Someone said that the funniest thing about Matt Rife isn’t his comedy, but the sheer irony of being angry that he’s successful bc women find him hot and “objectify” him…when he bases his entire comedy skit on objectifying women in general and the women in his audience.

I saw his Only Fans special when it got released on YT and I remember being disappointed because all of the funny bits were in the clips he posted on Instagram. What gave me the ick was the story he told that closed out the special where he was basically trying to get this girl to sleep with him but she fell asleep in his bed so he (apparently) ended up jerking off while he was in the bed next to her and he..."accidentally" soiled her as she woke up. Whether that story is true or not, is debatable because comedians make up all kinds of crazy shit for specials all the time. But hearing that story as a woman just completely threw me off and disgusted me. I think you're right. He's definitely trying to appeal to a male demographic now, but the way he's doing it is just god awful. You can't put women down to cater to men but still capitalize off of their thirst for more money. He can't have it both ways. Also -- if he thinks misogynistic jokes are the key to nailing a male audience, that says a lot about what he thinks about men and what jokes men think are funny.

Just out of curiosity, you said you can joke about everything if you are funny, however what gives someone the authority to decide if something is funny? I actually don’t understand the mentality of cancelling people especially comedians for “offensive jokes”, isn’t that a bit too much? Don’t you feel like you give someone else too much power by getting offended? I know that this topic is very nuanced, and I couldn’t possibly sum up all of my points in the comments. Also I want to mention again that I don’t want to be rude, just genuinely curious.
@genericname872711 ай бұрын
@@aleksovch how does someone give him power by being offended? You suggesting he gains strength from upsetting people? I think if you as a comedian alienate your audience it impacts your career as a comedian, so if anything he’s “losing power” I suppose if you want to use that terminology lol. It’s just the obvious consequence of telling edgelord jokes. Many will find it unpleasant. If people leave offended and like they’ve paid to have an upsetting night out, and you as a comedian don’t care, you’re probably just a rubbish comedian. “Cancelling” is literally just what happens when your fanbase decides they no longer want to support you. If a comedian is making content the audience finds upsetting rather than funny, why should the audience support them? If you want to spend your night listening to a man joke about women being brutally attacked because that’s the kind of thing that gives you a chuckle, go ahead. Maybe you’re part of the new audience Matt Rife is trying to attract then. He’s actively wanting to be cancelled so he can attract a new audience too. You can joke about anything. Racists will enjoy racist humour, ableists will enjoy ableist humour, sexists will enjoy sexist humour, homophobes will enjoy homophobic humour, etc. Fewer venues might want to invite you to perform if you deliberately go for the more controversial jokes, but there’s an audience for the jokes nonetheless. When it comes to misogynistic jokes though you have to keep in mind that many men only go to these shows with their partners. If a misogynistic man’s girlfriend/wife is getting upset then it might be hard for him to laugh along and enjoy himself even if he agrees with the misogynistic humour and would normally find it funny. Even if it’s the kind of joke they’d make with their buddies, they may feel self-conscious laughing about it in front of a woman they’re with. So making misogynistic jokes often doesn’t even lead to the misogynists in the audience enjoying themselves tbh.
@sandy_carpetsthesecond501311 ай бұрын
@@aleksovch Not really. Offense can give someone power in settings where that's the intent. But in this case, he's going to be losing his income and reputation. Very few people are going to find this funny, and most of the people who will find his jokes about DV and stories about SA funny are going to be creepy and violent. Personally, I think he's losing power by offending people. And I think his stupidity, especially if he keeps it up, is going to put him in a scenario where his humour is too niche and his audience is too volatile for him to sustain himself in this career path.

He tries very hard to act like he is in on the game about his public perception, but the times when he tries to act selfaware it comes across as very insecure of the things he is "aware", trying to bring them up before someone else has the chance to point them out in a way that doesn't fit his narrative. He behaves like the caricature of what a "chad" popular guy does in his mind, it seems like he hates being known as a guy with a female fanbase because he wants women to want him without him doing anything to warrant it besides how he looks. His jokes are lame to the point where they aren't even offensive because you can tell he is acting like a person trying to emulate what men who are actually offensive say as an outsider who grew up never been part of that "in crowd", so the edgy 14 year old cousin reading too much reddit is a pretty good comparison. He's been doing comedy for more than a decade so it's kinda understandable that he wants to be appreciated by big comedians in any way possible. And I think that's exactly the problem. He's not doing the comedy for comedy, to tell some stories, to simply entertain, he's doing it to prove the point. So he's edginess feels forced. I do believe that he has to stop being so stubborn and accept that crowd work is his strongest asset. It's hard to do decent crowd work, you have to be quick and smart, it wouldn't make him any less of a comedian. IMO he has potential to maybe create a brand new show, to create something different on netflix or on youtube, or elsewhere in this direction. He also was pretty good on Jimmy Fallon, and I don't think that he'll be able ro pull out the whole late night show on his own but probably hosting something can work too. However, in order to achieve anything and not to lose momentum, he has to majorly deflate his ego, stop trying to be liked by dudes so much and really expand his comedy horizon or search for something else completely.

here's my theory: i think matt rife wants a male audience. he, like many guys, doesn't wanna be considered a pretty boy. and he has decided that being a violent misogynist is the way to go about it. and it's not a bad technique, the guys in the comments of the horrible things he's said are always going "well i like him now!" but realistically he won't thrive with a male audience. when ur a comedian u need to have an it thing. andrew schultz has also said some pretty bad shit, but he's known for AMAZING crowd work. john mulaney isnt really all that funny to me, but his schtick is that he looks like some regular white guy but he's struggled with addiction. matt rifes shtick is that hes good looking. that is something that simply wouldn't matter to men. there's no shortage of misogynistic men in comedy, he would literally fade within a year if his audience was men. he's literally fucking himself over for no reason LOL

As part of the 3%'ers (gay male) I totally agree, i feel like her commentary is very relatable. Angelika has really good takes, and she still presents the topic in a mostly objective manner, with just the right amount of sarcasm & humor lol! I really enjoy hearing her perspective on some of these drama situations:)

I want to see you cover Too Turnt Tony and the missing boy. He found a child that had been missing for a couple weeks and was recently hit with a restraining order from the parents, which he then violates to force his weath upon them and force the dad to allow interactions with him and the child. I feel like theres some information hes not sharing and the whole things weird. Why was the boy missing so long, why do you have such a "connection" with the child that you'll risk jail time, aside from wealth why isnt he treated with the same consequences for violating the restraining order, why did the parents even get a restraining order in the first place.
