I've tested all of the competitors to this all- new 3 and CX-30 in my country, and heard @Autogefühl 's views on those that have yet to launch as well, including those from the Germans, and the 3 and CX-30 (except the overdone side bottom plastics 😁) are still at the top. Unlikely to be beaten and will probably be the car that replaces my current powerful turbodiesel by the middle of next year, if not by the time the first facelift can come out for the CX-30 and hopefully they minimise the side plastics - the ladies all want SUVs, and we have no choice but to listen right? 😆 Especially if they are shared family cars.

So much better technology than the short-sighted downsizing of engines. Very nice presentation, good info. Thanks.
@AccuCat5 жыл бұрын
Wanted to add my own comments on what Thomas said - "be aware that it's new engine technology": Having owned Mazda's in the past and currently even (and following their story and news about them since the early 90s), they are one of the only few manufacturers I would trust in being a "guinea pig?"(more below) on for this. Not that I would need to get the X in my country, but if I were in one I mean where the X made sense on paper with all the strict rules, and high prices of fuel and tax or whatever - places where owning a 2.5 or even a diesel would be difficult. This engine is only for those places actually, and I salute Mazda for finding a workaround that doesn't involve a turbo, but still gives you the feeling and added power of a 2.5 from a 2 litre. The only thing I would check on before considering the X, would be if there were extra servicing costs in the long run. You can just head over to the service manager of a service centre to get that info usually. I don't think there would be much of a difference, and you must factor any added costs against the benefits of owning a more powerful vehicle with added torque - this can actually help lower fuel consumption in the hands of a skilled driver. "Guinea Pig", another reason to trust a more experienced and independent Mazda now (unlike in the past) on the X, is simply because they have already earned a reputation for reliability in many nations, and I don't think they would risk that now by releasing a engine or any major technology with even moderate levels of potential issues/problems. A lot of time and research, including real world testing has gone into this for sure. I could be wrong here and we could see small issues popping up (if a immediate recall fixes it, that's good), but I'm just saying that if I were forced to take a bet on this, I would bet on Mazda not screwing this Skyactiv-X engine up, and possibly even being successful with it. Let's check back in hmm... 5 to 10 years time here? KZbin should still be around right? 😅

I personally feel the 6 l/100km from the Mazda 3 is extremely impressive. A Toyota Auris from a few years back was about 6.5 l/100km with only 124hp. It’s craazy how far we have come in combustion engine.

Well, keep in mind this skyactive-x *is* actually a hybrid. Mazda put their mild hybrid system in.
@cepaposible5 жыл бұрын
It is crazy how late. Only when emission regulations pushed them to do it. Now it is too late as this technology will have a short life span thanks to electrification. And let's be real: 6 litres/100km is not enough to significantly improve air quality and reduce CO2.
@Gabztar975 жыл бұрын
cepaposible yeah I do agree that it’s kind of sad that it’s to late. If they put out this system 10 years earlier it would be a different story. But 6l/100km with 184hp is low. If you look at Volvo’s d4 engines with the same specs it actually consumes more. I hope Mazda will make a bigger hybrid sky active x engine. I mean more electric power but smaller combustion engine.

I have such an Auris Hybryd (136 hp) and in such conditions (I know this road, next to Iskar river) and speeds (up to 90 but mostly 50-60 km/h) it consumes 4.1-4.3 l/100km

Nice review autogefuhl team! I ve own an skyactivG hatch in soul red. The skyactiveX is only 950 more expensive the the G in my country, because of the co2 taxes. On the G you pay 5000 euro's tax, and on the X 2600. A big difference! Only for the road tax you will pay more for the X, because it's a heavyer car. The G is 1249 kilo's. If it was 1 kilo more I had to pay 1 class higher road tax. For my car I pay 143,00 euro's in 3 months. The weight of the X is 1295 kilo's. Only 46 more then the G. Roadtax for the X is 166 in my country. On yearly base only 92,00 euro's more.

