I agree 100%. Just getting into making smaller items from wood over the last year, these have been a lifesaver. I've watched too many KZbinrs on woodworking that either call a more advanced build a simple starter project or show you how to build it without giving you any measurements, including the size of the wood itself. I've actually watched a few that were so convoluted that the project seemed to be aimed at a much more experienced woodworker. Yet when I managed to take a pic of the finished item, blew it up a little, and looked at it, I could figure it out and realized it was actually very simple. It was just poorly explained by the builder. I enjoy your videos because you explain each step, all materials used, and cut sizes in a manner easy to follow. Being a Georgia gal, I learned there's no sense in using 50 cent words to describe a 5 cent process. Mathew, you are greatly appreciated. Much thanks.

After watching almost all the videos especially the pallet projects. Not only does everything look fantastic but the time and mathematics involved is absolutely amazing, mind boggling actually. I didn't give it much thought until I decided to make a couple serving trays. I had a 6in circumference by 15in long red cedar log. After cutting it in half then squaring it up. Which came out roughly 4×4×14 then I had to come up with a design to utilize the material I had, that took me almost 2 hours. How, thick, how long, how wide, beveling edges and what not. So with plans in hand the project came to life. Of course I to modify as I went along but finally it came together. So, hats off to you sir for taking the time for laying everything out. Mad respect

On the star: start the cup with an oscillating tool, then switch to a jigsaw. Also, before staining use a stain conditioner to prevent blotchiness.

Would be a little cleaner to do a plunge cut with a circular saw. Doesn't matter as long as the cat is skinned. :)

I’d get 1/16” flat bar in 1”, 1.5”, 2”, etc (by however many feet long you’d like (2’, 3’, 4’ (or 0.5 - 1 meters) and cut cross slices off of it in the length that you need. If you were doing this regularly, it would be worth it to set up a jig for using a cutoff disc. Otherwise, ask your local steelworks place for their 1/16” off cuts already plasma cut for a small fee. Use some blueing on the steel to “age” it instead of black paint. Edited for spelling & clarity

You could use fencing staples [double point tacks] to hold the “cutting boards/ fraternity paddles) together. They come in a ton Of sizes.

Since you are always talking about saving money on projects here is one I use. For mixing glue or other sticky things I save those postcard type flyers you get in the mail. The glossy side gives you a smooth surface for mixing and they are disposable, not to mention free. In addition to just mixing you can also use them to spread, just mix in the middle then fold in from both sides and on one end forming a basic tube. Then you can squeeze the glue out as you spread it.

Cutting boards: My suggestions: *Hard eastern maple. It has anti-bacterial properties. IF the board needs a repaired split, I would heartily recommend a Nakashima butterfly. Fast joint and people love them. A metal staple will gouge those expensive granite countertops.

Mathew your a great inspiration, I just got done making the flag out of scrap wood which was totally free except the large paint sticks I used the long paint sticks for the frame and the free wood to make the flag part it’s a little ruff looking but I stained the part where the stars will go blue and the rest antique oak came up with my own measurements basically 17in by 14in on frame and cutting to fit all my slats long and short. I used wood glue and 1” brad nail for frame and slats and filled in all the holes and sanded before staining I’m actually surprised it turned out ok probably middle school level but for first time attempting it I’m ok with that 😂 I’ve wanted to build one for a long time and with just the picture and your encouragement and positivity I was able to make it happen in a couple of hour’s surprisingly! I feel like the wood went to good use instead of sitting here collecting spider webs and dust now I have a US flag. So cool! Can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next video😂love them all thank you❤❤❤❤❤

