I will never forget that when I was in the Navy one of my buddies made me a couple MP3 CDs with a bunch of music on it and I had never heard Tool before. I happened to be driving across the US from Virginia to California and I had 10 days to travel and get to my new command. I decided to visit the Grand Canyon on my way there and I just so happened to get to the Tool part of one of the CDs. I listened to this song for the first time in my life while standing at the edge of the canyon and it honestly was an out of body experience. I will never forget that feeling.

I didn't like Sober at all and never fully listened to H, the big two that were overplayed on the radio. Hey as it crazy as it seems. I was working on a sitcom right next door and I was wondering why there was security posted outside. Full on security through out . Sony studios for your info. What blows me away most with the this song is the lyrics are in the Fibonacci Sequence 0,1,1,2,3,5,8 etc black - and white - all I see - in my infancy etc create a song around that concept is brilliance to me like the way sprouts of a pineapple or leaves on a tree the biological aspect shown through music is beyond art! The low end pulsing effect is Justin The bassist using a Digitech Bass Whammy Pedal. He uses it in many of his solos. The intro and outro of Right in Two is one of my favorite applications of this pedal. You two would really enjoy that song coming from the perspective of being people of faith.

i honestly, hand on my heart, still get chills listening to this 20 years after i heard it for the first time. Cant really think of another band that does that to me of the top of my head. Its the same with 46&2 and thats 25 years. I've seen Tool live 3 times. twice in 2001 and once in 2006. Damn im happy i have that experience in my life. They are just special. Maynard is usually in the back of the mix, done on purpose. He says his voice is just another instrument thus should be in the mix with the guitars, bass etc. Even live he stands at the back of the stage beside the drums usually Oh the synth sound is the Bass going through a Pitch shifter I think. Vocals are background cause Maynard doesn't want to be seen as a front man. He's more comfortable with they band leading the song. This song is math 100% through and through. I can't do the explanation any justice but there's tons of info out on it. Fibonacci sequence. Time signature changes and lyrics all follow a numerical theme.

The part at the end where he points to the ceiling is one of my favorite parts of any tool song ever. It's your second time through that final drive and they pull Maynard's vocals way down to the gut of the mix and you feel as though you're being swallowed alive in the sound with him. Great reaction, I always find it funny when people first listening to Tool are ready to roast them in the first 2 minutes or so, but when they get to the end of the 9+ minute song their opinion completely changes. Like... the song is 9 minutes for a reason. They're going to take you somewhere and it's going to take time and be a journey, but every song they make has a purpose behind it. I've been listening to Tool for over 20 years now and the hardest thing to get used to at the beginning was the vocal mixing, with Maynard being way in the back but that's intentional... he's is just another instrument in the band and has moments to shine and moments to blend. Even in concert he's often tucked away in the back, he's not front in center demanding attention from the crowd. Tool's entire catalog is worth visiting so keep making these videos, they're great and I love seeing musicians react to new (to them) music because they pick up on a lot of the little nuances.

The single most important ingredient to most TOOL songs and it’s something that unfortunately a lot of song reviewers and/or reactors miss is the deep emotional message the lyrics are expressing. Maynard hears the music first then drops the lyrics into the song and matches the lyrics and his vocals to the music as if he was the 4th instrument in the band. Trust me there songs where Maynard destroys the mic but it has to be within the structure and feel of the music and the lyrics he created. Also this song is structured and performed to follow the mathematical structure of the Fibonacci Sequence, which is why it felt like it started from the bottom and worked its way to top which was the end of the song. There is always a purpose to how TOOL create their songs, those who get it and have the mental capacity to understand the songs including the lyrics which explain the tones and rhythms of the music love the band and appreciate the out of this world talent these muthufickas have. Good evening from Cornwall! I'm loving your reactions (I only just discovered you today). What you need to know about Tool is they want their work (it's much more than just 'music') to be a tool which will help us evolve mentally and spiritually. The lyrics often have multiple meanings, which are often puerile or uncomfortable at first look, but have deeper levels which should work subliminally, like neuro-linguistic programming or CBT therapy. Many times, the different instruments are playing completely different time signatures which roll and flow around each other before coming together, when they all play in unison, which just makes things explode! This song has a few meanings, but is held together by the fibbonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence of numbers, also called the golden ratio, where two numbers added together results in the third, which they use with the syllables in the lyrics here. Tool are deeper than the Mariana trench. You'll LOVE the rhythms in Jambi.

In pop music the vocals are on top because that's what they're selling, and the music is usually non existent, but both the music and vocals are integral to Tool so they're mixed together especially on this album. People recommend looking at the lyrics, don't do it on your first listen unless you really want to, feel it first, figure out the meaning later.

I’d recommend the Grudge from the same album. That song is another masterpiece. Also pretty much every tool track has crazy drums and bass. They are very rhythmic.

In my case the more I listened to a Tool song, the more I end up appreciating it. Their music doesn’t depreciate with more listens. However, it will cause other music to pale in comparison. Also, watching reactions like these makes me feel like I’m listening again for the first time

What has been called "grunge" music was always more about the feeling and emotion and not the "chops." Tool came around about that same time and their first album, while not grunge, is also more about emotion and feeling than "chops." But, what Tool did after was enhance the overall "chops" so that the feeling and emotion come from ALL of the instruments (voice, drums, guitar, and bass) and not just from the words and singing, nor just one particular instrument. Grunge was about meaningful words sung with emotion surrounded by warm, fuzzy, distorted music played with precision. Tool has become a spiritual, soulful, whole body experience surrounded by precision musicianship that envelopes you in a trancelike state taking you on an astral jouney of your conscious and subconscious mind without any one instrument having greater "chops" over any other so that they all work cohesively and equally to guide you along. ~Be Blessed

i’m only 6 minutes in and already loving this. this is how i’ve listened to new Tool music since 93. i listen probably 4-5 times before i really start to process everything, and my first listen is always just sitting there, eyes closed, getting a feel for it. i try not to single anything out and just get… kind of a big picture feeling. then i go back and listen for individual parts, lyrics, etc. but for me the most important thing about their music is how it makes me feel, so that’s where i start 🤷🏼‍♀️ if you ask 20 different Tool fans what the most important thing is, they’ll tell you 20 different things. there’s a lot of “you can’t possibly understand the music without the lyrics” and “it’s the structure of the song that’s vital” and this is more important than that, and you’re not listening right, and blah blah blah. what’s “most important” is that you listen to it how you want, and get what you want or need from it. who cares what the gatekeepers or snobs think? and yeah, there are a lot of those when it comes to Tool 🙄 they can be a bit… ugh, i won’t even go there. but yeah. try to ignore the elitists and just enjoy it 💜
