Probably the most violent, non-cowboy movie that my entire family would watch together back in VHS days. My grandparents and all the way through to the youngest (myself, age 10) spent several weekends watching Terminator after dinner. A surprising choice for a "family movie", but only because it is so captivating and well done.

Rewatched it recently...almost flawless film. Filmed like a horror movie...with science fiction elements. Great action...great acting. Storytelling at its best. Really great intimate moments between Kyle and Sarah...great ending. Pacing is great...perfect length. It's a shame the terminator movies have lost a lot of what made the first great.

Lucaz99 Terminato was perfect for him, as he's wooden as fuck, but he's best perfromanes are in Predator, Conan AND Maggie(the zombie flick), he's on the edge of becoming a good actor, but i'm not sure he's there jet even after all these jears, if he didn't and can not lose that akcent of his than you know it's hard for sutch a persone to adopt a performance. But he's a smart guy and you can see he did some backround story of the characters he's playing but he can't portray all those leyers, not jet, maybe some day, maybe he'l be the next C.Eastwood. ;)

I know T2 is most peoples favorite, but sometimes it seems to me that people forget that if it wasn't for the brilliant setup in the first movie the themes of the second wouldn't have worked. The Terminator needed to be formidable and if we didn't see Sarah as a relatable average Jane and the Terminator as being a killing machine the character changes in the second film wouldn't have worked at all. The second movie played off of the first brilliantly, but the first movie didn't have that and was brilliant in itself. If the second movie was the first I saw as an adult I think it would seem a bit cliché and campy.

Another thing people forget with Schwarzenegger in this movie was that he was the villain and not the hero. The one thing I really liked with the first Terminator was that it wasn't reduced to being someone's pet. Terminator 2 was great, but I preferred the darkness of the first Terminator, and with Reese and Connor being mere humans, and with Reese not having any weapons on hand to defeat a Terminator like he would in the future, the danger I felt was far more real. Though in Terminator 2 the T-1000 far outclassed the T-800, still... you have a friggin' Terminator on your side. That alone removes quite a bit of danger. But in the first movie, they had none of that. All Reese had was experience (knowing how the Terminators worked) and weapons for the most parts that he knew to be ineffective. Also, in the end of the first movie, I absolutely loved the machine determination of the Terminator as it crawled with most of its body destroyed, to try to complete its mission. It almost did. But the look of the exposed T-800 closing in for its main kill was fucking awesome!

fun fact; Cameron wanted swartzinager as the bad guy from the beginning but the studio thought it would be insulting to cast such a big name as the villian. the only reason swatzinager wasn't cast as Reese is because ahnold agreed he would be a better terminator after reading the script.

Back when James Cameron was an emerging, talented, rather exciting writer and director...who had been taught much of the industry by Roger Corman, and knew how to make every single penny work five times harder... It's a shame, but now his work is nowhere near the level it once was. He used to get stuck in and involved in every element of the movie, be it manipulating the fog in Terminator 1 and 2, or supervising the 'reassembly' of the T1000 in Terminator 2, or even making the landing ship in Aliens...the guy got stuck in and did so much awesome work...like, he treated Action films as if they should be intelligently made, rather than the forgettable movies that come and go nowadays. Him and many others, such as John McTiernan, or Paul Verhoeven, knew what it took to make an action film more than the sum of its parts. It's a darn shame how much of his work nowadays is not on the same level as it once was, but I hold out hope that he has another movie of or equal to Terminator lurking in his bag of tricks.

I LOVE T2, heck I'm even in the minority for loving T3, but this film started it all. Perhaps the most underrated, realistic character has to be Kyle Reese played by Michael Bihen. You talk about the terminator not having any emotion, and I agree with your points. That's what bothered me about Genysis. I hated that the terminator displayed love for Sarah. I thought that was so stupid. He's not supposed to develop feelings; he's a machine. Or I should say IT is a machine.

