I bought this game forever ago on PSP when I was in the army and didn't care for it originally due to the confusing chase segments. Then, years later, when I was in work release (jail, allowed personal electronics without cameras), I picked it up again. I was locked up for an alcohol offense and ended up getting the alcoholic "bad" ending. I literally started crying on the spot right there in my bunk. This game cut straight through my heart and still has a massive effect on me. I'm now 8 years sober and have a daughter of my own who I love deeply and am glad she will never have to see me drunk.

The funny thing about Silent Hill is that it was inspired by western movies and culture, but it's the interpretation from a foreign perspective that makes the work stand out. There's just something about being inspired by a culture you don't fully understand that makes it all the more alluring.

@@Catheidan it's set in Japan and made by Japanese, why? Is it about Asuka being German? I don't think it changes anything...
@persona3rulez2 ай бұрын
Nah, I'd argue there's nothing about the perspective, it's the horror culture that matters. Just compare the Japanese Ring movie and the American one. You'll see that the Japanese is rather bright, warm, quiet and it's about "horror in broad daylight". It makes you feel uncomfortable through the idea that your everyday life won't change even if some evil ghost is trying to kill you. You'll go to work, meet your friends, do the grocery and e.t.c. until it's night again and suddenly you remember the horrors you've seen on that tape and the days go by you get more and more paranoid, your horrific death is near but the whole world doesn't know about it and you yourself don't know if you should go to work or try to do something about your inevitable fate. One of the victims, well, technically two victims, have died in a car. Like, the premise shows you that a TV isn't required for Sadako to kill her victims, they'll die with horror on their faces no matter what they're doing and where. That's the scary part. You can't escape it and nobody will notice it. It's even scarier than Freddy Krueger since you have to at least fall asleep before he kills you, while Sadako WILL kill you in broad daylight and NOBODY will know the cause. Now look at the American one. It has this disgusting green filter, it's constantly trying to disgust you with all the bugs and dead horses(which I don't remember in the Japanese one), there are also these omens like a stepladder. I mean, yeah, the Japanese tape also had these bizarre and absurd scenes but not a stepladder on a white wall, lol. Basically, where Japanese tried to make you have paranoia everywhere you go, Americans just make you... well... vomit, I guess? The film tries to scare it's viewers with disgusting imagery, the idea is that it makes you wanna throw up, that's why you'll feel uncomfortable and that's why when Samara(a.k.a. Sadako) shows up you've already feeling unwell and want the movie to end. Well, it kinda works and people kinda love this kind of movies. If you think about it, The Thing was also really disgusting, The Fly, The Saw is kinda disgusting and e.t.c. It's the western way. Now, it doesn't mean ALL western writers do that, many try to be original, but it's the viewers who like it. Different mentality. Japanese really love horrors that are as down to earth as possible. The more realistic it gets, the better it is and by realistic I don't mean the quality of CGI, it's the atmosphere of everyday life and the simplicity of the horror. It kinda applies to most Asians btw. Silent Hill went hybrid and did something that both parties could admire. Western audience loves the creatures and the themes, Eastern audience loves the originality and the atmosphere, especially 4 should be dear to them but something went wrong. Well, they have Fatal Frame 3 which has a rather similar idea. Oh, yeah, Fatal Frame 3 is a great example of turning Ring, The Nightmare on the Elm Street and Ju-On into a GOOD game. You have you're paranoia during home sequences, which at first feel rather calming, like a safe room in Resident Evil, until... And you have your genuine fear of ghosts and jumpscares during dream sequences. It's not about making something about a different culture, it's BEING in a different culture. The Japanese did their horror like a Japanese person would, the Americans did their horror like an American would. SH 1? Being locked in an unknown environment searching for a close one, no help whatsoever. 2? Being the only one who sees the horrors that haunt you personally. 3? Again the only one seeing horrors and it's also about a young girl running from shady people(fear of being kidnapped and she's also locked out from everybody else at the mall). 4? Can't feel safe at home, spooky, also Freddy Krueger vibes. Homecoming? Disgust and violence, simple as that(oh, and PTSD taken from Jehovah's Ladder). Downpour? That's... Dude running from police??? Uhm... well... I actually don't know how to interpret it, lol. Origins was kinda good because it tried to be SH 1. Shattered Memories was kinda okay because it tried to be psychological but it's actually just another PTSD story and there weren't any monsters to begin with.

As an outsider to the Silent Hill series, Shattered Memories has always seemed like a "Super Paper Mario" situation to me A game that plays wildly differently from its predecessors, and when it comes to root aspects that really matter in "What makes a game in this series", some aspects are completely absent, yet the ones that are there are done so well they almost kinda overflow and slightly fill in the holes of the missing aspects All of this ultimately leading to a divisive game where one half of the fanbase disowns it and calls it just as bad as all the other stinkers after the golden era, and the other half happily puts it up alongside the golden era entries as one of the best regardless of how different it is Honestly, I hope I can get my hands on a copy and play it for myself some day I don't really do well with horror [if you need an idea on how bad, when I was a kid playing *Luigi's Mansion* for the first time, I was shaking like a chihuahua], but everything I've ever seen about Shattered Memories has always cemented it as an incredibly interesting game in my mind

From a guy who's played Silent Hill Shattered Memories I feel the Cold Heart pitch concept sounds legions better than whatever that "Reimagining" of the 1st game tried to be, it would've filled a niche for Survival Horror on the Wii which other Resident Evil carrying that genre and a few other games there wasn't much on there and I think maybe it could've gotten more fans than it currently does. Plus it would've been historically the second time the series would get a female protag for a mainline entry, three if you count the sub scenario from the director's cut/greatest hits version of SH2 where you play as Maria.

I love Climax's takes on Silent Hill. Homecoming and Downpour, while not HORRIBLE, felt too much like they wanted to be Silent Hill 2, while the spirit of the original 4 games was to experiment with every new entry, to never let Silent Hill feel static. We went from a town marred in creepy cult stuff, to a town that torments you psychologically, to a story of generational trauma and growing past it, to a pretty interesting supernatural crime thriller, where the town itself was the tool of murder. Shattered Memories does indeed capture that feeling.

"Apparently the series was quite popular in South and Central America and at that time PS2 was the dominant platform there, so a PS2 port was thrown into the mix" Meanwhile South and Central America pirating the shit out of PS2 games lol

Can you do one about the silent hill experience? That was a great thing for the PSP I loved the comic and the hidden music videos on it, just to bad it wasn't on console

Silent Hill 2 Remake doing good was the miracle we needed. Hopefully its a sign of greater things to come.

I remember i was very young maybe around 11, i ask my mother to get me an adventure ps2 game. Was expecting a silly game like lego or some cartoon game, instead i got traumatized by this

IDK what other's think but me and my nephew really liked this one... the psychological something something really got us hooked.. and the song... yeah...

I actually liked this game a lot, I used to play it every year around Halloween. I actually really liked the fact that you did not have weapons I found just running for your life pretty intense. Some of the motion control stuff was good and I really liked what they did with the flashlight. However trying knock those "things" off you with Wii motion controls can go straight to silent Hill.

Shattered memories was a interesting game in my opinion

One of the few SH games I still replay. Love reading the psychological report that is shown alongside the ending credits. Also, I am not a big fan of the Silent Hill cult, so I am glad it was gotten rid of.

I still remember the twist end of Shattered Memories, which made the therapy sessions made more sense.
