I bought a '20 Grand Touring Reserve in dark blue. Love it. My infotainment doesn't bother me - start up the playlist and forget about it. No touchscreen while rolling is for safety. The turbo doesn't bother me either - lol. Plus, the turbo models have NO cylinder deactivation. The interior lighting is a bit skimpy but not a deal breaker. Your right foot controls the fuel economy. My best is 31.3 on the highway. Ceramic coating supposedly toughens up the paint and not following too close in traffic for the nose dings. Great video by the way.

I bought Mazda CX5 2017 yesterday. Used one, 21K miles, preserved. Like a new, to be honest. I found it very dynamic to drive, even with this 2.0L engine, but mine is with manual transmission, which was exactly what I wanted. My version is equipped with Head-up display, android/carplay as well. Multimedia is really nice, I don't want a bigger screen. With Carplay - its enough for this size for me. It is really responsive, not slow, even with the sat nav. I don't have such "loading" to wait for something. I am so happy with this car. It is just so fun to drive, I love it!
@Mussie693 жыл бұрын
You are spot on with your review ! I purchased the 2021 Mazda CX-5 exactly like your vehilce and I have the same issues. Paint and gas consumption. ( I flill up 2x a week) I have at least 12 scratches on my vehicle and 2 flat tires in 12 months of ownership. I would like to add to the list of dislikes: Rock hard seats, the easily scratchable piano black covering around the gear shift, lack of wireless charging, and actual tire pressure reading. Not just tire is low. I like the bigger screen, but no touch sceen is disappointing. I even added the glass coating of the vehicle at the time of purchase, it didn't help much with such thin paint. Overall thought, I still love the car and I'm happy I own it. I love the color, the quickness, the amazing Bose system, and remote start and many other things about it. Keep up the good work !

Education on Mazda’s advanced BSM system: The blind spot monitor will activate as long as you’re going over 6mph, and will trigger in a given zone. That zone is: from your rear view mirror, to the width of 1 lane away from the car, to 15 feet behind the car. Imagine a rectangle on either side of your car in that zone. Anytime a car occupies any part of that rectangle AND you’re going over 6 mph BSM will trigger The ADVANCED part of BSM is that if a car is approaching you from the rear AND they’re going more than 10mph faster than you are going, BSM will activate from 1/4 of a mile back. That’s if there’s more than a 10 mph differential between you. The idea being they’re coming up so quickly you get the warning earlier because they won’t have time to slow down if you merge in front of them (because they’re going so much faster than you)
@macker00773 жыл бұрын
@ mattus I find the BSM way too sensitive, especially after you have passed someone and want to change lanes....it still goes off!!
@mattusapparatus59683 жыл бұрын
@@macker0077 I get it, but it’s job is to activate when your blind spot is occupied. I don’t find the chirp to be particularly intrusive, it only beeps once and with the radio at a moderate volume I can barely hear it. You can turn the audible warning off and just keep the visual in the settings menu, but it’s not so imperfect that I’d sacrifice the feature. It’s invaluable in traffic for me personally, I’ll never buy another car without it
@macker00773 жыл бұрын
@@mattusapparatus5968 Problem is, the distance of what Mazda feels is appropriate to safely change lanes. When I'm passing and have 2 car lengths between the car I"ve passed, and the rear of my car, I think that's more then adequate to signal and return to the lane. The alarm also interrupts your turn signal...at least in the cabin, I'm not sure whether it still operates from the rear of the car? I assume it still blinks outside the car. I'm likely going to turn the audible off. In comparison, my 2013 Lincoln simply alerts me in the mirror when there's someone in my blindspot. More then sufficient IMO if you are driving as you should....and checking your blindspot visually as you go to change lanes.
@mattusapparatus59683 жыл бұрын
@@macker0077 so that’s precisely what you’ll have when you switch to visual only, simple adjustment. The reason they chose 15ft is even though you’re clear of the other car, it’s what they deemed an adequate distance so the other driver won’t think you’re cutting them off and spark a road rage incident. You can customize every aspect of those alerts down to controlling how loud the ticking is from your turn signals and how they flash, if you haven’t dug into your settings that far you should