Y'know it's funny, in T2 Arnold adamantly refused to play a "good guy". He wanted to be a villain, but they told him that they'd play him straight the whole time - he'd be a machine. Interesting eh? It's in the T2 director commentary. I, and I hate to say this, actually like Genisys. I see why you're so bummed because we all want to see that stoic machine again. But... I don't like to think that it's actually more "familiar" and has developed more "feelings". It's just older. Much older than any terminator we've seen, and as such, is excellent at mimicry. Even in T2 we see it developing better ways to blend in. Imagine raising a girl from like 9 years old how much data it would have accrued - and moreso how much it would've brainwashed Sarah Connor. Years upon years upon years of experiential datasets, experiences - it would seem to you and me quite "human" if it served its goal. Case-in-point T2. "Hey mom, what's wrong with wolfie, I can hear him barking". Perfect mimicry. In T2 we see the T1000 actually exhibit some warmth to Connor's step-parents and go as far as smiling and genuinely trying to assuage their worries. Jai Courtney falls pretty flat on his delivery, he's supposed to represent what Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese did - his fear isn't palpable and because of it, you never look deeper at the terminator in Genisys, even though it's well established that that thing has no recognizeable point of origin. It could very, very easily be working another angle and turn on them at any moment. That was a dynamic they tried to put in but totally failed at. I think they tried to make it a slightly too-subtle metapoint that THIS Sarah Connor is allll about the terminator, and its probably directly affected her development as a person, because in T2 she wanted to junk every last one of them.

I saw both Terminator and Terminator 2 for the first time in 2001 well after the hype surrounding T2. Honestly, I felt at that moment and until now, The Terminator is the superior film. T2 is a mix of hard R violence and segments meant for children, and was marketed to children. I was a kid in the early '90s and all the other kids had seen T2. I hadn't because I wasn't allowed to see R rated movies. Nevertheless, when I saw it as a teenager, I realized why my classmates liked it so much. It was a little hard and more than they should see in the violence, but still tame enough in its themes to be interesting to them. It's a good movie, but not nearly as good as the first Terminator for all the reasons Max highlights in his review. I feel that the people who say T2 is the superior film saw it as kids and wax nostalgic more than anything.

+Brian Cole I saw T2 when it came out. I was like 6 or 7 years old, and up until I reached adulthood, It was my favorite. Once I went back and watched Terminator, I realized it was better. T2 isn't as concise and sharp. T2 has a lot of dialogue issues, character issues. One of the biggest plot holes is that the terminator becomes emotional over the course of the movie with no explanation (unless you watch a deleted scene). So, I spent more than a decade being like "why did a killing machine learn to love a kid and value human life? especially this douche bag". And the biggest tone difference is the ending. Sarah driving towards the storm and future of war vs. the T2: the future is not set. It's a complete reversal. Terminator is better.

I f**king LOVE this film. I remember getting into a shouting contest with a guy on my degree who thought T2 was better.. I mean, its his opinion, BUT his opinion is WRONG!!! The Terminator plays out like a clean, clinical, sci-fi horror film... When i first saw it, when the guy (i won't say as its a spoiler, but everyone knows) gets killed, i was saying "no no, he's not dead, they never kill the main character..." that scene shocked me! I had never seen that before. And Terminator 2 as Max says, its good... Its an action film, with no tension, or anything like that really... And the fact that Sarah Connor in that space of 12 years went from a meek student/waitress to a fucking BADASS super woman. I didn't like too much, don't get me wrong! I love a great female lead.. But she was far more interesting of a character in T1.

T2 is the most natural evolution of a low-budget, sleeper hit like T1, both in technical terms as well as the story. After what Sarah had been through, she couldn't remain the same person. And what's great about the two Terminators is that they're the complete opposite of each other: one is bulky, destroys everything on his path, while the other one is skinny and reptilian-like, moving silently. And stills manages to be a lot scarier.