In diesel engine, all fuel does not really ignite at the same moment. The combustion starts in the at the point where the fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber and then progresses outwards in parallel to the spread of the fuel spray. In this engine however, all fuel does ignite at practically the same time.

@klausbrinck21375 жыл бұрын
Ye, cause time is money, and as you said, they may truly need the extra money (time). On the other side, in Germany you have 3-4 cars on a crossroads-red-light at 3 o´clock in the morning, where no pedestrian or car has crossed the street for the last hour, and still the cars wait for 5mins, till it turns green, which is crazy... If one then leaves prematurely, the other 3 will also cross the red light, cause they aren´t any more in fear being the only one, and in fear that the other 3 will call the police... So, people are as rational as in Bulgaria, but less reckless, but also more frightened of their own fellow-citizens!!!

Hey Thomas, glad you got to visit my home country. Too bad it had to be Sofia. It's overcrowded and the roads are in worst conditions compared to other cities in Bulgaria. About the driving on red light, we have a saying here in Sofia "it was only light red, not really red" for cases where you have to cross illegally (some traffic lights have like 2 second green). That said, usually people don't cross on red light in Sofia. But instead they violate traffic law regularly in a lot of different ways. For example parking on crossroads or stopping on sidewalks or bike lanes or making a left turn from the right most lane. I've been to a lot of cities in Bulgaria and I dare say Sofia drivers are the "wildest", not to use a harsher word. Though there are a lot of civilized drivers in Sofia too. It's just the black sheep stick out more and leave a bad impression.

Speaking of jumping red lights, you should see drivers in India. They use an advanced technology called VLT - Virtual Lane Technology. It basically means that they drive wherever they want, with zero regard for lanes or even driving direction !!! ... they create a "virtual lane" wherever they feel like driving. And it's bidirectional - they will even go against the direction of traffic flow. Find me a more advanced driver technology.

Quite the opposite of Volkswagen, that seems to move towards hard plastics. Combined with generous standard equipment and this interesting new engine this is quite an attractive offer. I have a suggestion: When demonstrating rear-seat head room, make sure you move the head rest up and sit back like you would when riding back there if the car was moving. You tilted your neck forward to talk to the camera and didn't get a real feel for how much head room it has if you sit up straight back. I've seen the same in some other video reviews, too. Maybe there is less head room if you have your neck in a more neutral, natural seating position. This is what I fear to be the case with Mazda. They seem to not understand how to design rear seat space to accommodate tall passengers. Otherwise, you are my favorite car reviewer! Cheers from the USA!

@AccuCat5 жыл бұрын
@@Tigerex966 There is already a mild-hybrid version of the 3 and CX-30. A self-recharging full-hybrid (probably developed together with their Toyota partners) would be great, however I have a funny feeling that we will only see that (if it even comes out) from Mazda after they have made more EV models. Perhaps Mazda would skip or just have one or two hybrid models only, and move straight to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. China and many countries are have finally decided to embrace it fully. Having driven the Hyundai Nexo myself with its great range, and studied it's engineering and fuel source, I can see that it is the future of motoring outside of the cities, where short range EVs would still make more sense in most cities for the time being. Conventional, modern and clean petrol and diesel engines shouldn't be forgotten or demonised though, and be offered and continued to be developed alongside all these options.

I've been looking forward to this review, I have my mind set on a new Mazda 3 Hatchback Skyactiv-X in Soul Red with Manual transmission in "Dynamic" trim (2nd highest one) that has the very dark rims along with many other goodies (especially the Bose sound system). Sleep can wait, gotta finish this review first :) After seeing both the HB and Sedan in person, I think Hatchback does better IRL than it does in videos, while the Sedan was almost more "bland" than it looks in videos again. A pity about the small rear windows though, a bigger rear window design for the HB had been preferred to me along with more legroom for rear seat which are the only major issues I find. Perhaps the seats could have been more comfortable coming from a Honda, they feel too tight for me despite I'm a thinny person but my legs if spread out a bit keeps rubbing in at the side support of the seat which is a minor issue too. The leather is better in this regard because the sides aren't as pronounced or because the seat is more stiff but then again leather is only available in Luxury trim here and you cannot get manual with Luxury trim either so.

