I've used TOO much hardener before, if it's a thin resin surface (like your trash can) it will cure. However if it's a thick table top like I made, the inside will never fully cure but it will get a thin shell of resin. You might think it's fully cured but it's full of syrup, waiting to pop.

You guys likely still dodged a bullet. Often the problems of an incorrect mixture don't appear until later. Assuming this is a typical resin, you would have ended up with a ton of unreacted amines. These would interact with the environment, and they can cause later problems, e.g. you might notice the resin rapidly yellow or go cloudy in only a few weeks or months. You might see the physical properties change, e.g. brittleness, size changes, damage to the wood, etc. Just because it looked ok the next day does not really tell you anything. I think the worst thing would have been it expanding/contracting and separating from the wood or splitting the wood. Also it looks like the changes ended up in it hardening to fast? You might have had trouble binding the next layer to it the next day, given how fast it hardened.

Had to share...I poured a top for a workbench around 22 years ago, and had also used a tape wall...it wasn't stiff or strong enough to hold the weight of the resin, so it leaked onto the floor, and worse, flowed a bit to reach some shag carpeting on the garage floor. somehow I'm not surprised that even during some of the most stressful moments, evan's heart rate was usually about 10-20 lower than katelyn's
@amandaclemmons3 жыл бұрын
I think that’s just because he’s much larger than her. Typically taller people have lower heart rates than shorter people of similar health. If we knew their resting rates I bet it would show that they’re raised a similar amount from baseline

Me laughing/crying in epoxy because they misinterpreted their research… too much hardener, while not recommended, is usually okay. It will just cure faster and hotter so shorter working times. However, the research they looked up said don’t ADD extra hardener to already poured resin. Meaning if you didn’t mix enough hardener and the resin wasn’t setting, don’t try to mix epoxy after the pour because then you’ll have some parts that cure, and some parts that stay wet and then it’s a total mess.

It feels so fitting that even w/ levelling their new garage & checking the counter is level during the pour, there should still be some way for the project to not be completely level. I love how despite all of their meticulous planning for projects, they still face a lot of hiccups & yet still end up w/ a great end result each time. Not only is it interesting to see how they find smart, creative solutions to a lot of the issues they encounter, but it's usually more entertaining too bcos u can feel like you're learning w/ them.

FYI, I was taught that epoxy resin cure is a chemical reaction, which must be mixed as instructed. If you add too much hardener or resin. Then only the correct ratio will harden the extra hardener/resin will remain in the solution uncured. Experience (not mine, my fellow boatbuilders as ever boatbuilder has stuffed up a pour at least once) if you are high in resin it will remain sticky. Usually this has the higher percentage. If you are high in hardener then the excess will be left uncured in the solution. This time as it is the lower percentage then it may appear to harden, but the uncured hardener will make it. weaker. I don't know if you have noticed that your hardener pump gets clogged with a dark solid clump (pump clear with hot soapy water then clean the soap out) or the container that you decanted the hardener out of has dark dribbled stains down the side. I wonder if the same thing might happen to the uncured hardener in the pour and in time it will make the clear opaque. It is only a theory it may need an oxidiser to go hard and dark brown. Polyester is a totally different animal as it is an exothermic reaction.

Hey guys, I think the warning about not using too much hardener was to reduce the heat from the exothermic reaction. Not to tell you the resin wouldn't turn out. It cured faster and hotter and I'll bet if you put a temperature gun on it you would have seen the reaction was much hotter than normal.
@daiendelion3 жыл бұрын
Yes I though of that too! And cmiiw but the hardened resin could crack and shrink because it cures too fast?
@knightyyz3 жыл бұрын
@@daiendelion that's also a possibility, but if you do the math 3:1 is 25% hardener and 2:1 is 33% hardener so they were not off by a mile and they used a super slow cure time. I'm sure it would have turned out fine if they left it.
