I have to say, It’s hilarious how many “permanent tourists” are speaking out like they are natives to the island. They’re speaking truth, but it sounds ridiculous hearing the rich elite that could afford to live there FROM the mainland acting like they have everything in common with the true native Hawaiians.

I live in Kauai now, but I have lived on all of the major Hawaiian islands, including Maui. I can completely understand all of the emotions out there, but there simply is no getting around the fact that Hawaii’s economy depends on tourism. Maui NEEDS tourism, even if it does not WANT tourism. The resorts are on the westside, high-end shopping is on the westside, some of the best beaches are on the westside-shutting down the westside costs jobs, impacts businesses, and cuts tourism on the whole island drastically. Simply put: a lack of tourism makes all of the problems there WORSE, not BETTER. For the sake of the whole island, they need to make sure they are making wise decisions, not decisions based on raw emotionalism.
@madinechaney3043
@madinechaney3043 11 ай бұрын
They are not opposed to tourism....only around Lahaina where it's devastated. They need and welcome visitors, just not in Lahaina where emotions are raw and residents traumatized and in recovery.😥 🙏
@douglaspinsak1246
@douglaspinsak1246 11 ай бұрын
@@madinechaney3043 I don't know if you have been to Maui, or lived in Maui, but that is just not practical. As you are driving up the westside, there are just "hills of nothing" until you get to Lahaina. Once you get to Lahaina, there is no viable way to get to Kalapaki, Whaler's Village, Kapalua, all of the resorts/golf courses without driving through Lahaina. If you shut off Lahaina, you shut off thousands of premium resorts rooms, premium shopping, several golf courses--there is probably more tourism money brought in north of Lahaina than the entire rest of the island combined. The only reasonable measure I can think of to accommodate Lahaina residents would be to prohibit tourists from parking or getting out of their cars until they get through the destroyed area. I know people on the Maui who have been talking about the hit the entire island is taking as a result of diminished tourism. Pretty much everyone on the island wants the whole island open, except for the Lahaina residents--that's why these people got 10,000 signatures on an island with around 150,000 people.
@Sea-cucumber1151
@Sea-cucumber1151 11 ай бұрын
@@madinechaney3043that doesn’t make sense. If you ever been to Maui, besides how can you completely shut off others from making a living? You can’t go all around the island meaning go up one side of Haleakala volcano) which is 75% of the island and down the other side making it a complete circle. You have to go back down the same way you went up. It’s hard to go around the island with out being in Lahaina at some point. It’s still a tiny island in comparison. When you rely on tourism for so much of the economy how can you deny it? I just don’t see how they can deny it. Maybe make it for any big hotel chain (Marriott, Hilton etc) give a percentage back to the people of Lahaina to rebuild their homes.

I have worked many years in the tourism industry in various locations including many years in Alaska. I have been to the Big Island and to Kauai, both times as a tourist. I also travel extensively in South America (off the beaten path)… having worked in tourism and traveling extensively I am not an idiot tourist - yes they exist I see them everywhere and from all cultures and backgrounds. Having said that, I do get targeted on occasion for being blonde/blue - such as getting asked for money in Colombia way more than my father who is dark hair/skin… no biggie. The ONLY place I have been harassed and threatened multiple times (physically threatened as well) was in Kauai. All 3 times I was alone and there were 3-7 locals. One of the times was very close to getting out of hand and my hair and Wiley color were mentioned repeatedly all 3 times. I honestly wish the US government would pull out and give the islands back to the people to run how they see fit. There is a very high percentage of Hawaiians who want to be sovereign and I wish we would move our Pacific fleet and operations to an island where it was welcomed. Let Hawaii be left to itself and make a new 50th state. It is hands down the most racist place I have experienced in my extensive travels and their threats worked - I will never go back and anyone I know who is planning to visit (and who looks like me) I try to dissuade them from doing so. In this sense I guess I am now an ally to the locals!

We came over to meet with the local car club . And we made two supply trips to Costco for donations . I understand it's a tricky situation with people coming over and we all hope that people respect your feelings and area. But Maui also needs the money coming from the tourism industry. Talking to many people there the main needs are housing . It seems that county won't help out with giving up land to put up temporary housing on the west side of the island, why ? How about using private land for this and have the state pay that person rent on there land ? Water is another huge problem, that issue needs to be addressed fast ! Just remember you are all taxpayers and voters you need to remind this local government about it!!!

There are still so many unanswered questions surrounding the fire. For starters, NO ONE is asking the really tough questions: 1. How many died as a direct result of all the exits from Lahaina being blocked by police? 2. How many died as a result of NO SIRENS being sounded and no warnings being give via cell phone? 3. Why isn't an independent audit being done by a REAL medical professional on the death count? Right now, the police chief - who is NOT a doctor nor does he have any serious medical training - is acting as the medical examiner, which is a clear conflict of interest. 4. Can they explain exactly how the death count can go from 115 to 97? 5. How many people drowned? How many died in fire? How many burn victims are there who survived? 6. What EXACTLY caused the fire? The fact that we still do not know the EXACT cause of the fire means that the burn zones are all crime scenes. Why is evidence NOT being preserved?

There should be an investigation into the cause of fire, fire anomalies and emergency response by an independent entity that's not associated with the government,an entity that people can trust. The governor wanted 15 minute cities and he is still pushing for it. Too many anomalies that favor only one side...it is kinda obvious. Many people feel that the governor and some other officials should be indicted but first real investigation needs to take place. Maui is 80% tourism... so if you want to go you should go...there are many other places on Maui that are totally fine to visit and they need more tourists.

Islands are fragile. For day to day living, they’re better to be self reliant. Over building would quickly pollute the land with dump sites, re-route or dry up water ways, pollute marine life, make it harder to bury loved ones and the list goes on to higher shipping costs. We humans consume a lot of commodities and we’re trashy. The size of Maui, Hawaii has to be careful. If tides do continue to rise, the island is shrinking. I think Jupiter closest distance to Earth cycle makes more sense what’s going on. It’s gravity is pulling and stretching earth, doesn’t it make sense magma is rising. Volcanoes have come to life all over the world. Certainly it would melt glaciers and our oceans. Anyways, There’s something fishy going on here, The Governor is in a rush to get tourists tax money, still doing a horrible response effort, understandably survivors are ticked. Tourists on Maui will need to walk on eggshells.
