Mating patters, endgames, and openings have names! So yes, you can learn the opening moves like Shoryuken, and the finishing moves like the Lucena position or the smothered mate

I remember seeing him during a chess tournament in Bad Wiessee, Germany back in 1997. Maurice Ashley seemed absolutely authentic and - unlike many other grandmasters - not even slightly aloof or vain. He is certainly one of the best commentators around today.

I’ve played chess my whole life. My dad taught me the rules. He also once told me that “at the end of the game, no matter who wins, all of the pieces, black and white, go back in the same box!” That’s why I love the game :)

Maybe he does 3 hrs of cardio? Chess doesn't require a ton of strangth, but it does require stamina.

Some might know this... But Magnus Carlsen, the current chess champion He played 20 people blind folded simultaneously with very little time on his clock. He won all games.

@@vertsang5424 1 game blind folded is impossible for 99% of people. He did 20 games at the same time! Memorized all those games, and all those moves, in his freaking head that's pretty incredible.

@@leadnitrate2194 of course yasser. But ive seen Jen yasser and alejandro and as great as the other two are I didnt like it. Ultimately the dream team of commentating is Jen yasser and maurice in my opinion. Yasser is classic but maurice brings that swag and makes it very interesting

@Gonzo Kaporal I knew what chess was before this interview. I just didn't care about it (and still don't). Thus, I knew none of the big names or famous matches. I replied to the original post because of the tone of "OMG I can't believe people don't immediately know " was silly and I addressed that. The fact that you're making such a stretch to generalize US culture from a 5min video says far more about your own closed mind than any other thing.