@@autogefuehl I'm suprised you think think fabric works better as my initial thoughts would be leather might be better since you don't sink into the chair as much as the leather seats are noticeably stiffer and the side support of the chair seemed pretty stiff too so I was thinking due to the leather seats not sticking up as much on the sides it might work better but this is just based on quickly sitting in the car for like 10 mins so. Also lovely review, felt like you touched every subject an interested/potential Mazda 3 buyer might wanted to know. Only the breaks I'd personally be interested to know if it's more linear breaking or breaks that quickly grip a lot without a lot of travel. Personally I absolutely hate very grippy breaking performance, on my Honda Civic 2007 Sport it feels very linear with a lot of travel to it so you can precisely break exactly the amount you want, especially cool when you just want to roll smoothly to the next stop, in several other cars I've tested it feels just way too grippy, I hate that feel, on my Honda I almost keep lightly breaking for the sake of how nice it feels to me, very addicting feel with Linear breaking performance. :p

In my country you have 3 trim levels. You also can get leather in the middle trim. I ve got the middle trim. The highest trim level only have different head and tail lights, and some smaller things. I'm very tall but don't have problems with the seats. But still don't have a longer drive then 3 hours or so.

Thomas, great detailed review, thank you. I’m wondering why you don’t use a clip-on lapel microphone rather than having to hold the microphone throughout the full review ? Seems it would be easier for you and leave both hands free ? I realize your microphone has the Autogefuhl logo displayed for advertising purposes, but you could wear a shirt with the name and logo on it.
@autogefuehl5 жыл бұрын
Cheers! If you take a look at our driving parts of the reviews, you see that we of course have clip-on microphones. However there are several good reasons to use the handheld microphone very often, we do that intentionally. See more details here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2nQk6qbr8mSjLs E.g. that spot here was quite noisy because it was directly next to a road with trucks. Often you cannot see the "loudness" of a location on picture :)

In North America sales of the new Mazda 3 are down 18% from last year. Their strategy to target more luxury buyers and eliminate the entrance level trim has backfired. Also MAZDA ARE YOU LISTENING ? YOU OFFER ONLY ONE COLOR THAT HAS ANY EXCITEMENT - THE RUBY RED. OFFER MORE EXCITING COLORS. ALSO OFFER A TURBO OPTION AND WATCH PEOPLE GET EXCITED ABOUT THE BRAND.

It didn't backfire. Luxury products are low volume sellers so that is normal. The mazda 6 is doing well. Explain that?

It's very nice. Mazda just needs to offer a sporty version with more horse power, faster acceleration, and maybe some exterior add-ons to make it look more muscular.

Watching this in mid 2022 where we're living with near Mad Max fuel prices Planning this with Skyactiv x GTSport Tech over the BMW 2 series and Jag XE 5ompg is epic - hopefully dependable over time

Great long in-depth review. How do you think they will handle the SPCCI with different combustion properties of different petrols? Also i'd guess the climate temperature would have an effect on this. I mean driving in the South-Europe heat sounds very different than driving in the freezing cold of north Scandinavia - how do they calibrate the SPCCI to function properly in both conditions? Do they change the lambda on the fly or use different pressure or what?

Good test of a nice and interesting car! Considering Germans and driving, I always feel relieved when I pass the german border... I hate driving in Germany more than any other country. Ofcourse it's just the few dumb and aggressive drivers that is spoiling the impression, but there seem to be more of them in Germany than most others. Using head beam flashers when you're already doing 160 and overtaking 2 trucks on the middle and right lanes, overtaking you and then slow down when driving in front of you, some even overtake at high speed using the emergency lane. I have never ever seen that in another country. Using flashers to pass is illegal in Germany as well!
