MASSIVE DSG Problem On Race Night

When preparing any DSG for racing I take 3 steps. #1 cooling, install a bigger and better transmission cooler, do not bypass the heat exchanger, just install the thing either before or after. #2 Fluid, I like liqui moly fluid, change it every 10k if racing, every 5k if the it is a 100% track focused car. #3 better transmission mounts.

My 2019 golf r dq381 was changed by the dealer on warranty due to a oil pump inside having a whine sound. Insane. Now this week it’s getting a new turbo from a seized wastegate.

Had the very same thing happen to my 2017 Alltrack when making a 1/4 mile pass. Had Unitronic stage 2 Ecu and tcu. I did launch control. 1st to 2nd was fine a little slower than usual, 2nd to 3rd didn’t shift. It just stayed at redline for a solid 3 seconds and then slowly shifted into 3rd. I smelled something burning after (almost like burning clutch). Never did it again after tho. Contacted Unitronic. They said it wasn’t their software. I took it to the shop, and here it turns out the dsg transmission had a leak and it was making my one axle click (which would explain why it would wobble after letting off throttle), and apparantly the leak has been there since before I tuned my car. Had no way of knowing since the Alltrack has a full belly pan. I then sold the car because the transmission was gonna need a full replacement due to it being low on fluid for so long and eating itself alive, and I was out of warranty. I’m really hoping this isn’t the case for you.

My R started having issues in manual mode after recent DSG service. I left my R at the dealership few weeks ago since haldex and DSG service was up. Few days after I picked up my R , my R started having problems in manual mode. Sometimes it doesn't shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, I have to shift like 3 or 4 times for it to actually get into 3rd gear. Also, revs sometimes don't go up for solid 3-4 seconds when I downshift manually. Weird, it didn't do that before. Read on forums that guys at the dealership might have put too much or too little oil into the transmission. Hopefully it's only that. DSG is one hell to repair and expensive af.

I had a similar issue mate, I took the car back n showed them exactly what was happening which was my my 2nd to 3rd gears used to lag before switch and then in launch control the car just reved up in 2nd n not shit. They said they just done some adaptations and then the issue was fixed. But I feel like they had messed up the oil levels in the dsg as u said.

Id start by reflashing the DSG tune( to an other Launch RPM) then do the DSG adaptation. also check the fluid level of the DSG as some 2018+ did ship out with lower then it was supposed to have had( if you had not done any service to it since new).

Ill be super interested to how much fluid was in the gearbox. Number 1 main cause of overheated clutch packs and gearbox failures. This looks like an inhibitor, likely due to heat. And its a bit surprising how many techs arent aware of the drip reference point to full ie the reservoir is full when fluid drips itself from the fill hole. Or it could just be some buggy software, considering the update worked well.

Weirdly enough back in May/June I was experiencing this same issue me and a few others with EQT tunes. It was something with an update. Difference was it would complete shut off lmao. Like it would launch and then going into 2nd the car would completely die. It happened at NED I freaked out a bit lol

I brought mine with an APR TCU tune here last year and on pass two or three, something similar happened. It felt as if the transmission nuked itself and couldn't find any gear. It's been fine since but I've been hesitant to experiment with launch control again. No light, no burnt clutch smells. It was strange and a bit scary.

Dsg's have wet clutches so there wouldnt be a smell. Just something to know

Definitely had a slight burning smell for a few days after the tune was installed. Whether or not it was clutch or something else, it had a smell.

very odd thing, i was gonna say it got to hot and it didnt want to shift, as in hot i mean the gearbox. could be the tune aswell

They usually don’t announce per car/box code. But they announced this update 3 months ago. My car just got it.

@@NewEnglandPete Okay. I was just curious. When I hit them up about it back in August they told me it was just for the 2019+ and not the 18. But I installed it yesterday and it is going fine with no issues
