Ooh so excited I just direct sowed some zinnias in salmon, coral and pink! I direct sowed last year and had blooms till fall. I also direct sowed some straw flower for the first time. We shall see how they do. I had 12 pink glads I planted in four groups of 3 each which will add some height and color in front of my sunflowers which have all sprouted in the garden! So excited to see your blooms this year!!!! I look for your videos every day!

Oh, by the way, there is another flower called 'hairy balls'. Its in the allium family, and I think they are so pretty and quirky. Look them up ! I'm going to try them next year.

You're amazing! You do so much and know so much! Just an expanded reason for your viewers for planting tomatoes super deep. The indeterminate varieties are actually vines - so every leaf node has potential to put out roots, and when you have well-rooted tall "seedlings" like that, it is beneficial to bury them deep to encourage a much larger root system, therefore stronger and healthier :)

Well Nicole you have succeeded in giving me the fever to start a flower farm. I binged watched your videos all winter. You may not remember, but I had messaged you a while back regarding netting for my dahlias which you did reply back with an answer, thank you. I told you then I was thinking about trying to flower farm. I am definitely on a much smaller scale than you are but if all goes well this year, I will expand next year, Lord's willing. I am in north central Arkansas and do not know of any flower farms in our state although there may be some. Your plants look great. Mine look pretty good but we are having so much rain plus our temps have been colder than usual so it has been hard to get things planted. I am doing lilies, glads, sunflowers, zinnias, snapdragons, and at least 15 to 20 kinds of filler flowers. Not sure if my Dahlias will be for sale. I have around 200 of mixed varieties. You are a great inspiration and I have learned much from watching your videos as well as being entertained by you. Wishing you a very successful year of flower farming.

Your orange gomphrena had great germination compared to mine, I soaked the Baker creek seeds and used heat mats and sifted seed starting mix. 3 germinated, now I only have 1 plant that is growing.

The local small nursery had 298 tomato plants last year and sold out fast. I started Ox Heart tomatoes from seed mid January 2021. Put them in the ground three weeks ago. Zone 7b. Am trying dahlias from seed. They are picking up as it gets warmer. They got planted out a few weeks ago as well.

I can't tell you how helpful your seedling updates are, they provide me with a great benchmark on how my own seedlings are doing. I planted 24 Dahlia seeds from Floret...have 15 plants in 4" pots ready to be planted...in my very small garden, the only question is where? It's kinda a crap shoot, because I don't know what they are, how tall, what color...but will be a fun surprise. Everything looks amazing...can't wait for the outside tour.

I just wanted to thank you for your channel/videos. While I'm not planting large-scale, just personal garden around the house..thanks to you, I have successfully planted my dahlia, canna, and gladiolus bulbs!! I have unsuccessful planted these in the past! Also, was able to plant some roseform begonias, which are new to me, in a part of my garden that stays shaded 3/4 of the day! I enjoy your videos so much! I forget you have other jobs besides farming. Gurl, you are one busy lady. I read an article last night that said flowers will be hard to come by this year, especially for weddings. Um, they don't know about you and your other flower friends. What shortage? Seeing your success growing from seeds makes me think I could do this. Not farming, but just to have enough for a small cutting garden for my own use. But how does one decide what to plant. You have acreage that you don't have to be selective. I am starting lilies from bulbs (corms?) and that's fun seeing them develop. So much more affordable than purchasing one plant from garden centers. Sleeping among the peonies sounds so delightful. My peonies are looking awesome this year. I haven't even gotten around to fertilizing some of them yet. I'm also in zone 4b and was weeding over the weekend. Some ladies passing by on a dog walk stopped to compliment my gardens (Oy! Don't look at the mess to the right) and they thought it was too early to garden. Really?! I feel I'm far behind because I watch gardeners from warmer zones. Gotta get those weeds before they take over. I love the uniqueness of amaranth, but worry it would self-seed everywhere like the weed version I get in my garden. Sorry to take up your time with such a lengthy comment. It's already been established, you are BUSY!

Wow, what great results. I think I need to fertilize my starts after seeing yours. I am also going to return to using soil blocks again. Harry Balls is a really good milk weed plant that attracts Monarch butterflies. Careful, it self seeds like crazy if you left the “balls” open up. It also gets 5-6 feet tall.

Oh my God everything looks amazing Nicole! This video is absolutely convinced me that I need to go to soil blocking. Everything that I have started under lights is tall and spindly and just is not happy. The only thing that looks really great on my foxglove seedlings right now. I’m so happy that you showed your Dara as I’m trying to grow Orlaya and was so concerned out strappy they were looking. I have a feeling I’ll be living vicariously through you as we move into the peak of our growing season. Not giving myself too much trouble as this is my first year trying from home. Been growing those blue centered African daisies. They are really leggy and tall but so pretty! I also left them in the plug trays too long. I love them! Got the seeds from Baker Creek too. Please give us an update on the gomphrena when you harvest. I'm planning to plant them next spring and want to see how big and flowy they get. (small yard space ) Thanks! Your plants looks great and love your presentation! I see plenty of potting up and transplanting in your near future. Some of the seeds I bought are growing odd plants. I purchased Basket of Gold Alyssum seeds and what is growing is Nightshade! Also my Corona Snapdragon mix seeds all germinated but they are definitely not snapdragons (many tall stems with umbrellas of pointed starburst leaves). Even Plantfinder can't identify! Oh well, hope they will be a nice surprise.

