I think I beat you to the punch when I commented this exact thing on your last video, that the oracle is one of the actors in Neo's controlled life. I think Morpheus and Trinity could also be programs, but if we go there Zion and reality are also illusions filled with actor-programs. Then, it's possible that every person in the Matrix is a program, all fulfilling their programming, even if unwittingly. If we go back to the conversation with the Architect, he says "Your life is the sum of a remainder of an unbalanced equation" Your life... That might include everyone Neo interacts with. I loved the false choices narrative you brought up! But calling the Oracle the devil, tramples on a lot of Nuances. In the final scene with the Architect and her, He says that it's a dangerous game she has been playing, and she says change always is. He asks just how long she thinks this peace is going to last. Neo also asked for peace, but I don't remember them ever discussing that option. No, I believe that the Oracles goal was to help Neo, because he needed help, and so did she. She might have used him to help further her goals which might include more power for her. But when she asks the Architect if she has his word to let them go free, she doesn't sound like she's in a power position, just a negotiated one. I can't see how negotiating for peace can be evil.

Disagree. Two choices that have the same outcome regardless of your choice is an illusion. Take two party politics, vote for me or vote for my cousin. Is that really a choice? Yes, we are manipulated into believing we only have two choices which effectively makes other choices useless voids but the two choices we are given are long established false opposition entities of each other who both work towards the same goal. The great Greek thinkers reflected that divide and rule was most effective way for very small amounts of people to enslave very large amounts of people. The illusion of choice and the illusion of freedom while we argue internally over divisions they create in order that they act as all essential saviours.

I wonder. If I thought I had a meaningful choice and acted accordingly, does the fact that I was being deceived negate the fact that I was exercising a moral choice? In the original Matrix movie, Morpheus took on an agent knowing full well he would be captured so that Neo could escape. Neo might have escaped anyway, if the machines were in utter control of outcomes. Morpheus did not know this, so was his choice then not a choice or just not the one he thought it was? Is the process always less important than the actual outcome, especially if that outcome is only interim? Suppose Neo was wrong about what his final sacrifice in Matrix Revolutions would achieve, would that negate the fact that he chose to sacrifice himself for others? Not if his character arc was the point. I`m reminded a little of the Kobayashi Maru simulation in Star Trek Academy. Perhaps Matrix 4 will settle this.

Anyone who wants to talk about choice in a Video Game Needs to play The Stanley Parable, and Minecraft. Choice in a game is far more complicated that choice in a pre-programmed narrative. There are glitches, different ways of doing things, turning off the game at any moment, and countless different things you can make in some games. Once you think about it, it is obvious that in a story that is written out, even if non-linear, then all paths of that story would have to be planned out for us. It doesn't mean that all of life, or even games, work that way. (The Advancement system in Minecraft seeks to take some of that choice away, but you can ignore that system. It is interesting that this system is put in because people like it; deep down people often don't really want to make their own choices.)

I think this video is missing a key piece. Yes the Oracle helped build the Matrix, and yes she was influencing events, but from what I can see she did not have complete control, rather she was trying to guide events to what she saw as the best outcome for all involved, a lasting peace between man and machine. Toward this end certain events needed to happen, (the machines needed to have their control of the matrix threatened, Neo needed to exist and guide the humans, Neo needed to be fully 'human', ect) and the previous iterations obviously failed to achieve it. She was playing a dangerious game from inside the system to try to change it, risking ending it all in order to try to achieve peace. If her perseption was perfect and there was no choice then they would have nailed it perfectly the first time through. No need for do overs.

