Tony Stark. Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Son of legendary inventor and weapons contractor Howard Stark. When Tony Stark is assigned to give a weapons presentation to an Iraqi unit led by Lt. Col. James Rhodes, he's given a ride on enemy lines. That ride ends badly when Stark's Humvee that he's riding in is attacked by enemy combatants. He survives - barely - with a chest full of shrapnel and a car battery attached to his heart. In order to survive he comes up with a way to miniaturize the battery and figures out that the battery can power something else. Thus Iron Man is born. He uses the primitive device to escape from the cave in Iraq. Once back home, he then begins work on perfecting the Iron Man suit. But the man who was put in charge of Stark Industries has plans of his own to take over Tony's technology for other matters. Written by halo1k

Super excited for you to dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)! It is the biggest cinema achievement of our lives; starting in 2008 with Iron Man, it has culminated into 23 films as of 2020 and they are still making more! As I haven't seen this reaction yet, I can't be 100% certain if you watched until the very end, but with most MCU films, it's always important to watch until the very end of the credits because they like to have small scenes that tease or setup the next film during the pre-credits, mid-credits, or post-credits. So hopefully you did get to see that here. Excited to watch!

I’m not a bigot I’m just always curious to know where people are from :) (and many of my ancestors fled to the US to escape persecution) FYI you should totally dive into the marvel cinematic universe (MCU) now. Glad you’re starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Only 23 more to go! 😄 After you see Tony’s arc, you can’t see anyone BUT Robert Downey Jr. in the role (as with the other heroes (and villains) in their roles. They took a big gamble on starting the MCU with a lesser-known character like Iron Man, but RDJ really MADE that character.

For the most part, a lot of the Marvel movie villains leave a lot to be desired. There are some exceptions and they do get better as the MCU grows. The first Iron Man movie was a huge risk because it was the first movie produced by Marvel itself and the casting of Robert Downy Jr. was controversial as he was seen as a risk himself (because of his history with drugs). But Iron Man became a success and RDJ got a new lease on life because of it.

@Carl Coetzee First, while Blade is a Marvel character, he wasn't the first Marvel movie made by Marvel Studios. He was made by Fox. Iron Man was the first made by Marvel Studios. Second, Blade is an anti-hero, which isn't the kind of role-model a lot of people want to have for their kids (think Punisher). There were other black superhero movies before Black Panther, but to my knowledge, Black Panther was the first to truly celebrate African culture. And Blade wasn't the first black superhero movie (or anti-hero) to make it to the big screen. The Meteor Man was came out in 1993 and was a good movie.

Oh and just so you're aware, when you dive into more MCU films, Terrence Howard, the man who played Rhodey in this film, was replaced by Don Cheadle for all future films because Terrence and Robert Downey Jr. didn't get along. Furthermore, when you watch the next film in the MCU, The Incredible Hulk, you'll see that Bruce Banner/Hulk is played by Edward Norton. In all future films, the character is played by Mark Ruffalo because Edward Norton was being too controlling and they fired him. Just thought I'd clear that up, haha.

@@513bpmcauley I am not sure where you get that from. The VC were responsible for Tony's injury during a visit to the war zone and his being captured and working with Yinsen (comic book origin story in the 60's) but the Ten Rings refers in the movie to a classic Iron Man arch-nemesis who wear s ten rings on his fingers. (No name mentioned here since Mary is unfamiliar with the comic book history of the character - for these purposes she should just consider that this was an easter egg).

I don't think Tony's real motivation was saving refugees. When he heard his weapons were being used by the same people that held him captive, and heard the town name Gulmira, he immediately recognized it as Yinsen's village. Since Yinsen basically saved his life, Stark was just repaying the favor by eliminating the weapons that Obie had sold them without Tony's knowledge. They were to be used against the enemies of the US, not used against US personnel or civilians.
@benlee8436
@benlee8436 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffburnham6611 Those things are not mutually exclusive. In your interpretation, Tony's redemption wouldn't happen, as he'd still be thinking as a businessman in terms of transactions and would have learned nothing. Rather, through his experience and his time with Yinsen he understood the effect his actions had on innocent people and gained compassion, a necessary component to becoming a hero. If he didn't care about the refugees then why take so much effort to protect them? Because he now sees them as people and not 'collateral damage'. Hopefully that doesn't come off as a lecture!

I definitely could see the pain on your face in certain scenes as it became a little too real at times. I appreciate you keeping it together and giving us your perspective. A few things I will point out on how good Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) is at acting is that at times, he likes to eat in scenes. The eating is totally off script but RDJ pulls it off like it's natural. Also, you see that Tony Stark has an ice pack on his left arm in this film. That turns out to be a nagging injury for Tony Stark in future films (no spoilers... don't worry) and RDJ does a great acting job remembering this and acting this injury. Watch for it.

To clarify, the thing in his chest isn't a fake heart - it's an electromagnet stopping shrapnel from entering his heart and killing him, that he got from that attack on the convoy. Tony just replaces the rudimentary car battery set up with a miniaturized version of the arc reactor at the Stark Industries factory, and then also uses it as the power plant for the Iron Man suits. If you liked this movie, I think you're really gonna enjoy Tony Stark's character arc across all of the MCU films. He really grows and changes as a character over time.