Big Rock, that aggressive driving probably didn't help the fuel mileage😊😊 Your reviews are excellent. I bought a CX5 GT with some package that made it pretty much a Reserve in September '21 and had it delivered to my house. I bought this one because they had it. I had never driven a Mazda before. I did drive Foresters, Rav4, Rogue, some sort of Kia as rentals and test drove an X3. For 15k less than an X3, this is a deal. Mine has the HUD, cooled seats, adaptive cruise (my number 1 requirement on a new car which is really hard to find on a BMW), adaptive lights which sound useless until you drive on mountain roads, pretty much every gadget you need or didn't know you needed. After a few weeks, that infotainment system is fine. I can pretty much find my way around without taking my eyes off the road to look at and touch a screen. Frankly, I haven't been enamored with any of those systems and like that the HVAC and audio volume are knobs. This car is fun to drive. I like it better than the X3 because visibility is better and it isn't quite as twichy. Oh, and it is 15k cheaper. One thing you didn't mention is that this 2.5 engine has a timing chain rather than a belt which could potentially save you a 1000 bucks every few years. Another thing is the turbo version (mine isn't) can use premium fuel to boost horsepower or regular fuel for a little less which is great compared to the premium cars which all require premium fuel. My other main vehicle is a Suburban which is a beast on the open highway but the Mazda is a beast on narrow mountain roads. I'm going back to watch your first review again to see the tires you chose. The lower profile 19" Toyos on mine are quiet on concrete roads here in Arkansas but somewhat noisy on the course pavement in East Tennessee. I am concerned about snow traction. Great job. I am looking for your '21 review. Hope you like it.

Re the CX-5 having a 'timing chain', OTOH, I read some had issues with it stretching and hence needing to be replaced? Not sure how much mileage though.

The infotainment screen in our 2015 CX5 2LT is actually set into the dash and is twice as big as yours. It is also interactive (touch screen) while driving. Navigation was an extra option when we purchased ours and we didn't bother getting it. We just use our phones for navigation. We do use the screen for phone calls regularly and ofcourse music. We're in Australia, so the model may have been a bit different than for the US. I also commented on your previous review video. Our daughter has a Mazda 3 and it has the smaller top mounted screen like yours. We are long time Mazda lovers and I drove a Mazda 323 hatchback which we traded into the CX5 and up til a year or two ago my husband drove a little runaround 1995 Mazda 121! Cutest little car with loads of room. Finally gave up when some of the bolts rusted out in the chassis, because we live 50 MTRS from the ocean!

I’ve done 40,000 kilometres in my 2021 CX5 turbo. The one (many) things I love about my car is how engaging the engine is. The low down torque is excellent. This coupled with the old fashioned conventional six speed transmission, perfect. I owned a RAV 4 hybrid for six months and the whine from the CVT was awful.

I have been looking for some years now to get an SUV (been involved some years ago in a motorcycle accident and my legs simply love the more 'elevated' position. I have just found a second hand 4WD (2018 build, 28.500 km's, I am from Belgium, so not so familiar with mileage :-)) and it rides great (2.5 engine, automatic gear box, full option). It was a difficult decision because my other car is a Lexus 2.0 IS from... 2005. Nothing compares to that car when it comes to reliability, simply... the best. Been driving the Mazda for two weeks now and it handles super. Must add here that your review pulled me over the line (doubted between CX5, CR-V, RAV-4 and Lexus NX300h) and looking back it feels like the right choice, the car looks and drive great. Al so the interior is top! Did experienced a problem with the automatic folding of one mirror, looked it up, used some W40 spray on the mechanism and it's working great now. You do a top job in your reviews, keep up the good work!

Excellent demo of driving the CX5. I say "loved" because I traded it in recently for a CX-50 Turbo....same color! The dealer gave me a great trade in amount and the CX50 has more space and power and is technically superior. The gas mileage is way worse, however, w my aggressive driving style. The reason Mazda says their dial for the screen keeps you focused on the road, is because you do what they expect you to do - you don't use it when driving! Ergo, much safer! Not convenient, however. We are about to look at the Mazda CX-5, Honda SRV, and Toyota Rav4. Perhaps also the Toyota Corolla Cross AWD and Toyota Camry AWD. We also live in the mountains of CT with snow covered roads at time to get home, snow tires and AWD are a must. That screen may make us skip the Mazda but we will give it a chance. The turbo does not work well with the six speed because the gearing is not great for the turbo. So we will only look at the engine you have. Appreciate your review of the car over a few years as that is appreciated.

