‘Maya’ is one of the most prominent and important words in the vocabulary of Hindu philosophy. It is a very pivotal concept in Indian thought and has gathered recognition in the vocabulary of English language as well. Unfortunately, the word ‘maya’ is often mistranslated as ‘illusion’ by not only the western scholars but also the Indian gurus and pundits. Even when it is used by the western scholars without translation in their English writings, it generally denotes an illusion or a false idea. This mistranslation of maya as illusion has created a general misconception among people that Hindu philosophy is world-negating, pessimistic and unproductive. In this video Babaji and Rajiv throw light on how ‘maya’ is different from illusion and why it would be better if we stop translating maya as illusion.

The word Māya is formed from root word Mā, which means *"To Measure"* (ala Physics) Māya is a means of explaining universe that is perceived using our senses. The material universe cannot exist without Māya. Those who transcend the reality defined by the Māya are Liberated (Moksha).

I completely agree with everything that has been mentioned in this video, the Sanskrit word 'maya' does NOT mean 'illusion' in English. There are two 'realities' going on side by side in this world, the one that the masses think is 'real' (what I call 'Movie Screen Earth') because certain people tell them it's 'real' and the one that is actually 'real'. The one that is actually 'real' is SO UNBELIEVABLY DIFFERENT to the one that the masses think is 'real' that it would make your head spin. The sky is not blue, nothing is solid because atoms are made of empty space, everything is always moving (including the ground that you walk on) and nothing ever touches anything because an atom can never touch any other atom due to electrical forces repelling them. Your feet never touch the ground. Also, the picture I've just posted ( here: i.4pcdn.org/pol/1467963753359.png ) is NOT yellow - it's red and green. If they can trick you into thinking that red and green is yellow, think of the other ways that they can trick you. Your brain and your senses deceive you. Nothing is EVER as it seems and appearances are ALWAYS deceptive! We owe it to our innate intelligence to QUESTION EVERYTHING and that includes EVERYTHING that I tell you!

Swamiji seems to indicate the effect of Maaya is not real (even though the Maya itself is real). I agree with Maya being real, but do not agree with effects of Maya being not real. Subsequently at 8:16 he clarifies not "ultimately real". Yes, that is correct. The effect of Maya is not "ultimately" real, but never the less they are indeed real. This confusion stems from Advaita. They wrongly classify temporary (anitya) objects as unreal. In Shastra we have clear definition of satya/asatya and nitya/anitya. Advaita mixes up temporal aspect with existential aspect and cause all sorts of confusion. Hence Advaita is unvedic and fit to reject.

Deduction of meaning from component sounds lead to the logical conclusion. 👇 302 Atma's choice MAAYA or BRAHMA AATMA is self. The mental process of isolating self from what is not self The narrative "na-ithi" (not this may be treated as exceptionalism of the individual) literally helps the self to arrive (AA) from TA to further indivisible MA. AATMA is self isolated from MATHAM (the group of MAs with the same opinion about TA). Isolated from its surroundings. Self as a part of the group addresses self's group as "hum", "hamara" in Indian languages ( English home!). For isolating from the group, self addresses itself "I'm" and in India we use "aham". Aham highlights the na-ithi thought process for isolation. The self (aham) has choice. Two options for ATMA on how to deal with MA (the thought pattern, the boundary, the psyche of the self), are 1)MAAYA way and 2) BRAHMA way. Individual has to choose from these. If the choice is to continue in the comfort zone for maintaining the status quo, the choice is for reinforcing MA, the Chittha Vrutthi, the thought pattern, the interactive pattern. Reinforcing MA and advancing selfishly is termed1)MAAYA, the first option of the self. For improving interaction with the environment, neighbour, self needs to move beyond MA. The self's resolve to step beyond the status quo in civility as well as scientific temper is termed as 2)BRAHMA. The readiness to correct perceptions like a child is termed as "being dvijaatha", "being born again", "Chida Nanda Roopah". The strong decision to mutate from the attitude of selfishness, MAAYA to the attitude of civility and scientific temper of a child, "BRAHMA". Mentally newborn, Chida Nanda Roopah, BRAHMA. Repented, born again, dvijaatha, Chida Nanda Roopah, new entity is BRAHMA. Repented to abandon the attitude paapa of MAAYA in order to love the little neighbour is the idea of BRAHMA. Paapa (=PA+APA / the activity of otherising one's own/),Indian word for sin. Repentance is taking a U turn from the attitude of otherising (paraayavatkaran) to the attitude of inclusion(Advaita, love). Repentance (and the consequent Chida Nanda Roopah) is the only revolution that is in the control of the self. When MA, the bias to self is eliminated, SA, the inner self engages (RANA, repeatedly engage) in SARANA of interaction with TA, the environment in a childlike way, approaching SATH. Buddham SARANAM gachami.. Dharmam SARANAM gachami… Samgham SARANAM gachami…. The gachami (progress) requires Saranam, self's (Aatma) effort in buddham (elevate notion of the environment) which leads to samgham (YOGA of SA and TA leading to SATH). MA struggles for excellence of the self neglecting the little neighbour, which in fact is RANA of MA, the equivalent of maranam, the death. Worse than maintaining the status quo, maranam (the perpetuation of MA) is regression and decadence. To attain moksha, SA neglecting MA and jumping across (brah) in love of TA is suggested. Verbally acceptable simple deduction of brahma is often misinterpreted (as the Creator) due to lack of willingness to love the little neighbour. Alternatively the name of the Creator, BRAHMA is equated to AATMA. Illogical identification ( limited MA claiming to be the Omni MA ) goes from eternity to eternity (misinterpreting the usage SANATANA). Self willingly accepts illogical interpretation neglecting the simple interpretation of brahma. "Loving the neighbour as oneself" is an unacceptable proposition and any interpretation however illogical it may, would certainly, be accepted as unquestionable truth. In place of the little neighbour the word, word is interpreted as the Almighty Creator God. The moment of conscious, solemn decision making "AUM namah Shivay" is the moment of being dwijaatha. Then on Chida Nanda Roopah, mentally child like. The dvijaatha claims Sivoham. Aham Siva. I am civility incarnate. Prior to the mutative decision I was MA, living on the impulses of MAAYA, reinforcement, enhancement of MA, my Chittha Vrutthi. MA, (my Chittha Vrutthi , my interactive pattern, my boundary, my comfort zone, my methods, my memory, awareness..) limits everyone. MA is bondage. Decision to BRAH ( jump across) MA (one's own boundary) is the idea of "Brahma". To love TA, the little neighbour SA, the self jumps across MA. This decision to jump across the safety line MA is the decision of being dwijaatha. On the mutative decision one declares "Aham Brahma Asmi" It's a declaration of love and scientific temper… Decision to abandon MAAYA trait and to embrace BRAHMA trait is being dvijaatha, the threshold of the Kingdom of Heaven, "new Earth and New Heaven".

