Ex cummins engineer here, genset engines are different to all other applications, the fuel pump will be controlled by an EFC, so you will need a different fuel pump to start with, injectors will also need replacing because of different fuel requirement for automotive use. The camshaft is also different and will need replacing, constant speed engines have cams ( timing ) that are optimised for 1500 or 1800 rpm operation, you will most likely have different pistons too, get the full spec from the CPL number, turbo may be ok depending on final specs. You can run it with a new pump if you want and leave everything as is, but expect problems and bad fuel economy. Cummins will probably have a kit of parts to swop if you want to convert one application to another.
@stuarth4312 күн бұрын
worked for Cummins Newcastle in early70s was abt to say the EXACT same thing great engine for trawler type, heavy, very few in trucks in the day, mainly the 855 may pay to test that genset, sell it and import a KTA from UKBefore you crank any suspected locked up engine you need to pull the injectors, or you may bust a rod, good luck
@carlthor917 күн бұрын
@@stuarth43A heavy equipment hauler, named Joe, had a KT in his Kenworth, in the late 70's, ran into him in Nebraska in the late 90's, still had the truck on his farm. Took care of it.

Hey mate my cpl is 292 KTA 600 automotive CPL 184 and 386 both run the same timing so I’m hoping to leave the timing alone and get the pump redone to the correct specs CPL 184 lists the same injectors cam and piston part numbers so I’m hoping that I don’t have too many issues it seems to be specced up very close to what I need Cheers mate
@prowler23587 күн бұрын
@dieseldownunder. Hello, check the camshaft part numbers, the timing my be the same, ie xx° before tdc, but the lobes on the cam itself may be a different profile just to make sure, genset applications are usually different in ways that most don't know about, hopefully you can get this running well and fit for purpose, performance parts are the main differences and its always good to double check. Good luck with it, its gonna be a beast when its done!!!

@@prowler2358 where did you come up with that BULL SHIT 💩💩kta600- truck engines k- 19 run the same pistons , cam , timing , unless it is a late industrial cpl 441 cpl then it is timed at . 128 then it will smoke like a S.O.B. at idle when it is below 65° farenheit .unless it is 650- 700 h.p. single turbo look it up in the c.p.l. book . @aussiebattler778915 күн бұрын
I used to work on the KTA19 (525 hp) hat were installed in landing barges in the NT . You will most probbly have to change the fuel pump and injectors as they are set to run at 1500 RPM and possibly the exhaust manifold and turbo as they are for constant speed engines as well . I am not a cummins mechanic but maintained up to 10 of these engines for 15 years . It really sounds sweet . It will probably leak coolant from round the tops of the liners and if you intend to do a lot of hard work the valves will need replacing because if it was a standby genset it will hve the lowest grade valves , if only used for shows they should be ok . valves for marine or excuvator are the highest .
@dieseldownunder.8 күн бұрын
Thanks mate I’m going to have the fuel pump done, I’ve ran through the cpl book and the injectors are the same as the KTA 600 automotive spec so I should be able to leave them alone. I hadn’t heard of the valves being different so that’s a good point I will try to find some more info on that. Hopefully I can leave the heads on for now and work it a little bit and see how it goes. The Guy in Montana was in Overdrive Mag, Black 007 KW, early 80s model maybe 600 KTA both Trucks were highly modified, twin turbos etc. The article said the Truck would use 1 gallon of fuel to move its length on a road at wide open. So you could weld them together and use sleeves for every hole welded in keeping all water and salt out. But it’s a lot of work. You could drill them making sure you have every hole planned out then use panel bond at the seams and holes when you mate them together that would also keep the water out or seam sealer should do the same it’s just panel bond added extra strength it’s super glue for metal. lol.