It's hard to say if we are in total control of our choices. We are conscious of very little happening within our body. Examples are best. Every morning when I turn on the shower I have to pee. The sound of rushing water makes me pee. I had nothing to do with this decision. The decision was made completely unconsciously. We have the power of choice if we stop and think and apply reason and common sense before making a decision but there will always be that underlying layer we are unaware of. No one really understands it.
@josephD324 жыл бұрын
I don't think the Oracle was evil, but definitely calculating. She had calculated the outcome of either "choice", thus effectively knowing what would happen either way and, using the power of suggestion, made sure the end result was to her liking. Yes, still a measure of control, as knowing the outcomes of a person's choices either way effectively renders their choices meaningless.
@Eternaprimavera734 жыл бұрын
not really. In the 1st versions of Matrix, there was no mother (why some people connect then mother with matrix is a mistery) so there was no Oracle. There was a perfect world, which human beings couldn't accept, because perfection is nothing, propbably, when there is no other choice that the pre-arranged path of the perfection. Many humans died (or, many of them were ONES?), because they didn't accept a perfect world where they couldn't have a choice. So the Oracle, less connected with the parameter of perfection, so more intuitive and more able to understand the human nature, was created later, and this is said by the Architect The humans in order to accept a reality, they need to have the possibility of the choice nside the matrix (which was already called this way). So with the choice, everone was able to play his own role which is fictitious only from the point of view of the machines, and not of the people living in the matrix. When people become able to choose, they could also have doubts on the reality of the world they live in, and this is why some of them could rebel, and start a path where they had a better understanding, in order to change the reality, since after all that reality is an illusion (spoon boy, Neo, the 2 sisters..., the runner in Animatrix), and so there can be many potential Ones, but maybe just a few of them have the carachteristics to be the one ONE. And this one ONE is, in a mathematica strings world, the one who more than other compensates the unbalance of the equations, and this happens exactly because he doesn't understand only the nature of the matrix, but he also is in control of his own destiny, something not necessarily shared from the spoon boy. After all, one thing is to know where the door is, another is to go through the door... Only after the birth of the 1st One, the Architect could have another variation to be calculated into the matrix, and of course he takes counter-measures, but the fact that now he calculates also the existence of the One, doesn't mean that the One is not free. After all, he can be a potential like the spoon boy, but he can decide that this is no worthy, and he can give up, giving up also to the role. Since the Architect has the counter measure (remember that the countermeasure is to destroy Zion, forcing the One to sacrifice himself in order to save the people in Zion, otherwise the One could even kill the Architect - unless the Architect is immortal, but I don't think so - if this didn't mean (not sure) to kill the IA which runs everything, at least in the matrix, (the sentinels could be not related with the Architect but just to be in communication with him), with the consequence of the collapse of the program and the falling into nothing - dying - of all the people living into the matrix. In this picture, the only job of the Oracle, is to push the one with more potential (in terms of unbalancing of equations in consequence of his belief to be FREE, which is the cause of the unbalance!!!!) to be aware that any choice is his choice. It is his choice even when in Revolutions he fights Smith despite the impossibility to win, because he is aware at the maximum level. So he continues to fight because this is HIS CHOICE. If Neo had got only the level of awareness of the 1st 5 Ones (by the way, Merovingian is not one of them) , he wouldn't have got to the point where others didn't get. Awareness that includes the Love for Trinity. And if he reacted in different way when Morpheus was caught, or if he didn't have a so strong motivation, he would have continued his life as hacker, not sleeping, searching forever for an answer (to search was his choice, without Oracle pushing him), being maybe in control of his life in the fictious world (not fictious life for him), but never becoming the One. He starts believing only at a certain point, as Morpheus says, and this happens when he can decide to fight Smith in the underground or not. He could escape, but then, he feels something, maybe he doesn't know what yet. But he becomes the One only later, after the decision to not be dead (to die in the matrix means to die in the real world). Trinity put another coin in the videogame by kissing Neo, and Neo recovers his digital identity from the source. So Neo wants to control his own life, he is the mathematic anomaly because of the previous point, he loves Trinity, the Oracle finds him via Morpheus, she just guides him to understand that he has his free will, he has to know himself (which eventually means also to understand the reason of his own choices), he thinks he can decide and change things by saving the one who is caught from the Agents and who is wanted because he is a hacker freeing people from the Matrix and searching for the One. Then Neo understand the matrix and does his choice to not die after the gun. Now he is the One because of his free will and by being the mathematical anomaly (first or later an anomaly would raise there, in a world where the free choice is one of the factors, by collecting in one person all this fee will). Then he wants to understand what to do with his role, what the role means, and which are the consequences since nobody can see beyond the choices which are not clear, EVEN THE ORACLE. The Oracle guides, know the people because she is intuitive program, but she cannot pre-arrange the events, she can just help them to occur if there are some conditions. The Architect can just calculate, and re-calculate when new factors arise, by assigning values of probability. But the probability doesn't require the understanding of the nature of the people, their characters, their free will. Which is the reason why the Oracle was created. But this understanding of humans make the Oracle more human, so she wants the peace, this is why she tries to set a a new balance. And after all, if her target is to provide the men the idea of the choice, why shouldn't she help the man who by being the anomaly,he incarnates the free choice..