None of this matters if the characters and the story arent alright. Comics have always been kind of niche, though, and the replacement of a small number of writers can have a huge impact on the industry as a whole. Also, toxic cultures have a tendency to purge healthy members, allowing the toxicity to spread. I'm hoping they can learn to learn from each other, where the movies can maybe purge a bad habit or two (e.g. less cookie-cutter villain and hero retreads), and the comics can learn about what people are like - how they think, react, and what motivates them (both customers and in-world inhabitants). Both comics and comic-based movies are always at their best when they serve the same function as a good sci-fi: force us to think of old problems in new ways, to question our motivations, to inspire us and warn us of the future, etc.. And if they forget all of that, at least we'll always have Iron Man through Endgame.

I wouldn't have really called Tony "evil" or a bad person. Just someone extremely gifted following in his father's footsteps making weapons he thought were making the world safe, and making a boatload of money because of it. Once he figured out Stane had them double dealing and Stark International was selling to both sides, including to terrorists, he knew he had to stop that.
@WhatKindOfNameNow
@WhatKindOfNameNow 4 жыл бұрын
Hell, even before he figured out Stand was double dealing, when he came face to face with the fact that, regardless of how, terrorists were getting his weapons, he decided to pull the plug on making weapons. I think your description of Tony in the beginning is pretty accurate. He's a gifted man following what he thought were the expectations of his late father that he never got to reconcile with (and you can be sure Stane had a hand in Tony's decision to continue the family business).

For all those writing "Tony is not evil", followed by explanations or whatever: He builds and sells weapons, which is not good nor evil PER SE, but is negligent in controlling how and where those are sold to. He starts being the cause who ignores his own consequences, and that is... "not good". "Evil" maybe is too strong a word (albeit an understandable one), but he is "responsible" for the use of his weapons. The whole movie is in fact Tony's atonement: his weapons are used for evil, he becomes a weapon against any other weapon. In an easier way: he starts thinking about (some) consequences. Side note(s): - To ensure there are no wars, the answer is NOT building a bigger weapon. - "The sharpest sword is the one that never leaves her scabbard"
@LOTRFAN33
@LOTRFAN33 4 жыл бұрын
I basically agree with you but reality is that there is no way he can design weapons and run a company without delegating. Even just running a company of any decent size, like Starks industries seems to be, would be impossible without delegating authority and thus keeping full control. Now I know that Tony seems to focus a lot more on the designing weapons than at running the company and as such delegated too much power to his "right hand" an trusted him without looking better into if he was "responsible", loyal etc person. In that regard he is definitely guilty however not evil in any "way, shape or form". Regarding the "not building a bigger weapon", reality is that someone will make weapons and use them against your country and any government letting their country be destroyed because they wanted to take the "high ground" and not make any weapons, is irresponsible.

Fun fact - the character of Nick Fury dates back to the 60's in the Marvel Comics. But he is a white guy with an eye patch, originally a commando in World War II, and then later the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. a super spy agency. In the early 2000's, the character was re-imagined in the comics and they made him African-American and they decided they wanted him to look like a Samuel L. Jackson type. Then, when the Iron Man movie came out in 2008 it was an easy choice who to cast in the role. LOL.

If you're going to react to the whole MCU, it's best you watch them in the order they were released theatrically. there are people that choose to watch them based on the period of time they take place but it kind messes you up with the mid credits and after credits cuz they always set up the next movie. So a movie like Captain Marvel takes place within the 80's but the after credits scene doesn't. All the MCU movies have after credit scenes. some also have mid credit scenes. so the order of the movies are... (Phase 1) Iron Man The Incredible Hulk (2008) starring Edward Norton who was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo Iron Man 2 Thor Captain America The first Avenger The Avengers (End of Phase 1) (Phase 2) Iron Man 3 Thor: The Dark World Captain America: The Winter Soldier Guardians of the Galaxy Avengers: Age of Ultron Ant-Man (End of Phase 2) (Phase 3) Captain America: Civil War Doctor Strange Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Spider-Man: Homecoming Thor: Ragnarok Black Panther Avengers: Infinity War Ant-Man and the Wasp Captain Marvel Avengers Endgame (End of Phase 3) Spider-Man: Far from Home (Phase 3 Epilogue) (Phase 4 but not yet released) Black Widow The Eternals Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings (The terrorist group in Iron Man names themselves the Ten Rings) Doctor Strange in the multiverse of Madness Thor: Love and Thunder Black Panther 2

Tony Stark was NOT an evil weapons manufacturer, but did have issues with zero accountably. He is correct to say that you do need weapons to keep the peace and personal freedoms. Imagine if the guy that lead the Ten Rings was the only one with the weapons. All those people that were kicked around would be dead as well as others. The weapons of the Iron Man suit is what saved those people. Without good people and weapons used responsibly, a dictator would emerge and just rule and kill anyone he/she/it wanted to.
