I am 80, and I know one thing for sure: You DON"T weld ball bearings!
@masterQ202 күн бұрын
Haha, I totally get it! Ball bearings can be tricky to work with, especially when welding. What’s the most challenging thing you’ve welded in your experience?

Glad you liked it! Sometimes simple ideas lead to great results. What’s the best idea you’ve had for a DIY project?

Things I would've done differently. Use a mig welder 70/30 or 75/25 argon/CO2 mixed gas with flux core wire, allows for a lower amperage and more focused heat. Pressed the 3 mandrel bearings into a tube for sturdiness and to prevent galling. Grind the drive bolts smooth at slightly less width than the mandrel to prevent galling and as a guide for the workpiece. Honestly, welding the bearings is the least concern since it's low speed, low impact and relatively low load compared to what they're rated for. I just would've used non sealed bearings with a drop of gear oil in them. All that said, clever build.

Thanks for the detailed input! Using the right gas mix and improving bearing alignment can make a huge difference. It’s always great to learn from others’ experiences. What’s your next project going to be?

Soy de Barqto Venezuela. Lo que nunca habia visto es soldar rodamientos porque de una vez por su dureza se cristaliza el material y se rompe al menor golpe o esfuerzo posterior. Corrigeme si me equivoco.

Thanks! To mount it on your bike, you’ll need to use a ratchet system and attach it securely with welding or bolts. Have you done any DIY bike projects before?

Sure! Creating a DIY ratchet and bike chain setup can be a fun project. You'll need some basic metalworking tools like a welding machine and bike parts. Have you worked with metal before, or would you need some guidance to get started?