The "path of the One" is what the 5 Anomalies before Neo competed. After meeting the Architect, they all chose to reboot the Matrix, and "save" humanity. The Path of Neo , saved both machines ,and the Real world inhabitants, from Smith, poised to annihilate everything, rebooting the Matrix to version 7, and it no longer needs a "One" to reboot, and the machines will cease attacking Zion. Hence the Path of Neo. This is the 3rd,non-binairy choice, the Oracle was banking on, the result she said the Architect couldn't see with his ridged calculus. It is easier for his mortal coil to believe in something bigger than himself, constantly full of doubt, accepting the wisdom of a portrayed harmless figure, than to realize the power struggle within the struggle. I mostly agree. Although, The Oracle is basically manipulating the entire story and outcome, but not just through offering the illusion of choice, but through also narrowing the odds that the choice she needs to be made will be made. You touched upon it with her line that “would you have still broken the vase if I hadn’t told you?” That’s a big clue right there too, because the answer is possibly not. Effectively, The Oracle is an actuarial program. She calculates probabilities and outcomes, and with that she will know that in order to increase the probability of a certain outcome, she just needs to make tiny manipulations to what is happening. She does this by planting the little seeds in the character’s minds that will make the possibility they act or react in a certain way that much more probable. So, for example, she would already know that if she says nothing, maybe there’s a 50/50 chance that Neo knocks over the case, but if she says something, most likely it would cause him to react by turning, probability of breaking the case goes up to 95% and so on. So, not necessarily offering the illusion of choice, but planting the seed in his mind that there are two choices instead of infinite choices and knowing what little touch is needed to make one choice more probable picked than the other. Essentially it’s like using the butterfly effect and knowing that, if she just make this little butterfly fly right instead of left, she’ll get the hurricane she wants.

Zion is indeed another matrix, the blue matrix, it is the pressure relief "valve" for the green matrix. As long as humans believe Zion is reality it will fulfill it's function of providing "hope" and hope, especially the hope of escape is a very powerful control tool. There's less need for revolution if at some level there is hope of escape. Where Zion to be destroyed the pressure for revolution in the green matrix would be built up (there is nowhere to escape to, you either destroy the green matrix or your accept it). The machines need humans to believe Zion is the base reality which is why they put on the whole dog and pony show of "trying" to destroy it.

@Brody Samsonite But that's the point, the whole thing about zion and all it's trapping is basically busy work designed to guide the one to his or her destiny of resetting the simulation while also providing a place where those that reject the green matrix go. Remember that the oracle's function is to provide humans with the ILLUSION of choice (free will). The humans that reject the simulation are given a "choice" to stay in the green matrix or "leave". If they choose to "leave" they are shunted over to the blue matrix (Zion) which they accept as reality because they were given a choice (even if the choice is basically meaningless). Also ask yourself, if Zion was real and it actually had the potential to destroy the machines, why would they allow people to escape to it? Why not just kill them outright and be done with them considering they are a threat? Zion is just a convenient way to still use those humans for power and at the same time provide the escape valve/choice/free will solution the Oracle came up with. Originally the Wachowski sisters intended for humans to be used as neural processors rather than batteries (the studio made them change it because they thought people would have a hard time understanding the concept of biological computing). If you keep that in mind, then it becomes clearer why the machines would come up with ways to present the illusion of choice so they wont lose precious human "cpus". Agent smith spoke of all the crops lost before the "free will" solution of the oracle was implemented. Hence Zion is just another simulation, a much smaller one than the matrix, but very much a sim. PS These are just my opinions, and they're might incorrect but I really enjoy talking about them. :)