Girl I had given up on my buplereurum because for 3 weeks nothing! I finally took the tray off my shelf and shunned her to darkness. 2 weeks later I go to move it out and what!?!? I had some germination. Very leggy germination but germination. Agreed my snaps germinate great! Watching these videos are so hard. You make me want to go buy more seeds when I'm already running out of room on my farm! I had to find space for 250 Lilies that came in I forgot I had ordered. 😅

I feel like a starving woman at a buffet looking at all your plants. Definitely will grow those poppies next year. I've got Oriental ones that I grew from seed last year and they are looking fantastic. I'm glad you got the 'matoes sorted and they have recovered. I put basil seedlings into either 4 inch by 6 inch deep square pots or a 32 plug tray. The ones in the 32 were NOT happy. They are now in Solo cups. Don't know what the deal is with the 4 inch deep plug trays. I think I need to invest in a soil blocker. My tomatoes are also out of control and it's not time yet.....the horror! I have an important question: Do you get Squash Vine Borers? I'm in Toronto and they descended on us for the first time last year and they are brutal. If you get them what do you do about them? I'm growing parthenocarpic cucumbers because they don't need pollinating and I'll keep them under netting to keep the Cucumber beetles, Squash bugs, and Vine Borers off them. Cucumbers have many enemies! Another less important question: I planted a block of Snappies 4 inches apart. The ones inside the square are standing up. The outer ones are sprawling. What should I do? I was thinking of putting in a bunch more and maybe the sprawly fellas will rethink their orientation. Should I pinch them short and maybe they'll grow upwards? Sorry for many questions.

Watch out for morning glory! It runs wild here in Idaho and you can’t EVER get rid of it. It chokes out plants and steals nutrients. It is pretty and it’s a great ground cover just be careful!

We do have a wild morning glory that has the same issues here. This cultivar is a bit different. I’ve grown it for years without it coming back- the wild one however pops up everywhere!

Hi Nicole. Jodie here from NJ (zone 7b). Love your videos and humor!! I'm starting 4 new seeds this year that need light for germination. Here's my problem: everything is set up in the basement where there is minimal daylight. :( I suppose I can place them under grow lights - maybe a foot or so below; or I can put them upstairs close to an East-facing window, but without heat mats. What would you do? Any suggestions are welcome!!

The price for LED grow light strips are comparable to the daylight shop lights. Both types work for growing seedlings 🌱

I'm glad your morning glory are doing good! Did you like the type of peas I sent? I wasn't sure if those were the kind you liked eating fresh or not. I think the Cinnamon Basil has a black licorice hint to it, but better... I dont like black licorice but I LOVE the smell of that Basil. I have 4 beautiful Lemon Scented Gum Eucalyptus. They're almost a foot tall, but three are doing more bushing than vertical growth. I had 4 Baby Blue Eucalyptus doing good, & then all of 3 sudden them, their leaves started to get crispy & they died! 🤷‍♀️ I have no clue what happened! I had that bumpy bubble stuff on my tomatoes! Were super humid in southern Indiana so that's so nice to know! Never heard of that before! I thought it was mosaic virus because of that, & curly leaves... ( which it still may have been, but in some they only had the bubbling) I am sooooo doing soil blocks next year! Jist the simple fact of not having to pull the seedlings out of trays I think is going to be a huge benefit! It takes me forever to pop them out (depending on cell size) unless I let them dry out, & sometimes I water because I don't think n I'm going to be able to plant that day, then my 2 year old takes a 2 hour nap & in like "let's plant" & then I get 6 things planted from trying not to rip the roots! 😩 🤣

If you glob a bunch of spit...yes, I said spit as in saliva, on those seed husks that are stuck, it usually works to loosen them. They said you can use water but that the enzymes in saliva work faster. If the husk doesn't come off fast enough, you lose the plant. I hate to lose plants😤

Oh I have one of those thickly sown snapdragon trays too. I had bought the most beautiful fuchsia colored ones, in a tray of about 6 plants, and saved the seeds. I don't know what they were called. So now how do I get them into the ground or pots? Just break them into little clumps or should I try to separate them individually first?

I had really bad germination with my strawflower also, & mine are brand new seeds.

I don't know how many you start, but I usually start suspect seeds between layers of wet toilet paper in a plastic lock 'n lock box on top of the lights for warmth. That way I can keep track of germination rate. Sometimes I noticed seeds may not come through the seed starting medium but from the same packet they germinate well with toilet paper. I use that because if the roots climb in the toilet paper is friable roots don't get injured. Recently I got the pelleted lettuce seeds from Johnny's. Pathetic germination in soil so I put nine pellets into wet toilet paper and in record time all nine germinated. Hm. I don't know what to think because I followed instructions to a 't'. And I'm sure farmers aren't starting their pelleted seeds on toilet paper........ I need to consult someone who grows these regularly as to what I'm doing wrong.

@@ElderandOakFarm The first batch had very moist medium and the trays were covered in a clear plastic bag. It was Promix. I followed instructions to a T. Even took the soil temperature. The ones I put between toilet paper hatched 100% and they are growing nicely in the same plugs as where the other seeds didn't hatch. Go figure. In future I am just going with non-pelleted seeds. Just I wanted to try Salanova lettuce since everyone raves about it. And all the varieties are pelleted seeds and $$$. Or if I do it again, I'll just start them with wet toilet paper and transplant after they hatch.

I’d love to see you repot a tray that has 88/90 germination. I have no idea how you can take them apart. Please. I always plant seeds too thick.

Most things I grow are in individual soil blocks so the roots are contained to each small cell. I plant them straight into the ground from the block.

Honestly, your straw flowers are my gazania failures. I can literally never get any of them to germinate. I have 3 that came up from 2 packs... working on doing some cold stratification to get my last pack to maybe have a better germination rate. Gazania do really well in my super hot climate, although they tend to only bloom in the winter... but since we *usually* don't freeze here in Houston - this last winter being an exception - I can keep them outside all year round no problemo.
