This video is now in my favorites list on KZbin! I fly a mavic pro and often am disappointed with some of my shoots. I am definitely going to try these tips out. I have been trying to perfect my cinematic moves with my drone. The ones that I like to use most often are • the reveal shots where a tall object like a tree or building is revealed by flying the drone backward over it or beside it (it makes the footage more exciting and gives the viewer a more immersive feel) and • the rotating pan shot where I fly the drone sideways while rotating it the opposite direction.

Everything is fine, but the crop bars is a bad advice. Many phones and TV's have wider screens and using bars looks aweful. The correct way is setting the proper aspect ratio in the project.
@farook_5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. What I dont understand is, why do people add these crop bars anyway. Couldnt they just set the right aspect ratio 🤔
@nunmpedro5 жыл бұрын
I understand that is not the most correct, but sometimes, putting the bars serves to ensure that there is always the black frame even if the video is not seen in fullscreen. And that helps the viewer focus on the video, I think.
@HiyuMarten5 жыл бұрын
@@nunmpedroIt is hard to focus on a video in fullscreen on an ultrawide monitor when there is a huge crop all around the outside though - especially if the video is good, it feels like lost potential.
@nunmpedro5 жыл бұрын
@@HiyuMarten Yes, you're right. But I think that's why people use crop bars. Of course it has downsides.
@benfromsg5 жыл бұрын
There is a technique/cheat where the aspect ratios change throughout the movie, usually creeping from a tighter ratio to a wider one in order to alter the feel and vibes that the scene is trying to give off. Bars seem like a good way to do that but again, I doubt most people know this technique

Would be amazing to learn to use it tho
@PetrosofSparta5 жыл бұрын
As a side note on the shallow depth of field, I'd say the depth of field is really important - but it needs to be used right. If you want your footage to look cinematic you need to know "what you're shooting". If it's a close-up, you want to focus on the subject and remove the background, that's where a super shallow look can be great. When you're going wider, what is the story you're trying to tell? Obviously, it's not a personal moment, you obviously want to be wider to focus on the subject and their position in the world, so super shallow might not be ideal. Longer lenses typically will do this automatically but sometimes tweaking that aperture to make sure it's telling the story with the depth of field that will work with it is important. The beauty of 2D cinema is the ability to force your audience to focus on something or someone, and that's where the depth of field comes into play.

Number 4 got me. Since i myself like to use 2.35:1 aspect ratio, i tend to make my sequence in that aspect ratio in the first place. So instead 1920x1080 i use 1920x818. As EposVox explained in his video about people doing cinematic looks wrong, he explained that adding black bars to video might make your whole video look worse especially if there's heavy bitrate scenes, since those black bars takes bitrates to render as well.

A friendly challenge.... Yes, we all know that one fps rules them all for cinematic footage, Glory 24! Just like we all knew, until your excellent video, that 4k ruled them all... Matti, this is a friendly challenge, with all my respect and gratitude... Could you do a honest (I know you are always honest but you know what I mean) comparison between 24 fps and 30 fps with everything else the same (you are allowed to optimize the shutter speed) in an intentionally cinematic shoot. We know it will look soap opera but how much soap opera compared to to the cinematic 24? Thanks again for what you do!

#6: Your opinion. TONS of movies don’t use gimbals for smooth shots and they also prefer the shakiness of it to give it stylized look.
@phillow5 жыл бұрын
tons of movies use camera cranes, robot arms and rails for smoother camera movement. So I guess there are different situations that require different tools.
@alexmatthew3755 жыл бұрын
@@phillow Exactly, but to imply that it has to be smooth footage otherwise it's not cinematic doesn't make sense.

@@alexmatthew375 yeah, you're right.
@codexonline99155 жыл бұрын
@@alexmatthew375 but he didnt say solely smooth footage = cinematic. He clearly stated that be aware of what you're trying to shoot and film accordingly. And btw, the handheld look/camera shake as a stylistical effect is still very relevant when talking about smooth movement. If ur not paying attention to keeping your movement smooth, even your intentionally shakey footage can be too shakey or have jarring spikes in movement which are not cinematic. What is implied with smooth isn't perse having perfectly buttery smooth A to B motion, but having controlled motion.
@alexanderhamilton8765 жыл бұрын
I would've assumed it's typically shot smooth with the shake added in post to allow more control?

Matti! Great video - it’s so nice to have all of these tips compiled into one video. Here’s a thought for you though: I think that’s there IS a time and place for shaky / handheld footage. For example, high intensity athletic videos. I think using a gimbal on a project like that would contrast the high intensity of the content and create a conflicting feeling in the footage. Maybe it would be better to match the intensity of the camera movement with the intensity of the subject? I’d love to hear your thoughts.🙌🏼
