I was blown away with the slowing timing of the very beginning part, then the polyrhythms and the time signature of the verse the first time I watched it. How can musicians not be!?

I prefer a different form of phrase... "There is no one better." That leaves room for others to be just as good, and also leaves the discussion open to statements like "in this genre" or "during their era of music" or "given the technology available at the time". I really dislike "absolute" statement....because I dislike leaving room for someone else to have an opinion that I was wrong. I have yet to see anyone do better at what Danny does. And I would wager that even Danny would LOVE to see someone improve on what he has built. Once you've seen it done, it suddenly becomes much easier to achieve. I'm reminded of an old story about Microsoft Windows. I heard it a long time ago and certainly have the names wrong, but the general idea is: One of Microsofts early employees took a tour of an HP facility...maybe during an interview or something... During this interview he saw, on a computer screen, the first version of software that was able to have sub sections of "windows" on top of windows..We take multiple open tabs as a given these days...but there was a time when no one had even realized that it (only being able to see one screen...on one screen...at a time) was a problem worth addressing. This person took the general idea back to Microsoft...told them what he saw, and eventually beat everyone else to market with a totally new software that gave massive boosts productivity... but here's the thing: HP had no such software. What ever this person saw, they had misinterpreted. But, because he "had seen it" his team got to work recreating it and overcoming every obstacle, due in large part because they believed someone else ALREADY HAD fixed most of the problems and they were playing catch-up. Point being, I would love to see someone invent an improved technique and then watch what Danny does with it. The problem leaders in a field often run into is that there isn't anyone in front of them. Watching someone in front of you make mistakes and innovations is a MASSIVELY helpful thing.

I don't believe he is thinking anything when he plays, You simply cannot think about all of that, it's impossible. That is the magic of playing like that. It takes a foundation of incredible skill and muscle memory and theory but to play like Danny you just have to clear your mind surrender your well practiced body to the music . The thing about Tool is, they write musical compositions, not just songs. Each member of the band is a master at their instrument, including Maynard. They each put their talent and expertise equally into their songs, and all of them are highlighted in them. It’s a masterfully working cohesive unit of true artists, and poets.

I also want to say, that part of Danny Carrey's expertise, isn't always doing something CRAZY technical that no one else could reproduce. (And not that he doesn't do those things too, because he does). What's amazing is that he writes such great rhythm compositions that add SO MUCH FEELING to the song itself. Like, you can listen to GREAT guitarists, but not a tenth of them can make you feel like a David Gilmour would. Here, we have a man who is not only technically gifted with the ability to play masterful tempos and polyrythms, but he is also just a master at composition itself, adding so much thought and feeling into the song. This is why he is more than great, and to many Tool fans, a fuckin' legend. :) Loved the video dudes!

A little more insight into Danny's kit. He uses a combination of electronic pads and conventional drums. The pads with the designs on the heads are Mandala pads ( which he helped design and develop). He has 7 of those 4 to his left and 3 to the right. Each pad has 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric circles, each of these 7 zones can be programmed individually to a different tone so just like a regular drum the tone gets higher the closer to the rim you hit. You will notice at the start that there are 3 distinct tones on the pad depending on where on the head he hits it. Accuracy also comes into play. When he's playing the rim shots on his snare, the pad he's playing the triplet pattern on is a Korg Wd-1 wave drum, programmed to sound like a tabla. He has thousands of sounds that he can program the pads to sound like. As he says, it expands his vocabulary. This video was made shortly before Danny's 59th Birthday. He was even in a country band with Jeff Buckley in the late 80s before either of them blew up. Now both are legends. But he still plays a lot of other styles. @@HiddenHandMedia yes, I’m positive. I don’t know the name of the band before, and there are no recordings. It was a gigging band in the 80s in LA. They both were in tons of bands back then, even multiple bands at the same time, and both are very versatile in their playing styles and interests, so it’s actually not too surprising they ended up in a band together back then. But yeah, I’m totally positive. He’s said it in interviews before, and if you really want a specific citation I can give you right away now, you can watch the interview with Bill Manspeaker from Green Jello on the Trash Talkers KZbin channel. He was close friends with Tool back then, and he mentions it in that interview from what I can remember. I wish there was video of them playing together though, that would’ve been awesome to see.

