Many foreigners don't realize just how deeply connected old school Finnish culture is to Latin music! :) Especially Spain and Italy, with a strong Tango culture from Argentina as well. I live in a small village called Eräjärvi, which is famous for it's vintage dance hall (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_hall), the old latino-influenced music is therefore a very important part of my life :) Dance halls are a big part of Finnish culture that many tourists never discover, sadly!

Quite a few of those songs are Finnish versions of foreign songs. Difficult to give a good view of the diversity of music performed and the evolution of music though the decades by listing one song from each year, from the same artists, from just few genres and only in Finnish. In general, what was trending elsewhere, was trending also in Finland. Added with the local quirks and versions.

This made me realise how much I love the great finnish classics from the 60's, 70's and 80's! At one point of my life I used to listen to that kind of music with my dad, we shared some good moments. Maybe I should go for a visit to listen to some music at some point again 🤔 That video was a good compilation, but I wish it had a bit longer snippets of the songs.

Italian songs were such a big thing back in the days. Italodisco was even a term. And its easier for you to say the Finnish words, as both languages are spelled pretty much the same.

Besame Mucho is a Spanish (Mexican) song from 1940. It is one of the most often recorded songs in the history of music. The Beatles used to play the hell out of it in their heyday. It goes sth like 'Kiss me, kiss me a lot, like this was our last night, kiss me because I'm afraid of losing you . . .' My father's dancing music, like Olavi Virta's tangos. The version by Andrea Bocelli is really effective. In Finnish, the one by Juha Eirto is very good. I recommend for another fantastic singer Georg Ots, from Estonia, who sang e.g. in Finnish.

So many good songs! Only songs that have Finnish lyrics. For sure there would be HIM, Nightwish, The Rasmus, Bomfunk MC`s etc. if English lyrics were included...

Sadly metal is completely absent from this list, even though they are super influential in Finnish music and outsell all the other genres 100 to nil. There is nothing that comes even close to Nightwish on this list Also, many of the older songs are Finnish covers of international hits since that was how music was made back then. Famous artists only performed songs from composers/writers, but hardly ever made the songs themselves. For example, almost all the hits of Elvis were not written or originally sung by him

Way too short samples. Should have been at least 15 to 20 seconds to be able to actually hear more than 1 bar of music. If you wonder if there was Finnish music before 1950, well, yes there was. _Dallapé_ orchestra was formed in 1925 and it's still going strong. It had many vocalists like _Georg Malmstén_ and his brother _Eugen. Olavi Virta_ made his biggest records in the 1950s, but he started his career already in the 1930s. _Henry Theel_ was hugely popular tango and schlager singer during the war. Also one of the biggest stars in the war era, not only in Finland but Sweden too, was _Harmony_ _Sisters_ , which was like Finnish version of The Boswell Sisters.
