The new cult classic, combining fantasy RPG with deeply-woven, challenging 4X strategy, is jointly developed by Slitherine, the renowned strategy and wargame publisher, and Polish studio MuHa Games. They have taken all the successful ingredients of the legendary 1994 original and updated the game staying faithful to the genre-defining experience and in-depth content.
In the new Master of Magic players take up the role of one of 14 unique and diverse grand wizards who, locked in vicious competition, aim to dominate the magical worlds of Arcanus and Myrror.
Recruit and lead mighty armies of elves, dragons, dwarves, and orcs and support them in tense tactical turn-based battles with a wizard’s arsenal of powerful magic spells. Choose your school of magic, perform rituals, and excel in the dark arts. Victory goes to those wizards who use their expanding power to dominate the lands and ultimately rule the world. In the end, there can only be one Master of Magic.

I had no idea there was a remake of MoM on the horizon, one of my all time favourites. One of the not so obvious things is how health, hit chance and damage works. The 1 HEALTH a spearman unit has means 1 for EACH of the visible creatures. Each SWORD means a 40% chance to do 1 damage, and the enemy has a 30% chance to negate that damage for each SHIELD they have. This happens for EACH of the creatures in the unit. All stats are subject to change by unit specific modifiers [special attacks] and abilities, spells and items (for heroes). Probability fun ensues :) P.S.: The weapon you were offered at the end can only used by unique "Hero"-units, of which you can only have up to 6 at the same time. Creating magic items yourself depends on what spells you know / spellbooks you have and helps in mid / late game.

I believe heroism was the only path for potential victory in that first battle, though it would still be risky (as you experienced in the second). Each level of veterancy gives you unit certain buffs, and heroism promotes it straight to the top level. Total buffs from green to elite: +2 atk, +10 to hit, +1 def, +2 res, +1 hp. The hp is particularly good for your infantry, as it doubles their health. The ranged attack thing was just a UI bug. +2 ranged atk is technically part of the veterancy upgrades, but does not apply to units without a ranged attack to improve. Technically even if it did, the unit would still have no ammo to take advantage of it.

With respect to the magic spirit vs ghouls fight, the magic spirit has only 1 figure, while the ghouls have 4. Each figure rolls its attack, and has its hp. So multiply those stats by number of figures while you are considering the relative strength of units.

It's November 2024, and the original Master of Magic is still my favorite video game of all time. Skyrim is #2.

@@DrIncompetent Thea 1 (The Awakening) is a kinda "survive in a world of folklore creatures" game, and I think it's my favorite. The mechanics are a bit weird, but that adds to the feel of exploring the unknown. Thea 2 (The Shattering) has more solid gameplay mechanics and is probably a better game, but has less of the "exploring the unknown" and more of a "now that you understand the world, have some fun in it" feel.

Ooo! I have played Thea: The Awakening and love it! I didn't recall the name of the devs :) I never played Thea: 2 but the first game is so much fun. I have no idea what I'm doing in it but love it all the same haha. It's very much like this, in that it's a fantasy 4x but the card game in Thea is so great ^_^

Not sure why they made this. Only a masterpeice could replace an original like MoM and this isnt.

They do this a lot with games and sometimes it really works--like the Diablo II remaster or perhaps the Dark Souls. Sometimes, not as much.

Wow I had heard about this, but I didn't know it was out! I played the original to death back in '94. I remember amassing giant armies of wyrms and behemoths to annihilate my foes. Looks like a fairly faithful recreation so far. I might have to pick it up. Once thing I noticed is that if you send your familiar into to combat, there is a checkbox where you can disallow them to use mana/spells. So that might save on mana if it's an easy fight.

Oh, great point! I should do this to save my mana. I still have to get my brain around the idea that mana is like gold and doesn't just replenish at full. ;)

It looks to be a faithful reproduction of the original (which I played a LOT back in the day). For anyone totally new to the franchise, your description of it as a fantasy version of Civ is a reasonable comparison. It also has a lot in common with the more recent Age of Wonders. Like Civ, research is important, though victory through total conquest was always more fun.

Haha, yeah the more I play the less it's like Civ beyond the hex-based 4x and more like HoMM and Civ blended to me. I've never played Age of Wonders--I think I should if it's like this! ;D

The original MoM was the very reason I went into AoW much later. I was surprised by the new remake given I was having the impression it's pretty much a dead title due to publishing rights issues during my time playing in the past.

It's way more complicated compared to MoM. More buttons to press more interface to consider over. Surprisingly, I really like that they just stick to the simplified interfaces much like the original MoM.

There is a lot of changes in this remake from the original. One example is that you can get spells form weak monster lairs. Spells as a reward are rare in the original. You used to have to beat moderately strong mosters to have a chance at one. This dramatically changes the game play. The user interface is a mess compared to the original. High Men paladins used to be the strongest non summon unit. Life magic was the strongest magic type.

Is it better? Haha, I wasn't sure what "Elite" meant? I have to get a feel for the spells through experimentation, I suppose ;)

@@DrIncompetent This is a few days late. But Heroism makes your unit level Elite, which is max xp for a standard troop unit. Its like having them level up 3 times in this case, for that unit it would have given them something like +2 attack, +1 defense, +10 to hit, and 1+ HP per figure. Heroism is one of the best common level buffs in the game.