I may have missed the part on the frame rails but have you ever thought of single rail thicker steel so you wont have the rust jacking between the rails and still have the same strength as a dual rail frame . Just something to think about
@dieseldownunder.8 күн бұрын
I did consider it mate, I stayed with the double frame mostly due to wanting to keep it original and it’s 100ton rating without having to go through any engineering, and it’s probably done a few million km in the last 40 years it will be lucky to do 300,000km in the next 40 years so I don’t think it will ever rust like this again! Cheers mate

Put a cut off air bag suspension in it while doing the chassis rails
@dieseldownunder.6 күн бұрын
I did think about that mate but I want to keep it original if I can and want to keep it simple as I’m going to work it for a little while and 6 rod is as simple as it gets, when the truck retires it can always have air bag rolled under it👌🏻

Was one pulling road trains Brisbane to Darwin in the 90s. Oldmans mate was pulling trains for Bonnicas in a Scania with 13 speed rr in it and was mates with him. Said it pulled triples off the mark like a 400 single.

@dieseldownunder. my pleasure. Your vids are my sorta thing. I actually thought you were someone else and it just twigged you weren't. I wasn't subbed. Wasn't. 👍🏻 GM's, KT's and old kenworths. I'll drop a brag while I'm here 🤣. As 12 year old i did 2 far north Queensland to Melbourne market runs in the 1988 truckin life rig of the year 😀. I was grinning the whole way. The Eliminator. SAR with a 425 3406b and 15 speed. Oldman drove Densleys next truck for a few years and that's actually my all time favourite, The Dominator. Was a 4864 Western Star with a 425 3406b and a 20 speed spicer on tall rears.

Ahh what an old sweetheart… that’ll be a fun old girl to get back up and running again… good bit about making you’re own rails any extra holes that aren’t needed just leave them out, will say surprised to see that level of rust jacking but for a truck that old I guess it’s to be expected, lucky we don’t cop the same weather as the us…
@dieseldownunder.7 күн бұрын
Sure will be mate! Yep I’m leaving out all the unused holes to keep it nice and tidy. I know lucky there’s no salt and snow here👌🏻

Mate think about dropping the SAR cabin on modern rails from a DAF or Kenworth i didn't see many KT powered SAR Kenworths the dust especially where iorn ore has been mined is the worst the way they open up is because of electrolysis from the dust some spots will be a lot more rusted the cabs are a nightmare if you don't do it right from the start i mean dipping it the dust inside the channels and inside it you will always have problems respect to you you are on to it with the Diesel's have a look at Lano tec for protecting the chassis rails you have in the shed it's made from sheep's lanolin oil from the fleece KTA19 are one of my favourite engine's we have had them in Gensets and a trawler and even a Atkinson
@dieseldownunder.11 күн бұрын
Hey mate thanks for watching, I’ve toyed with the idea of a modern chassis but I decided originality was the best route for this one to keep its value, I also want to keep it simple so that it can be a reliable truck that I can use, I’ll definitely do a project like that in the future with an older cab on newer chassis Cheers

If your going to pull engine out you will need to strip front and remove LH spring hanger and slide motor out of chassis, looking at chassis id sat its done stock carting at some stage as the piss gets into rails and migrates every where
@darrencatenacci273715 күн бұрын
Hi Jake this looks to be a big project! Boy those frame rails look to be pretty bad. Curious how you’re going to do the front sections with that drop there? I’m sure you’ve got a plan for that. That is a sweet looking truck. Gen set engine sounds great but too be restricted to 1500 rpm’s will be a problem for a truck. I imagine you’ll have to change the fuel system to fix that. Be another great build. Stay cool
@dieseldownunder.8 күн бұрын
Hey Darren, the front drop downs are bolted to the main chassis rails so it’s as simple as unbolting the 8 or so bolts per side and bolting them to the new rails luckily. Yep that’s it, injectors can stay the same and fuel pump will need to be redone to the correct specs. Cheers mate
@darrencatenacci27378 күн бұрын
Cool you’ve already got a plan! This is gonna be very cool to watch. Always wondered with the weight you guys haul down there if you had double framed trucks. I imagine almost all the trucks do have double frame rails. We have the same problem with frame separation here in the states too. For us it’s the road cleaning chemicals that are used in the winter to keep snow and ice off the roads.
