I was once sitting in Kiel railway station in Germany, waiting for my train. A man and woman came and sat down next to me and told me they were an Iranian couple on a visit. I remember working with a young woman years ago who was dating a young man from Iran who was here for his education. He came from a very wealthy family and was constantly buying her expensive gifts. He even bought her a new car. But in exchange, he completely controlled her. She could never go out with her friends and she certainly could never go out with her coworkers after work, because he expected her to come straight home. Women from that part of the world have no rights, no identity.

The state of Colorado has a strong equal rights component within their state constitution. This came to light as a result of women being arrested for doing the same thing that a man can do. I told him it was actually very horrible and how it threw women in prison for not wearing hijab. He actually denied it! Sanctions never make things better, it only worsen the suffering of the people, not the regime. Best solution is to open more contact sources to connect Iranian people with the rest of the world.