I have a 2018 GT with the premium package and I love it! I did lower it 2" with CorkSport lowering springs to decrease the body roll and the wheel gap, and upgraded to a set of Pirelli P245/45-R20's instead of the standard P225/55-R19's. Its improved the handling considerably and now it glides like you're on rails - I think Mazda should have made it this way to begin with. I find myself using the SPORT mode often so I have a little bit more giddy up, because sometimes it does feel a little gutless. If it had a turbo option in 2018 I certainly would have purchased it. One other issue is with every GPS map update, the directions are less and less reliable - Since when do you enter the freeway through a fast food restaurant drive through?? I can't trust the gps anymore, so I plan to look into the Android auto. Other than that, I'm completely satisfied, I've never had a problem with it except for a couple of recalls, and I highly recommend the CX5.

Good work. I have the same model / year and I'm very happy. Personally I love the control system they came up with for the car, I don't navigate using the onboard navigation because frankly Waze is way better and easier so for me the screen is only used to call people from my contacts list and change stations, tasks I can easily and quickly do with a few turns of the big dial on the console. For me that's perfect.

I love the center control knob and location of radio on/off volume. Bought a Highlander hybrid this spring and don't particularly like reaching across that big 10 in screen. The Highlander is terrible for scrolling to a Podcast location. Love the blind spot monitor, perfect. The Highlander doesn't beep, just the mirror flashing light. Unless you look at mirror in a timely manner you might miss the warning. My 2018 red paint is chipping too, but not too badly. I don't drive aggressively, don't drive interstate and rarely go into towns/cities, this makes my overall milage 34 mpg. I love how it handles. But I'm pretty darn impressed with my Highlander handling too. I keep test driving RAV4's, they are terrible handling vehicles. I guess I'm spoiled with my Mazda. Also in internal appearance of the RAV4 looks cheap in comparison. I would like to buy a Rav4 Prime or hybrid, but I can't stand how it handles and the cheap interior. The Venza hybrid seems a much better choice. I might get one of those when I get ready to trade my Mazda. But I hear Mazda might get a hybrid with Toyota hybrid drive.

Really appreciate your last review and this one. My partner and I are looking to do a lease takeover and we are deadlocked between a cx-5 and a CRV. The turbo CRV is quick feeling but the driving of the cx5 just felt fun. We're up here in Canada so thinking of the AWD as well for winter driving. There's no question there was a lot more storage and room in the CRV, but there's also just the two of us so I'm not sure if we need all of that storage. Decisions, decisions...

The blind spot monitoring when changing lanes can be annoying. I'm considering turning it off. Low end power lacks a bit too, but this is only 2.5L engine, so need to keep that in mind (I can just turn to my 2013 Mustang Boss 302 when I want to feel real power 😃). Beside this I have more powerfull Octavia with mover 1.4 turbo engine. I had decided to switch to the SUV and have choosen a CX-5. For the moment since april there is a new second revision of Mazda CX-5 M Hybriid e-SkyActive-G. According to some reviews they improve gear software (thanks EU for WLTP :( ) CarPlay is finally remote, no wire needed. In Poland we have some different names for trim. I wanna buy SportsLine - it is similar to Signature in US. In Poland Mazda has bad reputation in case of corosion. I hope this model is lack of this issue. I picked up JetBlack color, but I don't know yet which color is more resistant for scratches and visibility of it - black or machine grey.

I loved the look of the red color but hearing about how thin it is makes me want to go with another color like the blue if/when I get a cx5. How is your paint doing? Any bubbles/rust in door frames, hood or roof? Have you treated it with antirust? Thanks!

question to you guys I have 2021 model. 2.5 awd and while driving at low speed in a city, I'm often can hear a slight bump in a transmission. Dealer told me that it's ok, and that's how the transmission works when car's computer desn't know if I will be accelerating or pressing the break pedal. For me it feels odd and kinda annoying. Resetting the computer settings for a transmission didn't helped :(

Thank for a great review of this SUV. I have watched both of your videos. Im wanting to buy a 2012 Mazda CX-5 4cyl 2.0 L petrol KE series auto model. Would you recommend it? Or should I get the 2013 Hyundai ix35 Highlander Auto AWD? I’m wanting to keep it for at least 10 yrs.

$399. It’s not just a software update, the USB/nav box gets replaced and new cables ran from it to the radio CMU, and that’s before the software. It’s hardware and labor. You can buy the hardware for $199 at the dealer and it’s pretty easy to install if you’re mechanically inclined, endless how to videos here

Love both reviews videos. I’m looking at a 2019 Grand Touring AWD with the GT package with 14,000 miles for $29,500. Other option is a 2018 Grand Touring FWD with 28,000 miles for $26,500. I’m leaning much more heavily towards the 2019 since it has a lot less miles, plus has some better luxury features (Apple CarPlay, ventilated seats, etc). What would you go with?

