When I was in tech school we learned that if you need to mark pistons, you do it on the inside of the skirt somewhere because marks on the surface of the piston will lead to hot spots that cause pre-det. Someone else commented something similar below. BUT, I haven't owned a porsche shop for the last 40 years, I'm not trying to pretend I know more than this dude. Just weird to see someone mark a piston like that, I'd be curious to hear an explanation

18k is an inflated price and no you are not supposed to strike the piston with anything because that area will now be a hot spot and may cause detonation. Anything with an edge in your combustion chamber will attract a hot spot. The fact he done that makes me question his entire operation.

No it wont be a "hot spot", I've rebuilt corvette engines and you do need to number the piston heads aswell as the the piston rods. It's common practice.

@@eeterp32 its a machine not a mystery, it is built out of the same materials as any other engine, it has torque specs for the bolts like every other engine. If you can rebuild one engine you can rebuild them ALL, its just a matter of following the specs. I bet my dick-hole that those $2,000 valve springs are made by the exact same company that makes $200 valve springs for chevy's and guess what its the exact same spring maybe the diameter is slightly different but it come out of the same machine , but because it says porsch on it they know morons will pay 10x more for it, in fact those morons want to pay 10x more because it adds to the illusion of prestige. god forbid they realize it has the exact same stainless steel valves as a pickup truck.

Any decent restorer/tuner would do a good job. Simple old engines with no secrets to be decoded... A friend had his porsche engine rebuilt by a VW restorer. Made 8 hp more than stock on the dyno and still runs perfect after 15 years of daily use april - october. Maintenance and tuning of the carbs is all that's been needed. Thumbs up for Marco tho!

This is a performance engine, not a Camry. It's probably been driven accordingly (hard) for the past decades. Plus you don't know if the car ever got proper maintenance with its previous owners. These engines have a reputation for being extremely good and reliable for a reason, but even amongst the best of engines, you'll always find some that fail earlier, most likely because of poor maintenance or sometimes just bad luck. The difference is, with any "normal" car, people are just going to sell it for scrap and not spend the money to do a rebuild.

yes LS swap it, LS1 5.7L are expensive for whatever reason look for a 6.0L but be weary most are used to death because only heavy duty truck got them and for the same price you could get a low miles clean 5.3L add a cheap cam and long tube headers will net you a easy 400hp and still idle decent. But first i'd take a look around for a 351 Windsor cause you might find one dirt cheap plus it should pretty much bolt right in, its a much stronger block then a 302 and has so much more potential. those 49 cubes make a noticeable difference especially once you start adding bold on's

With that washing issue on the piston crown I'd be thinking of going with a rebuilt short motor. If oil has been getting past the rings, there is a possibility fuel has been going in the opposite direction, mixing with oil and being sent back up, it may not have been happening but is it worth risking? Top end rebuild on a suspect bottom end, all on an engine with a history of burning oil, not something I would ever recommend. (As an aside, I earned my mechanics certs on VW's and air-cooled VW engines).

Lol, I live locally in Venice in west LA and this is exactly why I had my rebuild done out of state by an A/C specialist. My 3.2 top end rebuild was 12k including new fuel lines, rotor, cap, sound pad, clutch and all the other shit you do when the motor is out. 20k is absolute robbery.

The machine work on the heads is in the 600-1000 dollar range with the new valve guides. Dont know what the spring and retainers run but it cant be more than 1000 bucks Id guess under. Cam is 1200 bucks for a billet 964ish grind. CP piston set is 1100 bucks. Throw another 1000 in for gaskets seals and other consumables. = 5300 RNR of that motor i think pays 15 hours including pressure testing it and adding fluids. @ 300 an hour = 4500. (300 an hour is insane) That leaves 8000 or more to have a machine shop check the jugs and pistons. Slap rings on it and bolt the jugs down 8k would pay for 30+ hours of labor 18 to 20k is total rebuild money with some hotrod parts.