A couple of good thinking points. It's easy to see the Oracle as compassionate and on his/our side. She probably is compassionate-more compassionate than the architect. With all this considered, the conversation with the architect, at the end, with the little girl lingers. Does she represent hope or possibility, if the difference is even important

The Oracle's true power: cookies. And candy. And seating. And outcomes. "Here, have a cookie. I promise you, when you finish that cookie, you'll feel better" ~ The Oracle, The Matrix. If a cookie can make someone feel better; then why does Neo always seem concerned, after eating it? Also, If The Oracle really is a manipulator; and might be painted in such an antagonistic way; The Oracle: Please, have a seat. Neo: I think I'll stand. A moment later; Neo takes a seat. Neo: I felt like sitting. Oracle: I knew you would. Do you want some candy? Neo: [Despite best efforts to refuse, still takes a piece of candy.] Later on: Oracle: I still have candy. (Knowing full well Neo would accept a piece.) -- Agent Smith: [Explaining how everything is done purposely, deliberately.] You bake... cookies, purposely, deliberately; as if to expect company... Oracle: Why are you here? Agent Smith: Cookies, like everything; need love. Oracle: You are a bastard. Agent Smith: You would know; mom. Oracle: Just do, what you came you came here to do. Agent Smith: Yes ma'am. -- Also: Merovingian: [Gives the crew of Nebuchadnezzar a choice, they would undoubtedly refuse.] Bring me the eyes of the Oracle. -- Oracle: All those "rogue programs," like urban legends; are just people doing something with the program they shouldn't be doing." Also, Oracle: You make the choices. (Or) All I ask; is that you make up, your own damn mind. -- Anyone you ask; "What did the Oracle tell you?" Response: She told me, exactly what I needed to hear. And what exactly, was that? -- Morpheus: Neo is doing, what he believes he must do. Also Morpheus: I dreamt this... -- It all makes me wonder; Who *really is in control?*

The Architect knew all of this as well. That's why he seems to antagonize Neo in the screen room, making it sound like Neo only had 1 choice. He was actually pushing Neo to choose the door that the previous 5 anomalies did not choose. This is alluded to at the end of Revolutions when the Oracle and the Architect meet. He says to her that she has played a very dangerous game and that he is also skeptical that the new peace can last. He even says to Neo that he can see the emotional pre-cursors forming leading to an emotional response designed to cloud his reason and judgement. The key to making him choose the other door was Trinity.

At 5:58 in the reflection of Morpheus's glasses it shows Neo reaching for the red pill on our left side of the screen, yet on the other side there isn't even an arm raised reaching for anything. I believe this is further symbolism of what Morpheus was purposing in that scene.

There is also another reference to eating something in Matrix - the scene from Reloaded, in the Merovingian building, when he is showing how he seduces a girl by giving her a "special cooked" cake. Eating it she was assimilating a code, which changed her physiological processes and behaviour. So really, what was in the Oracle's cookies and candies?

When you do a magic trick, you can present someone with false choice. You ca also present them with actual choice, as long as you are ambigous about the outcome. I do belive his choices where real, but very probable to end in the same way, especially with them so often following orders. The oracle also says "the only way er are going to get there is together", and at that point its clear that she is referring to both machines and humans. That could well be the case from the beginning.