Mind/Intelligence/Senses/Ego - PURUSH (Shukshma Sharir) utilizing 03 (sato- rajo-tamo) Cosmic Gunas, Construct MAYA. Maya is always REAL and Individualistic. Rajiv ji! Please explain why do we call our Indian constitution, 'Samvidhaan' in hindi, when clearly its not the same vidhaan or law/rule for all citizens? The majority of so called hindus has been suffering since centuries. The indian constitution is biased and favours the gunda elements of the society, be it minorities or the case of the Aarakshan. The biggest lie that was served to the people of India was and is that its Secular, whereas India is totally obligated somehow to appease the so called minorities and pleasing its international masters. Again is the word 'constitution' equivalent to the word 'Samvidhaan'? If not, then what could be the right word to describe such a law system that totally favours the powerful and was created by the Britishers to help themselves in looting India and its people?

Maya in Advaita and Maya in Dwaita mean two different things. Rajiv, don't you think by pushing one specific view point (dwaita in this case) as against another view (Advaita), you are going against your cherished goal of uniting India? Advaita and Dwaita have been two prominent thought systems prevalent even to this day at least in the scholarly circles. Your recent videos with Dr. Das makes me feel that you are pushing Dwaita as the only and right view. I am not a supporter of either of the two views but it is injustice to many great philosophers of India such as Sankara, Gaudapada to set aside their contributions or even question them without understanding. It is a highly technical subject that can't be dismissed so easily.

To alleviate Rajiv's concern that "..mistranslation of maya as illusion has created a general misconception among people that Hindu philosophy is world-negating, pessimistic and unproductive.", let me say this - In his Brahmasutra commentary, Sankara has made it very clear as to what he means by illusion - "illusion does not mean that world does not exist, but what you think as that what exists is not what it is. It is the Brahman itself that is appearing as the world. So it is a matter of wrong perception". Sankara uses this argument to pull down his Vijnyanavadi and Shoonyavadi Buddhist opponents who have a negative perspective on illusion. When the rope is mistook for a snake, it does not mean that rope does not exist. It is just wrongly perceived as snake. So, there is no cause to interpret it as world negating. Seeing Brahman in everything isn't it world unifying? I am sure Dr. Das too agrees.

No... Not at All. Dhan that is the one Valuable... like Vidhya Dhan ( Knowledge is Wealth), Gow Dhan ( Cow as Wealth) Similar Buffalo, Sheeps, Goats, Elephant, Horses. Bhu Dhan (Land as Wealth) Mountain, Rivers, Forests, Animals and Birds. Most Rich People has and a Few with No Money Like AdiVasi Tribals. Agricultural Land in Villages is Also for Family and Cattle as Said Earlier. House in Ancestral Village or City Business like have Great Land or Services having Shops. This is Dhan along side Valuables like Gold, silver and Gem's and Jewellery. India Invests in Land and Jewellery. Agriculture and Dairy. Business and Service. That's Dhan...

So we have Maya and Reality both within us. if maya is from reality (Bhagwan) then it's good. He said people THINK maya is the reality, THINKING is also a maya means its not true that thinking about maya or THINKING is root to Reality. I think Consciousness is the opposite of Matter/Energy I Think the whole universe is a thought, thats why universe is Infinite like thought, there is no reality to it, thought doesn't has a shape its nothingness. So Consciousness is nothingness, u became nothingness or the infinity universe and thats the reality and u seeking towards that... 0= U escape from thought become a thought. Thats the Reality(Bhagwan)

Explanation on Maya in this video is not quite correct. The two aspects discussed by Swamiji is rooted in Advaitic doctrine. The actual definition of mAya given in Shastra is "mAyeti bhagavatpraj~nA saiva mAna-trANa-kartrI yasya tan.h mAyAmAtram.h", the operative part being, of course, `mAyeti bhagavat.h praj~nA' -- mAyA is the Consciousness/Will of the Supreme Being.

Māya never creates "Illusion." Pls read the Sañkara bhashyas. Māya is Brahman's power/strength. The Illusionary experience, if at all, that happens in the Jīva, is bcos of Jīva's avidya》Adhyāsa. To cover one blunder, few people use the jargon "Āvaraņa Şakti" etc....
