Speaking of bloodtinge. It would be so cool for Duke to encounter some Lovecraftian monstrosity, driving any normal human insane with cosmic horror, and be totally unaffected by it due to his character-defining lack of insight.
@HarriJokinen5 жыл бұрын
That would be so great to see. Along with the "old Duke" who has lost his fame and fortune.

In an alien invasion situation of mass death, juxtaposing "other characters reacting with shock and horror" to "Duke being totally unaffected by it", like he doesn't quite seem to get the implications, would actually be pretty funny.

The reason for the lack of combat in the beginning is actually because of well half life. There’s some great interviews back in the day where 3D realms would actively try to stop George Broussard from playing new games because he would keep wanting to put new stuff into dnf.
@LonelySpaceDetective5 жыл бұрын
George Broussard was also the mastermind behind DNF switching engines multiple times as well, if I recall correctly. I feel like he was probably the overall worst influence on the game's development.
@misterbadguy73255 жыл бұрын
Which is kinda sad. Half-Life's opening had a point because the whole focus of Half-Life is a facility being destroyed. The opening is there to give you a sense of what working there is like before smacking it with a wrecking ball for 80% of the game. (Also, to show off the graphics tech of the era.) You get the time to walk around Black Mesa and meet the people there and see what they're up to; even through the filter of sci-fi, it feels like a place that could actually exist, so it actually has an impact when aliens invade. Meanwhile, DNF's opening is just a bunch of people announcing how much they want to suck Duke's dick in a silly place you leave after the first ninety minutes. You don't actually spend that long there, so it's not really laying the ground for much, unlike how Black Mesa was the location of 90% of Half-Life.
@Haruharuharuko19425 жыл бұрын
Space Detective completely correct. I do love the idea of fellow 3D realms employees trying to hide new games from George like some kind reverse Easter egg hunt so they could make progress in dnf

My favorite little unintentional joke about Duke 3D was how Duke seemed like a robot with a catchphrase-spouting voicebox sewn to him because of how stiff his animations were in cutscenes or how he couldn't move his mouth to talk, and Forever just reinforces that notion to me

This is so wonderful, you're breaking the game down in a way that's much more entertaining and informative than a let's play. I still wanna see you do let's plays (because you're great at them), but this was the right call for this game. The writing, the editing, and the intro were all on point, everyone killed it!

I had a DNF preorder that I had forgotten about show up on the doorstep. I lost the bust which legit makes me upset, but the postcards and comic are my treasured babies. As far as the game goes, I spent about a half hour making a beautiful diorama for the kid who asks for a signature, got tired before the first boss, stopped for the night and literally never touched it since.

My roommate at the time had the 360 version and I had the PC version. My loading times were half as long as his were. They also pretty quickly updated the PC version to let you carry more weapons. (4, iirc?) It's not the whole arsenal but it's at least BETTER. Also, imagine paying $80 or whatever nonsense I paid for Balls of Steel edition when it came out. The Duke bust is probably the best thing about this game and you can get them for $5 off of eBay now.

The Halo jab has always fascinated me. I grew up and really started caring about new releases during the deathspiral vaporware cycle of Duke Nukem, so I genuinely never heard about Duke until he died, with the seemingly-final cancellation of Forever before Gearbox bought it up, and the internet got all sentimental for a bit like it is want to do. Meanwhile, Halo completed a full on victory lap in that time, completing its first trilogy, some spin offs, started another trilogy entirely, and been dethroned utterly by the senseless juggernaut of Call of Duty. I grew up around Halo, but Duke was a complete unknown to me. And then comes out this game, this mediocre, barely-above-shovelware title with a garbage sense of humor, stumbling around like a drunken ex-fratboy who thinks himself still hot shit. The ex-frat tries to throw punches at the man in green, the guy he vaguely remembers being the new big guy back when he first slipped into an effective alcholic coma, but the man in green has since himself faded to the sidelines, doesn't even recognize the ex-frat, more focused on his own life, his 9-5 and failed fight against a new titan. And as he throws those punches, all involved can clearly see them to be of the same form pioneered by the man in green, in a world that has moved on from them.
@RoastedPheasant5 жыл бұрын
I don't really wanna see "grizzled, sad old duke". I think having a past-his prime and forgotten Duke is a good baseline that could even make for some really funny bits. Maybe after saving the world all those times they DID erect a Duke statue... and since there hasnt been any big world ending threats in awhile that statue has gone pretty unmaintained. You could still have him have a big ego and some diehard fanboys stroking it, but have most of the public just kind look his way and go "You saved the world? Sure thing buddy, what else is new?" Hell, you could even still have the Olsen twins analogue, where the only people he really fits in with are other washed up has-beens. And then Duke could spend the game re-establishing his brand when a new alien threat descends.

I came looking for this video because I'm surprised to find the game is actually not that bad. I did not expect that. It's not the greatest game ever, it's honestly just a fairly okay game, more good than it has any right to be. When it came out, it was hard to not look at it and see how outdated it was. Nowadays, since almost everything from that era is now outdated, it feels even less out of place in the modern era. That doesn't mean it's not outdated anymore, but it feels more retro than anything else I really wish they'd have given you an Easter egg achievement for drowning yourself in the hot tub at the start of the game

It later turns out Aliens faked the scandels to weaken Duke and cause Earth to not have a faithful savior. Duke then is forgoten and Earth is being invaded and EDF have been weakened. Then Duke gets out of his gloomy state, changes his Hair to a Mullet-ponytail combo to get that aged look off him and helps a group of Resistance conscripts to kill the Alien overlord. I had ideas for unlockable outfits like Classic Duke or ones based on other games for nostalgia. It's a shame my idea won't ever come to fluetion but I had the idea for a while.
