DCS: Supercarrier and Hornet | Automatic Carrier Landing System

Dear all, we apologize for any confusion the upcoming inclusion of ACLS to the Hornet may have caused. A primary reason for the development of DCS: Supercarrier was to provide the most realistic carrier operations ever done for a PC flight simulation. Key aspects of this include the new Link 4 datalink and Beacon systems specifically created for the Hornet (just recently completed) and the new ATC radio communication system. While the ATC radio communications system will remain a unique feature of DCS: Supercarrier, we are investigating moving Link 4 datalink and Beacon (BCN) from SC to the free carrier. This would use the existing communications for the free carrier of simply messaging inbound. When we have more information on this, we look forward to updating you.

I have the SC and I absolutely love it, but I have to say that I wouldn't have expected this either (for the people who don't own it). Thank you, I am glad that you guys will give it a thought, and hopefully introduce Link4 to the free carrier (as long as it is viable to do so regarding the coding that goes behind all that).

Because DCS World is a FREE simulator, DCS Stennis is fine as-is. When I look at the alternatives to carrier aviation in other sims, DCS Stennis is actually better than the payware options in most of the things that matter for standard CV ops (and Stennis DOES support ICLS for low vis recovery). So having ACLS limited to the premium SuperCarrier is reasonable, IMHO.

They don't seem to care that people bought something that was advertised and then stuck behind a paywall. ED moving this feature to a free carrier is the correct course of action to resolve this.

Wags! Former F-18 avionics technician here. One of the stories the more senior guys in my squadron told me is that when developing the ACLS, it was so accurate at hitting the same spot on the flight deck that the tailhook was tearing up the non-skid/flight deck. They had to program the datalink to be accurate, but not too accurate and put an acceptable margin of error into the system. That way it's still catching a wire but just not at the same spot everytime.

Apologies, I misspoke regarding Mode 2. Rather disable the D/L you are simply never coupling. So: Mode 1: Coupled to recovery. Hands off until on the deck. Mode 1A: Coupled and then decoupled (Paddled). Generally, at the “ball” call. Mode 2: Never coupled. Manually flying with ACLS guidance. I also forgot the TILT message. You will receive this if you lose datalink for more than two seconds.

I flew a Case III with the new patch, taking off (FINALLY THE WANDS!!!) and flown in pitch blackness, no NVG's. Started down on-time from the stack and pulled in an "Okay 3-Wire". Quite possibly my best nighttime manual landing ever. The tadpole certainly helps.

Great video ED and Wags. Been waiting for this and will enjoy. Especially with fog turned on ! Just a little advice for people who like me take a little time to digest this instruction to get this to work, that this instruction didn’t show or mention. You need to set up the Carrier up as normal, ie TACAN, ILS along with the Link 4 etc that Wags showed in Mission Editor. Also when executing, you need to be pretty close on the glide scope ie The needles at around 5.5 miles to be able to couple up. You don’t need to be spot on just there abouts. You do need to go through the various comms layers ie Commencing, check in etc to get the Data on the Link 4 page but you can fly straight to the last Data link ie 140 & 1200ft @ 6 miles out if you just are practicing and want to see it work.

@@brandonchappell1535 That's what the bolter pattern is for, something ED needs to get to implementing into Case-3. I remember Jane's F/A-18 had it in there. "Climb and fly runway heading until established 1200ft, turn left downwind (heading)" and then they'd tell you to turn into the groove at about 2-3 miles.

From my own personal experience back when I was still constantly practicing my carrier landings, it always felt like the jet was slowly getting sucked into the deck like a sort of "reverse ground effect" the closer I got to the boat. Because of this, I developed a (bad?) habit of lighting the blower a good .5 to 1 second before the actual touchdown to counter this weird effect. The hornet engines aren't that great to begin with anyway so I was never worried about breaking anything even if I snagged a wire in full blower.

Use voice attack! It’s free and super handy. I set mine up to where F1-F12 are bound. I say “Check One”, “Check Two” since “F 5” and so on would get annoying considering the game we are playing.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean. We've mentioned many times that carrier support for ACLS was being creating for SC and corresponding ACLS work for the Hornet. We've never said ACLS was coming to the old, free carrier. In fact, it would not even be possible given that it cannot support the comms or Link4 created for ACLS. Sorry for any confusion.

I had to land manually in the end. For some reason the CPL didn’t work and I never was asked to call the ball. Data link was good. Not sure where I went wrong. Either my comms with mother or I didn’t wait long enough at the holding point. Where do I find the clock? They asked me to wait and hold a few minutes. Will try again on my day off. I was happy take it down Cat III mission 👍🏻

336 is for a different carrier but this is used as the default. You just must check the kneeboard to make sure the correct one is entered.

Whenever I get close to the carrier and am on speed, it will drop the nose down and try to kill me. It must change the trim because even with full stick back it is difficult to pull out of the dive it puts me in. What is up with this? Also the ATC keeps fluctuating like a sine wave.

Hi Wags, 2 queries....what situations cause the "Tilt" message in normal flight and if you want to do a straight in, how do you stop mother directing you to the marshal stack instead when you check in?

If it is a Case III condition, you must first establish yourself in the stack and only push at your allocated time. You will get the Tilt message when you are too far outside the approach angle.

Well I can't get this to work lol. I set it up in the mission editor activate "acls" and "datalink 4" But I also have "ICLS Ch 1" and TACAN 71x" set up for waypoint 0, which you did not do. Are they interfering with the ACLS? I get to the point where I have to hit the "CPL" button in the autopilot. I do not get CPL on the HUD. There is a "M" next to the CPL button, i don't know what that means. I just end up flying over the carrier. I am trying to land on good old Teddy Roosevelt.

I can do every single part in this and at 5.5 miles they give me the final acls call and get the data and when I hit CPL it doesnt give me the pitch and thrust and just says HDG and crashes me into the water. What am I doing?

Thank you. Excuse my ignorance, However, when you setup your aircraft you setup ILS on Channel 11. Where did this come from? I didn’t see you config this in mission editor? Do we need to configure ILS as well as ACLS? I understand you may have excluded this setup for clarity of your demo but am I correct; we need to setup TACAN, ICLS, Link 4 and ACLS in mission editor for carrier??? Been having problems with this working. Everything works as intended to until I hit the coupled mode, at which point it either turns off after a few seconds or it steers me into the ocean. I can't maintain 140 kts at 1200' likely due to me being too heavy. What's the max weight for this to work correctly, assuming this is the cause fire it decoupling? Also, how can I see what my current weight is in flight?

Also one last thing. I tried this and although the coupling managed my roll and pitch, I still couldn't land properly because I have no idea how to set auto-throttle. You mentioned Cruise Control in the video but didn't say how to do it.

The carrier was probably not configured in the Mission Editor for Link 4.
