In the late 1970s I lived in different places in Sonoma County CA & while living at "Heidi" cabin in Guernewood Park I got to know Rosemary Gladstar who then had a shop in Guerneville. I lived just south of Cotati CA at (now gone) Pioneer Motel & did an internship thru Sonoma State U. with Jeanine (Obrien, Parvati) Medvin, also an important natural healing author. Also met Jeannie Rose (Herbal Handbook for Farm & Stable) at a natural healing festival at a farm in Occidental CA off Occidental road. I rate Mary of Mary's Nest as top notch.

Mary you are my very favorite traditional homemaker/preparedness channel and I have recommended your channel to three people just this week. Thank you so much for taking your viewers under your wing and treating us as beloved neighbors. You never make me feel silly, however as I've learned more, you add little tips and more advanced recipes that keep me interested and learning even as my knowledge is increasing. That is such a skill, to apply to viewers of all levels. Not to mention, I often turn on your videos just for the company and the sweet hospitality you offer. In this time we are in, sitting in your Virtual kitchen and watching your sweet smile helps me feel calm and like I can do what needs to be done. Thank you for being the grandma so many of us didn't have but wish we had. If you are ever in the Pacific Northwest I would love to meet you in person ❤️❤️❤️

For clear glass bottles, you can paint them with acrylic enamel paint on the outside to protect the contents on the inside, just make sure the paint has cured properly and its complete washable. The bonus is you can customize it with a painted on label if you will use the same bottle for the same purpose over and over again.

Suggestion: if you have only a clear glass bottle, wrap the bottle in brown paper, like butchers paper or paper from a paper grocery bag. It wont necessarily block all of the light but it will block a lot of it. Or if you are feeling particularly crafty, use a black chalkboard paint that works on glass. Then you can also use a piece of chalk/chalk pen to write the contents and dates. Also want to say I love this channel. Mary you are an inspiration and and I have recommended your channel to everyone I know who might appreciate your knowledge. Thanks for sharing!! Edit: lol i wrote this while watching and just heard you mention putting it in a brown paper bag. Lol. I should have finished watching before posting. Lol. Oops 😬😂

Hi Mary! I enjoyed your video of making medicinal oils and salves. You are talking about the word SALVES. It is a word, which comes from the German word SALBE, which means salve or ointment. The English language originally comes from the German language. German is the mother language of English. Later the English language has adopted many words from other languages, which makes it the language of today. Love all your video they are so educational and money savings receipts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge... If you have access to sugar cane juice, I think it is good to use as liquid replacement. Maybe, 1:1 with water... Or complete water replacement if you are int sweet side. Also, I think you can strain it with the cloth, so there is no need to double strain if ever.

Today, I made this liquid from licorice. It tastes like medicine four caugh. I like that taste, that is why I made it. I bought organic licorice roots and made it. But, I could not add honey very much because licorice itself is so sweet. That is why it remains quite thin. I tasted one tablespoon and it truly is so strong that I felt abit dizzy. It is really a medicine (for caugh, digestive oroblems etc.) and even it tastes so good (if you in general like licorice), it is better not to take too much. Thank you! I am happy that now I can prepare my own organic medicine without any artificial stuff!

I just LOVE your videos! I like using clear glass for storage of syrups JUST IN CASE there is any growth of bacteria, I want to be able to see if there is anything undesirable going on. I then put them in drawstring bags to block the light. I do use amber or dark colored glass for vinegars and tonics/tinctures because BAD microbial activity is highly unlikely in those. I absolutely enjoy using recycled bottles. I don't drink but I put an ad on my local FB Groups asking for people to save me their "pretty" liquor bottles when they had finished the contents. The response was AMAZING!!! I got soooo many lovely bottles and people were glad to keep from adding them to a landfill.

I think honeysuckle has antibiotic properties similar to penicillin, I've heard of jellies and jams made from the berries of it... I ferment them into wine... syrup might be a good way of accessing the medecine of honeysuckle also. I think japanese honeysuckle is the most traditional one. Oh yeah and alternative sugar sources > alternative sweeteners. Glucose is really basic and is digested by practically everything, it's not "bad," it's the way it's used or produced that makes it healthy or unhealthy.

Thank you so much, Mary, for this video. It's always so relaxing to listen to you and we learn so much at the same time. :-) Regarding sirups and diabetes: you can substitute sugar 1:1 with birch sugar (xylitol). This can be used with diabetes type 1 and 2, as it does not influence the insulin levels. Beware, however, that it is poisonous for dogs, rabbits and ferrets.

Thank for the kind words. The good news is that honey doesn’t react with stainless steel so we don’t need to worry about using that when measuring it or using a teaspoon in our tea when we stir it. Actually, honey is the more ideal ingredient for syrups, especially for diabetics. Honey is unlike sugar or sweetners that have been altered as it aids your body in regulating blood sugar levels. I only use honey for my syrups for this reason, plus it empowers the syrup with honeys vast health benefits.

Hi Mary!! I love this - and have a question: For a ketogenic version do you have a recommendation? (I don't use agave because it's hard on the liver.) Do you think liquid allulose would work? If I remember correctly allulose is made from chicory. Thank you so much, I'm always happy when your notification pops up!! xo- Ana 💕
@MarysNest2 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! I have found that the alternative sweeteners don't work as well as the whole sweeteners. However, you could certainly try it - make a small amount - and see if the allulose thickens the syrup. At the very least, you would have more of a medicinal liquid than a syrup - sort of like a sweetened tincture. Love, Mary

If you need to eat keto it’s better to make tinctures.

Thanks for sharing. I may have not gotten the job after all. Saw it on a quiz I took about the hiring process for the company. They didn't tell me officially though.

Mary, I love your channel. To make a syrup with ginger and lemon as well as the thyme, do I simmer the ginger and lemon peel for 30 minutes first then put the thyme in for the last amount of time? Thank you for everything.

I’m just wondering, if a simmer is too high for oil infusing herbs why then heat so high here?? Isn’t that killing the ‘raw’ essence in the herbs? LOVE your videos, mostly because they come from accurate recipes not guesses. 🌿🙋🏻♀️

What kind of jar are you using there? Kilner’s?

To decant my syrup, I am simply using bottles that I recycled from other purposes. Love, Mary

Hi Sweet Mary, have you heard of, used or made horehound candy? It is great for a sore throat. But looking at the over the counter version lately I've noticed a ton of unnecessary ingredients. Please show us how and I recommend making some on a stick. Bc it is life saving for croup cough. Can Honey be used instead of sugar for the horehound?
