Idk, I always think back to how Goten, without saying a word, convinced Goku to visit King Kai when he has his energy funk. I like to think that Goten is a pretty good empath. I mean, he's not shown that much so I am working with the few times he actually does something on his own.

Bardock really got a beating from his grandson. It’s nice to see Goku trying to be a good son to his dad. It’s cool to see Goten be a mentor to his own grandfather by training him to overcome all of his previous failures. Bardock and Goten bonding is nice. I’m looking forward to when Beerus arrives and Bardock learns he is going to be a great-grandfather when everyone learns about Pan.

15:48 Goten might not have been expecting a heartfelt goodbye, but, for Bardock in this story, the casual "see you later, Goten" is basically the rough equivalent of such, honestly. Driving the point home is Bardock giving Goten that brief bit of advice, and actually acting like a grandpa. Plus, if you think about it, how casually he said it shows he knows that his grandkid isn't the baby he thought he was, possibly showing a subtle hint of pride towards his lineage. Maybe it's me overthinking things, but seems that way to me.

No I 100% think you're right. Bardock is a man who doesn't really do emotional stuff, unless Gine is around. But that moment shows the door is starting to open just a sliver to his grandson as well. I wonder what effect he'll have on Gohan too, be it in person or via a tougher Goten.

This is the most realistic Bardock story I've seen yet. Most of them have him go soft too soon. Don't get me wrong Bardock's stories are usually very heartwarming, but it's not usually a great interpretation of the character. This story, however, has the most realistic Bardock that I've seen yet. Kudos to you Masako!

I personally really love this series’s more character driven storyline. It just feels very DragonBall. Most of your WhatIf’s are great, but theres something about your December and April Fools specials that just hit closer to home when it comes to the original source material. Its about the journey, not the destination.

The idea this will change his personality a little in the years to come makes me happy, he won't just be Trunks' follower. In fact, it was at the mention of the effect training Bardock will have on him that made me realise... we're still only in the aftermath of the Buu Saga. Super's events haven't even began to be set in motion yet. I can only imagine Bardock's shock when Beerus arrives, as I'm sure he heard something about him while in HFIL for 4 decades. King Kai saying Goten kicks Bardock's ass every day gave me a really good laugh

I love how Bardock claims Goten is throwing a tantrum and beating on his grandpa when he struck first. All Goten did was finally speak his mind, and then defend himself. Turns out the best way to get through to a Saiyan is the stomach, just with a hard punch instead of food.

Not going to lie this is refreshing. It’s like being able to connect to a cultural and traditional root that happens in new generations, even today ( like all of the older lot that grew up in a less tech based world). Being able to make that connection through simply taking the time to understand, I really enjoyed this. Can’t wait for the next episode. Goten and Bardock works really well.

A side of this story I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying is Chichi and Goku's dynamic as a couple. Usually fans just make fun of them as dysfunctional or being in each other's goals way, but you really understand what makes the two work and how Chichi can support Goku emotionally. She doesn't just feed him, she helps him understand how he needs to give his father space and where he went wrong with ressurecting him.

I like how we've finally see Bardock kinda bonding with someone from his family, even if it is through them beating him up constantly, that's... more Saiyan like I suppose. Also love how Goten coming to understand his Grandpa, it's kinda like a sitcom family where the dad (Goku in this case) doesn't quite have the best of relationships with his father (Bardock) yet the young grandson (Goten) bonds more with him than his own dad. I absolutely ADORE Goten and Bardock "bonding". I think it would be immensely sweet if Goten asked more about his saiyan heritage and Bardock decides to give him a traditional saiyan name. As like a nickname or something. I could see Goten becoming a powerhouse later on in this and I'm all for it. I like the idea that Bardock kinda just needed to be out there getting his own food. Living like Goku did all the way back before Dragon Ball began. With no attachment to the planet he didn't have anything to actually live for, so without that animal satisfaction of caring for himself he was frustrated. All he really needed was a purpose, no matter how mundane or petty.