94K ain't shit even for a cheap American car from the 80s , basically anything pre 72 is only a 100k engine due to piston ring materiel, valve seats, poor rod ratios causing piston side loading but by the 80s the engine its self was easily a 150k to 200k before it started blowing smoke or wearing down a cam and losing compression (now the rest of the car would fall apart but were talking engines here)

It is soooo interesting how similar to my modified beetle motor this is. I do a refresh like this once in a while as well. In the last 15 years I have performed maybe 4 refreshes like you are doing (new pistons/cylinders/rings/ go through the heads) usually at a cost of 500.00 per refresh. I have had to go through the short block 3 times due to an oil starvation issue that I finally resolved (remember I race this ALOT). It is fun to watch the pro look at the short block knowing the pandora's box that it is to split apart (its good, he says.....I am sure it is and I am sure he does NOT want to go through it unless totally necessary. ….) Make sure he replaces the oil pump. The refresh is so easy that you Mr Matt could have done it. I would have replaced the pistons and cylinders with new Mahle, looks like he is reusing yours. Maybe have him port the heads while it is out.

Had an 81 and got 243,000 out of it before rebuild. This was back in1998. Rebuild was pretty expensive to farm out so did it myself for under 2k in parts. Am sure the parts are more expensive now. If you are able, these motors are not so bad to do top end on.

There are a lot of terrible German/Euro cars that will explode if you look at them the wrong way. But most of these old Porsche units (excluding the 2.7L) are solid motors. However, they are still really expensive to get repaired.

@Tex 13 late 2000's Benz 3.5L are Lemons and there is a class action lawsuit over it, i had two first a 08 clk350 that got rod knock at only 32K miles and after the dealer refusing to fix saying that its normal for the rods to knock on cold start i said if its fine then i want to trade for a different car on you lot i'll pay the difference, i upgraded to a 09 clk350 with better trim package and only 28K miles well jokes on me after its first dealer oil change it also started to rod knock and the variable intake runners were broken so it had no bottom end torque and to top it off the cam end seals leaked. There is also another class action suit for the timing chain tensioner being a known issue and benz knowingly refusing to fix it.

This is pretty cool Matt. I learned a lot in this one. Just being able to look at the heads gives me a very rough idea how air-cooling is even possible, with each cylinder head looking like a big heatsink. Marco is great- you should have him on TST podcast. Engine builders and guys with this amount of knowledge should continue to be heralded and archived--- I simply won't get the same info-boner listening to kids from MIT telling me how batteries work.

This is the video I have been waiting for for the past 3 years or so Yes, you hates VLOGS, including the word vlog. It's understandable. But from a pure maths perspective it makes as much, if not more sense than even the OneTakes. You have minimal financial burden, so th ebreak even point is super low You have a YT Channel that is lacking in views in the past year or so but have the biggest Automotive podcast there is. Obviously people are interested in your charakter more than the actual content (the specific car you are driving) The only downside I can see is the time spent, the stigma that's attached to vlogs, as well as you hating having to do it. But please give it a shot if the downsides aren't too much of a hassle

Air cooled tolerances have to be a lot looser to allow for thermal expansion and contraction. Thus more oil gets by.

That price for a top end rebuild seems really, really high. That's the price I get from my local specialist for a full rebuild. I'd say $8k would be the market price for just the top end. The unfortunate thing is that's a rebuild with no increase in performance. Which is why people put LSx' into these things so often- and I'm thinking of it too on my 964. $18-$20k for an engine that produces between 150 to 300 HP (in my 964) is insane when you can get 500+ so cheaply from Chevy. Flame away purists- those Renegade Hybrid conversions are BAD ASS>

@@eeterp32 that statement is true if you don't go to rip off specialty parts suppliers that rip you off based off of the name stamped into the front of your car. Just hit up the chevy race parts suppliers because a lot of parts aren't really that different in spec and half the time there are dozens of custom fitments. I've seen a professional engine builder user Chrysler main bearings in a Lotus engine with almost zero modification, finding the original bearings was near impossible and they weren't that good anyways. This is very true with valve springs, as i have personally had vortex heads milled to use high lift springs. So i can almost assure you that my local machine shop could with very little machining get those Porsche head to accept standard valve springs, valves and retainers, im not talking about OEM junk rather high end endurance racing parts which are probably better quality and still cheaper then the OEM Porsche parts. Now oblivious you can't just slap off the shelf parts in and expect it to work but if you know the clearances and actually have the skill like the porsch mechanic claims to have it makes sense to retro fit the engine.