Retrovibes I totally agree, Robert Patrick is like a serpent stalking his prey. You know that he's not just a stupid machine, he bides his time. And has some degree of planning. And whats even more amazing is that the CG for the most part... Actually for the majority of the film still holds up today, the "hasta vista baby" scene, still looks incredible! I remember hearing Mario Kassar saying, for the sequel you need to give the fans what they loved about the first one, and something extra. But i feel that if there was more of that horror element, i'd like it a whole lot more. But there again, having 2 terminators instantly levels the playing field, so in that way there is no tension as there is humans vs machines.

The T-1000's slow, methodical hunting tactics in the first act as it gets closer to John, the entire escape from the mental hospital...the entire last 30/40 minutes of the film is fraught with building tension and suspense. "Oooohhh, I like T1 better because it's low budget and gritty so therefor it's better by default because anything made with a higher budget is just trash mannnnnn...." Oh fuck off. The Jaws I don't get "hipster revisionism" either. And its a well known fact that i was a hipster back in 1998 or whenever i saw bother Terminator films. The first Terminator, when i saw it aged 8 or 9, it scared the pants off me! Its terrifying! And after watching them both, i decided that the first one was my preferred choice.. For the reasons stated above, and additionally the reasons Max Landis has added. The second film, does exactly the same moves as the first film. To go so far as to rehash some of the same shots, or ideas. The chase in the car and the motorbike, vs the SWAT van and the liquid nitrogen truck And as for the tension. If you notice the in T1, the Terminator, the way he kills Sarah Connor in her house, the way he kills Sarah Connor (the one he was after)'s housemate and her boyfriend, the way he kills the people in Tech Noir! SO MUCH MORE DRAMATIC AND SCARY!!! You see blood, you see fear and panic, there's chaos! In the second film... You see bad terminator, him shooting the guy in the corridor of the Galleria, which in a way is quite comedic.. And the other deaths from the saw blades, which are cool.. But not scary in the way that T1 was. So to argue, to me at least! That T2 "ups the stakes, ups the drama, ups the emotion, ups the mythology and ups the action" I felt the stakes were far higher in the first film, you have 2 humans of flesh and blood going up against Arnie! Not an easy battle. Ups the emotions, not sure what that means. If you mean "i understand why you cry, but its something i could never do" **thumbs up through the molten metal** then, i.. don't get it. Ups the mythology, gotta agree there, judgement day and all that. Ups the action, not in a positive way, in my opinion. I felt the intimacy, and closeness of the action in T1, as i've stated above. Is seriously great! You see serious blood and violence, but in a way that helps the story. The second film tones this down too far for my liking. And the violence shown, isn't gory enough.. But then if you prefer the toned down violence of T2, and to substitute that with loads of guns, and miniguns, and repeater shotguns spinning. Thats fine too. Different strokes...

+Mr Maws You are correct T2 is like Arnold's "the Searchers" or his "The Outlaw Josey wales/Good, Bad, Ugly". It's probably his pinnacle film in his most iconic role and he nails it. Robert Patrick does a fantastic job pulling off the cold silent T1000 and coming off as a believable threat to Arnold's Terminator. The truth is T1 is honestly kinda of more a romance with some thriller elements to it.

MarcBrewer The thing is that James Cameron crafted this superb and perfect work of art out of many different ideas. Some initial concepts were admittedly used from Harlan Ellison, but those were merely conceptual groundworks. EVERY film/story is like this in that everything is borrowed from something else. The problem with James Cameron and Terminator is that he foolishly admitted to using a couple of Harlan Ellison stories to build upon. Word got back to Ellison and he sued to have his name attached. But James Cameron used those many ideas and created an original work of art that is perfectly crafted. Every original idea is a unique combination of other ideas.

Too many younger people (20’s) think T2 is greater. But T2 had terrible acting across the board, terrible script and so many plot-holes to count. Terminator was amazing.

Mr. Landis, You state that you are a screenwriter. If that is so, your vocabulary must be above average, correct? In that case, sir, may I suggest that you use adjectives that do not start with "F" in every sentence. You embarrass yourself and your audience.