Tool for me is a band where the drums is the lead instrument. If you listen to what the guitar and bass play is fairly simple and repetitive it actually speaks a lot about Dany’s writing. When you really break it down it’s amazing the patterns he writes and how they can be broken down mathematically. The fact he’s mixing rock, African and eastern styles in one song should tell you about his vast abilities. Plus I love his use of volume, those cross stick pattern swells in loudness and softness.

Danny Carey is one of the best drummers in the world recognized by hundreds of the greats. He was in top 10 drummers hall of fame way back in the day. Legend But I gotta say as they got older their skills continued to improve, the timings, the complex rhythms the unique sounds and style. Watch Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus, 10,000 days then this album Fear Innoculum. You will see the massive improvement over time

I’m a worship drummer, and while I’m nowhere near Danny’s talent, I use poly and fills like this. It has its place. The slow builds and explosive fills Danny does are so impressive. Edit: Tool doesn’t use a click track either

Another thing to remember when watching that video is that Danny Carey was 58 when that was recorded. Some musicians "lose it" as they get older, but he has spent his life becoming a master of his craft. He is at the top of his game still at this age. If you want to hear Danny Carey in a different context, he also plays drums for a live jam band called Volto! It's more of a jazz fusion style.

He is a full on Jazz drummer too that is where he started. This is his style for Tool. I watched Chambers trying to play to this and I was a bit sad. He never sits in a pocket playing a straight pattern.

The one point that is very much understated is Danny's creativity! There are maybe a handful of drummers that can pull this song off properly, but to create this masterpiece or anything close to it??? He is a beauty! You can see the enjoyment!

16:21 interesting that you caught that. It seemed like he was so excited that he nailed that section that he got a little distracted. Kinda like at the end of recording a guitar track or something when you play it right the whole song, and the pressure of recording makes the last section more anxious, trying it keep it perfect. I can only imagine a scenario like this. Live, pro drum shot. He knew he was on the spot. The fact that he didnt falter more is incredible in itself.

Danny Carey studied classical Indian tabla drumming for a few years so that definitely added to the vocabulary. (Edit: You're right, we thought you were going to be more impressed 😂 But we didn't know we were messin' with a gospel chops guy!)

That is very true! Carey is a world-studied percussionist, especially Indian percussion. Being of Indian decent and recognizing his use of tabla etc. impresses the hell out of me and even our percussionists. These guys are in NO WAY accredited or qualified to "critique" a known master of percussion. But hey that's my opinion I suppose. This critique was garbage! They SHOULD be impressed by Danny Carey!

The members of Tool are all amazingly talented musicians in their own right but when all 4 are playing together it’s straight up magic. I was hooked 10 seconds into the first song I heard from them 30 years ago and to this day my hairs stand on end, my eyes become moist and my head feels warm and fuzzy. Fucking love these guys. By the way….I was at this concert in Boston, 3rd row. I took my 14 year old son with me. It was his first concert ever. I believe I have ruined any live performance he’ll ever see in his future. 🤘🏼🌀

Danny is a versatile drummer; as with the other band members he writes his drums to fit the song, not always be the spotlight. He just happens to be good enough to have his share of the spotlight without trying to. They all are geniuses in their own right...

About that snare!! During 2019 Alan Van Kleef was contacted and then commissioned by Danny Carey to create a drum kit and snare drum for him. Danny was recommended to speak to Alan via long time friend and VK snare drum owner John Tempesta. After many discussions Alan went about creating the Monad Snare drum for Danny. The Monad snare drum is a 5mm B12 Cast Bell Bronze shell which has matching bronze VKast hoops. Danny Carey's 7 sided logo is laser engraved on every drum and appears 7 times on each shell. Shortly after the completion of the Monad (which was hand made in Sheffield, England), it was announced that a snare drum replica called "7empest" (after Tool's grammy award winning song) would be made available as part of a limited collection of 33 individual pieces. At the same time that the 7empest snare was launched, Alan was also developing the first complete 7empest drum set. Like the snare, the 7empest drums is a Monad replica in almost every way, except for the engravings.

He can play any style. He plays Miles Davis with 2 keyboardists, he can rock your face off with tunes like The Grudge or Aenema, he can do polyrythms like this, he plays what the music calls for, not just to show off. He is a master, and he comes from an alternate universe.
