@TGSuineg2 жыл бұрын
@hart a lot of the new features in 2023 were already added to 2022.1 and .2 patches, like the deformers and animation caching. You can check this on their patch notes. I was actually confused whether they meant that there were further improvements or if they just pretended like it's new. I think the only things that are actually new are the blue pencil, retopology improvements (apparently they collaborated with the 3dsmax team for that yet it still guves worse results than 3ds), boolean layers, and random fixes. Honestly, this feels like 2022.4 than 2023. It would also make more sense for the current year. P.S. also Arnold 7 seems to give worse results when denoising using Optix than 6 (and is slower). I made a post on the Arnold renderer forums and the devs seemed dumbfounded. Their solution was to basically use Intel's Oidn denoiser instead.
@hartgameart2 жыл бұрын
@@TGSuineg I agree seeing that a lot of the updates were just incremental 2022 updates makes this feel like another 2022 patch rather than a new version. That sucks to hear about the arnold issues hopefully that can be addressed.

Im a student, or rather as of today, Im not a student since I just graduated my country’s equivilence of high school, but that is beside the point. I have been using maya for like a year, I think maya could be a great competitor for other programs. But it costs SOOO FUCKING MUCH. Even the ”light” or LT version of maya, costs too damn much. I know they mostly get their money from big studios that want a cohesive program. But as for me who want to continue using the full version of maya without having to pay absurd prices, it is a really big letdown. I have used Zbrush, Blender, 3DSP, 3DSD, and used Maya for a sort of intermedium program for my work. But honestly, 5k dollars for 3 years. That shit is beyond wack. Either they lower the prices, or they WILL get outcompeted without a doubt in the long run, since they are no longer a the equivilent of a monopoly.

3dcoat retopo tools are probably the best you can get. Especially if your high res comes from Zbrush, you have the abillity to import Zbrush polygroups which then can be uses to hide parts/groups, which helps tremendously with complex overlapping parts. The thing that pisses me off the most is their discrepancy in retopo tools with THEIR OTHER products - 3dsmax. They have imployed some amazing new bought retopo tools over the recent time, and I see absolutely no reason for them to withhold that for Maya.
@hartgameart2 жыл бұрын
It is sort of strange isn't it. Either way you're using an Autodesk product so I don't really know why they wouldn't try to bring the best tools they can to each software. Retopo in general is a funny one to me because the best retopo programs are from very small teams/companies. It's always surprised me the big dogs haven't really invested in more advanced retopo tools when it's still such an integral part of the pipeline at least on the game art side.

The problem with Autodesk and Maya is that Autodesk doesn't care about Maya at all. The most of their income is based on Autocad, inventor and other CAD and BIM software. it wouldn't come as a surprise that AD shuts down Maya development completely at some point in the next 3-5 years.

I know my perspective is a bit biased since I'm coming at from the angle of game character art but I know vfx and some other areas of CG still rely on it much more heavily than I do. I wonder if something like that did happen where a lot of those folks would end up transitioning to or if it's just a case where there is so many different smaller packages that are so good at specific areas cg artists just continue to hop from software to software.

MAYA's biggest flaw and weak point is its history. Coming from MAX, where history is not a thing, (the way it is in maya) maya crashes comparatively easy unless you are constantly deleting history. Its so frustrating. I believe that is the base cause why Booleans would crash maya in the past. It affects the entire program across almost every operation. Not that Max is perfect, but now that I've used both programs, if i could choose, max would be my pick...for modeling anyway

They bought Softimage just to kill... Under Alias, Maya made huge leaps with all versions, while being very stable. When it was acquired by Autodesk, many key developers left, and this was reflected in the instabilities that emerged, the odd decisions, and the lack of focus. A simple example of how out of touch they often were with the capabilities of their own software. A free retopo tool called FroRetopo was released. It easily beat Maya's retopo capabilities at the time, both in functionality and bug-free. The joke was that this tool used 100% native Maya functions. To do this, May retopo was often janky, or found the wrong surface, often unable to find a simple quad along the nearest vertexcies... Or there was the Viewcube, which worked perfectly in the old Maya, and then Atudesk came along and integrated the crappy Max version and killed the old one. The feedback was in vain that they gutted the most important functionality out of it and made it completely useless. They ignored it, and in the end they phased it out, saying nobody uses it.........
