Im actually 99% sure it wasn't. I can't remember the interview but Randy mentioned that he had a question mark over that scene. I believe he mentioned having other people look at it. Also, the game had no dialogue for Duke(at least that was recorded by Jon St John) at time 3DR went bankrupt.

Could have been true, but no. Randy himself said back in the day that that scene was worse before Gearbox came in and had some dialogue edited out. Dedicated fans think the unused Duke line "What a waste." was supposed to play after the twin's death instead of "You little b*stards, that Queen Mother of yours is gonna pay." On who's fault it really was, I'd blame it on DNF's crazy development and in Gearbox's overconfidence. Surely the twin's fate was supposed to play in the way a much more poignant moment found in 3DRealms's 2006 Prey did. But by virtue of having the placeholder dialogue being haphazardly written by the Tryptich skeleton crew (instead of a professional writer), and then Gearbox not wanting to spend money to re-write it and make it better, this is the version that we got.

@@ElOctopodo Yeah, I'm not really outraged or offended by anything in DNF, the game isn't worth that. But having Duke say "Looks like you're fucked" at that part with the twins, really makes him look like a giant cold and callous asshole who doesn't actually care about women in the slightest, just what they can do for him sexually. Duke just comes off more of a loser and asshole in general in DNF, constantly having to tell himself how awesome he is to feel better about himself.

In fairness to gearbox, I don't think this game was salvageable. You have more than a decade of work with questionable design decisions and a lot of that work already thrown out several times. Gearbox didn't sign-up to rebuild the game (which is a fool's errand) and they likely had to do a fair bit of work just getting a workable final product.

"Nukum Video" is a reference to the very first game (before DN3D), which was changed to "Duke Nukum" after they realized there was a character in the old Captain Planet cartoon with the name "Duke Nukem" and they were afraid of getting sued.

The thing that enraptured me with that legendary E3 2001 trailer was just how epic and batshit crazy it looked. But the tone was actually quite serious; you got the sense it was going to have a satisfying story and interesting horror elements. I know that game never really existed, but that is the tone they should have stuck with. A bit like an Arnie film combined with Aliens. Instead they just leaned in on all the most throwaway and tasteless elements of Duke 3D, assuming those were what everyone was gagging for.

Behind that glory hole in Duke's mind is actually a dude. Barely rendered at all but definitely a dude. Probably one of the most clever things in this whole game, because I have always felt that most overtly masculine dudes are closeted.

Mass Effect 3 had an enemy type, Banshees, floating around with their tits out, and actually pulled that off well, because Banshees are a horrifying corrupted version of the Asari we've spent the past two games oggling and because ME3 was a game as much about the corruption and destruction wrought by the horrible space war going on. It also helps that the game is mostly pretty tonally consistent, with its exceptions (the Citadel DLC) being handled extremely well and coming off more as a bit of respite in the surrounding doom and gloom than a jarring tonal shift as Duke throws jokes around while his girls die horribly in front of him. Just another game out around this time doing everything Duke fell flat on his face trying to do.

I can see that they felt the need to replicate the weird alien babe shit from Duke 3D, but back then the Build engine gave it a little bit of distance and the ‘babes’ were just silent wooden sprites that didn’t feel remotely real. In a modern 3D engine with voice acting the same thing suddenly feels extra nasty, yeeeeesh

In defence of duke nukem forever, what we eventually got was just a string of (near) complete content rushed together by people who formally worked for 3dr I've spoken to people who worked on the project, the general vibe was only frustrations with the mismanagement of the project. In terms of the mentioned vibe of the hive, yeah agreed. I think if you look through the original trailers for earlier versions you get the idea duke was going to be a whole different type of game. Horror almost. Especially the teaser trailer I think in this version the intention for the ending was duke would die. Bombshell was still in the game when 3DR went bankrupt. She was to take over in duke 5, titled duke nuke vengeance. Ultimately, DNF failed because of too many changes etc. Better efforts exist by individual modders in the serious Sam engine.

About the Nukum thing it might me a reference to his old name Duke Nukum. There was some villain called Duke Nukem in Captain Planet and they thought they would get sued if they went with the name.