The Oracle exercises control through manipulation, which means her power is not absolute, just highly predictive. That is why the Architect describes her as an Intuitive Program: she can see what needs to be said or done in order to achieve a desired outcome (but can she cope with true irrationality?). Also, some of her predictions refer to future events in the "real" world, on the Nebuchadnezzar, which she could not possibly have foreseen if it was really outside of the Matrix. This is the big secret of the first film, which is only spelt out by the Architect in Reloaded, when he refers to the necessity of Zion and then right at the end we see Neo gain the ability to defeat the Sentinels with his mind. There is also a big change in direction between the first film, which basically shows a Matrix populated by people and agents, and Reloaded, where people have vanished and the whole film concentrates on a Matrix filled with programs. Put all that together and it should have made for a terrific 3rd film where Neo, Morpheus etc realise that The Matrix is multi-layered and they are still in it. So are they humans, or programs? How many layers are there? Can they ever actually escape? If you die in one layer, do you die in all of them or perhaps get put into a storage buffer? So many opportunities to tie it all to the classical questions of our existence and philosophy, yet the Wachowskis ignored it all to just create a silly shoot 'em up finale. So disappointing. Let's hope M4 fixes things.

I've always wondered about their role. What do you think they do/mean/represent?
@Madness12994 жыл бұрын
@@andreab380 Just my interpretation but, they may have been created by Oracle/machines, or born themselves, in an attempt to assimilate with humans better, for many reasons. Reasons include - to achieve true peace/partnership with humans in future, to learn exiled/rebelling human behaviour and why it happens (to understand and manage the Zion resistance better, why people choose to pull away from the matrix or authority and why they act how they do when exiled or in struggle), to learn more about anomalies, to learn the value and link between family+love+creation, to challenge the morality and ethics of machine actions and understand whether certain machine actions are good or bad, to understand sacrifice and how it may impact resurrection or reincarnation, and to experiment with freewill, choice and why someone/something would do something outside of a set purpose. They break from logical/functional purpose to emotional and spiritual being. And Neo has a strong emotional imprint on him (or on his code if he's partly or fully a machine/program), particularly the emotion of love, of which Neo has a very strong connection. (Sorry if written badly)

I don't think the oracle is in control of Neo because she thinks humans should be gotten rid of, or continuously enslaved as they are, in the Matrix. At least, she doesn't pitch it that way in the movies. She makes it seem like she wants humans and machines to have a future, together. Of course, this is open ended and sounds optimistic and hopeful, thats why I think I believe that. However, this theory is interesting since it is left open ended to a degree. At the end of revolutions, on the virtual park bench, when the architect and the oracle are talking, she asks him what about the others - he says "what others?" she says, "the ones that want out?" he says, "obviously they will be freed." This exchange suggests her motivations are to have more of a cooperation with humans - so, the previous video where the matrix's purpose is to 'take care' of humans, rather than exploit and oppress them, may tie in somewhat; since, this may be the Oracles true aim. Even though she did manipulate the humans, it was to help them be more 'with' the times as it were. Get them up to speed.

Trying predicting the outcome of a situation is whats drives us make a choice in first place, suggestions (or opinions) is what makes us decide take a path B instead of A, because of logic... we make alot of mistakes when we choose and "person next to us" can tell us that, mainly because see things from other prism / perspective of situation... Humans are divided because to logic, everyone have they own logic of reality, but doesnt mean someone else cant help us conclude the logic of things... Oracle is "that friend" that tell you have "this path and that path but you have to think about consequences of your actions" "For any decisions, there is consequences"

The Architect and the Oracle seem to be right out of Greek mythology. Uranus and Gia, the mother and father of creation. He sought to build and control while Gia saw his shortcomings and sought to subvert him and bring forth a greater creation. The humans who are awake, call them titans, strong powerful yet still controllable on a base level. Neo would be the final evolution, call him the Zeus figure of the story. He will band together those who seek a higher existence and over throw the old gods to make way for the re-emergence of humanity. An emergence that will awaken all of humanity and shut down all higher thought machines and completely cripple the Matrix for the next 10,000 years. And once the truth of the Matrix fades the memory will become legend, then myth and finally the Matrix will be reborn from the hubris of man.