A freekin 2x8 honestly people really will buy anything. Byw ave sent my latest project to the brag board. Going to the stitch board i done a coffe table that had couple small cracks didnt wanna do inlays etc i used bright coloured coper wire and done it as a cross hatch pattern looked wicked. @gregpreston7301 I'm a crafter who didn't use much of my limited woodworking skills or tools for more than repairs, upgrades, or little odds and ends around my house or the occasional gift before I came across Matthew's smalls videos. I'll admit, I'd make like one of the things to see if I could pull it off, but just too scared to make more to sell. After being out of work for several months, due to health issues brought on by Covid, my savings was gone, credit card maxed and I was making myself sick, stressing over how to survive. I had a lot of "scrap" wood and there were several buildings and neighborhoods going up around me where the builders gladly let me have their scrap. This motivated me to take those smalls, I had one of and start building dozens of each. Slowly my crafting has drifted away from a lot of what I use to make to my smalls. Just set a goal for yourself, let's say you want to make crates, tell yourself "let's see if I can make 5 or 10". Figure out how many of each cut you need and mass cut, them assemble them. I timed myself on each step, averaged it and knew how much time each took. This is important when pricing your items. Never undercut your time's value. I actually made a game out of each different item I made and before I knew it I had at least a dozen of each different item. It's amazing how good it makes you feel to see what you've done. Good luck! You can do it!

The last time I saw a repair like this was when my Jr. High Woodshop Teacher had pulled a table out of an old farm house storage barn/building. It only had 3 of 4 legs, and on bottom side of it were 3 square-nails folded over. My shop teacher described what had been done to make the repair. He had no true way of knowing the exact age of the table, it was made of oak (probably at least mid-1800's, if not before then.)but the newer farmhouse which was being torn down was built before indoor plumbing was a thing, because plumbing was added to the house, and ran along the base boards, and boxed-in along the base boards. There were ruins of an old, mostly burned down plantation home on the property as well. He said that wood likely cut from horse driven saw mill.

Love your videos man, I work at a cabinet company where we build and install custom cabinets, I’ve been taking home a lot of the drops/scraps but most of it is plywood, where only one face of it looks good. Do you think a video of using plywood drops or scraps would be something you put out one day? I think it would get a lot of people to conserve and use as much of that expensive cabinet grade plywood as possible! TIP: 6:18 Making Stars; you can cut the negative star out with a multi-tool so that the cut lines will all be straight edged. LOL yw.

That star if you drilled tiny 1/8 holes you can fish a Scrollsaw blade in it and cut out the entire center. You could take the center from the first one and cut it out making several different sizes. Scroll saws are a easy to use tool the kids can learn on. My dad had a craft business in the 80's and 90's. I started on the scroll saw around age 8. I use to make wooden tulips from scrap ply wood you cut the flower head and ten a leaf. I use to drill a hole in them and put the on a 1/4 in dowel rod for a stem. After making hundreds of them one day I had a Idea. Instead of using a dowel rod I used the flat metal binding straps for lumber. 3/4 in wide and they would wave in the wind. Super easy. I got 6 bucks each in the early 90s and my mom could not keep them in stock in our craft store. spray paint the leaf and stem green and the flour all different colors, Easy $ cheap takes little time,

I've actually made wood frames with hardwired cloth in them before. It was one of the designs I tried for an aviary. Was kind of a pain in the butt to do, getting that stuff in the grooves clean and snug. But those were 30"x30" panels. Wonder if the smaller version would be easier, might have to give that build a try.

What would be really awesome on the flag would be to stain the stripes different shades and to cut out the star shapes with a dremel and tiny router bit(if they make them 🤷‍♂️) and install some led lights behind it with maybe red, white and blue or set them to oscillate red, white and blue!!

Love the "hanging" boxes, but see them with little block feet as standing boxes. The laser engravers are really cool. But as someone who's planning on going tiny, as in building a skoolie next year, I have to be realistic where tools are concerned. After my build, I'll be selling off all but the necessary smalls building tools, so no room for a big laser machine. Lol

Another great video thanks for sharing really weird on the Flag build how they only went with 11 strips I have a mini one I bring camping it is from Max F on here his build I always want to make a bunch and try selling them when we are camping, lots of foot traffic people like to display their campsites

Hi Matthew! The star project would be perfect to salvage the middle star with a laser cutter/ engraver. If anyone who has access to one or has a friend who owns one, I would recommend hitting them up for this project.