Excellent content. We are close to buying a new CX 5. The Hybrid Rav4’s economy is tempting, but it feels like the Mazda is the best in its class everywhere else. Do you think the machine gray will be as difficult to maintain as the red?
@BigRockOutdoors13 жыл бұрын
probably not as bad
@mattusapparatus59683 жыл бұрын
Machine gray is pretty easy to maintain, and you can actually touch it up and not have it stick out like a sore thumb, unlike the red (double head 2 stage touch up pen)

I had 2014 Buick Encore with 66k miles on it when the engine started to fail. Currently debating what to buy I DO NOT want to go through the same issue again. I’m stuck between a Honda CRV and the Mazda cx 5.

i just decided to go with a mazda cx-5 kuro edition ( canada) . i was just about to sign some papers for the crv when i was researching common issues, oil dilution and battery drainage seem to be big ( especially in colder climates). Ended up on a forum for crv owners and found alot of the complaints of oil dilution, people having to do oil changes every 3k and so on. class action lawsuit in 2020 aswell

The issue of the soul red paint is well known, I have been worried about it. But I see your cx5 is in a good shape after 3-4 years, so I guess it is not that bad?
@gogoloza2 жыл бұрын
Hello Big Rock, Question do you get like a plastic rumbling noise on your cx5 2-4k RPM ? I feel like its coming from the engine cover. I also have a 2017 Grand Touring and noticed it started doing that. I have 30k miles on it.

Since you keep complaining about infotainment, I'm surprised you haven't installed CarPlay; costs about $500 IIRC. I got it for free with my 2018 GT (wasn't available when I bought but they installed later) and works well with my iPhone. You can buy a kit and install yourself but looks to be a fair amount of work. Probably should mention that a common complaint is the front seats are quite firm when new. However, they do break in after a while and I find them comfortable now even on a long trip. Living in the mountains of Colorado, I'm pleased with power even passing going uphill on I-70 at 10,000+ feet with ski racks. But that's with two people in the car, might drag with four adults. After 13,000 miles, my average is 24.7 mpg. However, I live on a much steeper, twistier road than you and that kills around-town mileage. Out on the highway, it can exceed 30 mpg.

Hey, I’ve had my 2019 CX5 Touring for 3 years on a lease and it’s been nothing but a pleasure to drive! I’m considering if I should just purchase it at this point because I’ve only put 13k miles into it and the residual will be $17,250! What are your thoughts, take it or leave it?

Totally agree about the rubbish Mazda non-touch infotainment system. I think they were imitating the old German systems that all used rotary wheels, but the Germans abandoned this approach in favor of.... touch screens.

I love the turbo. Instant/seemless torque with no lag. It's great for quick onramp merges, passing uphill, etc. Mazda purposely designed the turbo for every day driving vs the upper end. I still average 26.5 MPG with the 2.5T. It also has a real tranny vs a rubber band CVT!! I agree the infotainment system is pretty primitive. I've had two CX-5's and neither one has ever been in the shop for repairs. The AWD is very capable in ice and snow. My complaints are the tiny 15 gallon gas tank and the back seat that won't lay flat when their seats are folded down. And when you do fold them down, the front seats must be moved forward.

I liked your review and looked for a later model review but couldn't find one. So I'll post my comments here. I purchased a 2020 CX5 GT Premium package (no turbo). I, like you, am impressed with the fit and finish, but also noted how easily the paint is chipped, even through the undercoat. They did add android auto to the infotainment system, but you will need to update your firmware in the system. The dealers are charging a lot to do this and you may need additional hardware. My gas mileage averages about 24, which is unacceptable in today's market. The thing I don't like about this vehicle is the electronics, which are about a generation behind it's competitors. They are buggy and unintuitive. Many of the dash lights aren't lit. The "lane correction" is useless. The climate control keeps the fan blowing too high when the car is at temperature. I could go on but you get the picture. Would I buy it again? No.

Want another opinion? The wife and I had bought a brand new 2017 cx 5 gs with the 2.5l inline 4 skyactive crap. It made it to 18,000mi or 30,000km when it lost 4 quarts of oil and piled up the engine. It wasn't driven that hard as I barely drove it. I liked the experience of driving it but didn't like the experience losing an engine at such a low mileage. Buyers beware, you may experience the same problem. Personally, I'll never buy another Mazda again in my life..
