering when you'd react to it! Have fun, and the rauchiness is on its way!!

I would say the reason James felt so brazen to be openly queer in public was because he was an absolute monarch who had complete authority and was not only above the law, he WAS the law. Anyone else would have been much more discrete because homosexuality was illegal in England at the time, thanks to Henry VIII a century or so before. Also, I’m not sure this series accurately portrays James’ behaviour at his court. There were certainly rumours of his preferences with male favourites but I doubt he was openly kissing them. Historians debate to this day what his sexuality was. He was known to have at least one female lover in his youth and had several children with his Queen, as well as his likely affairs with Somerset, Buckingham and one man before them.

Back then many ppl didnt care about other's sexuality. That changed in Victorian times for their contemporary culture and also subverted their own history to try and portray it like "hating gays and gays in hiding" was always a thing when it actually wasnt at all

Such a fun, naughty show this is going to be! 🔥 Another series you might consider, based in the same time period, is TNT's Will. The HOT actor playing Somerset in Mary & George played Will Shakespeare, and the show also had Jamie Campbell Bower (Vecna from Stranger Things) playing Christopher Marlowe, who was a debaucherous gay character unable to commit fully to his lover (Thomas Walsingham, son of Lord Walsingham) because he is tormented by the loss of the older man whom he loved in his youth. It was a beautifully laid out show. (Though, being set in Elizabethan times, it had more than it's fair share of religious persecution and torture scenes.) Still worth a watch!

Have 2 episodes left to watch. What other gay period pieces were you referring to in the into? @7:28 right after walking through that first room, briefly the door was opened to the second path and think that was the gay room since looked like there was a guy on all 4's. So that guy took George through the tamer of the two rooms.

Just a little note - King James I/VI did not "write" the King James bible - he commissioned a group of scholars to translate. It is quite homophobic (which is probably poor translation and contiues to be the basis of poor translation) - but it might have been a way for the translation scholars to send a message to the king rather than a power play by the king. Nonetheless, while much of the legacy of this translation is quite wonderful, the homophobia is quite horrible.

it's great to see a more realistic representation of that time period before other sexual identities apart from heterosexuality were condemned. bodies were just bodies, and as mary said, it was also currency. it's best to watch this show without our modern morals and expectations on ppls behavior, just let go and enjoy how outrageous it can be lol

Is not that this time was more free with queer people. Its about power. On the status of a king or really rich kids in a school of status, these are the kind of people that had the liberty to be queer. Would be a much different story for poor people who were queer back then.

I watched them all finished yesterday. You’re right. I read that too he almost doubled down and was a hypocrite. He condemned “sodomites” as we were known then to death in most cases. It was only because he was king that he “got away with it”. It was a great show and an interesting story. I like you thought there were some hot men occasionally.. but back then men and most people weren’t that attractive…… not by today’s standards. Bodies are more toned and broader as we evolved. Diet ect and lifestyles are different. As most people only lived till average of 30-40 range and rare cases 50 maybe. And am I the only that is thinking……how the hell did they prepare for sex back then?!? lol as they used to wash in basins and not a full wash just their parts soo 🤢..

nick is amazing in it, I wish the story was more his but not sure why the show kept emphasizing on making it Mary's story, tbh kinda got really annoying for me in the end,,,,, there was just so much potential with george and least to say NICK OWNS THE ROLE, just why not let it be his,,, like they kept trying to stir the ship in marys direction when it makes 0 sense. No matter cant wait to see yalls review of the show overall it was really enjoyable tho it just a lot of thing made me mad which could have been avoided lol
