After panning out most of the gold from the number 1 compartment, you could throw the rest of it in with the number 2 concentrate..then save all the number 2 concentrate,...for later. Basically forget you have this mother load until you've got enough saved up , then you could re-run it on your shaker table...after..perhaps..running this concentrate through your mini ball mill...love your videos...thanx..

Would be great to see you collaborate with @sreetips on a video! The smelting process is a really interesting comparison to chemical refining in that you look for metal solutes to settle to the bottom of a solution, but your solution is molten with the liquid metals settling to the bottom and sreetips' is a lower temp acid with the metals ultimately "cementing" out.

10:30 you need to force that solution to circulate more so you don't end up with dead zone right around the anode which allows for a much higher depletion rate so you have less in solution to worry about when it comes to the disposal of the waste from this process. Simple cheap and effective is a bubbler like the one I made from vinyl or ideally silicone tubing a piece long enough to make a Loop of hose the approximate diameter of the midpoint between the center and rim of your container and just make small slices about a third of the way through all along one side of it then make the Loop put it in your Reservoir and it should make a pretty uniform circulation should make that process run a lot faster

You shouldn't waste that slime/mud's physical state. A splash or two of nitric acid would put the copper and silver into solution, and leave the precious gold. Solidifying the stuff before separation just makes it that much more difficult. It would need to be re-melted, cornflaked, and re-dissolved in nitric at a later point anyhow. And the cornflaked stuff doesn't dissolve nearly as quickly as the mud -- due to greater surface area exposure to the acid.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but I know that gold and silver can both be used in plating. So what was in your setup that took the copper to the cathode but not the gold and silver? Was the electrolyte something that copper could dissolve in but neither gold or silver?
@claytonmccormick6222 жыл бұрын
it is fairly easy to convert a computer power supply to provide a 5 or 12 volt if you want to sell toe copper it is well worth running it twice as you will need to do that at least to get 99.99 pure copper so you can sell it as bus bar grade.
@alanpecherer5705 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of following Sreetips example of performing this process in a stainless steel bowl. I can't see gold dissolving in sulfuric acid unless the acid is heated and concentrated, which is phenomenally dangerous. Ultimately, I believe you'd be better off dissolving your raw anode in dilute (35%) nitric acid to get the base metals out, leaving the kind of "honeycomb" Sreetips gets to beginning an inquarting process. Perform some number of nitric acid boils. He does 5 or 6 nitric boils. It's an unfortunate fact of life that you can't really refine silver and gold without nitric acid. That's what keeps me from getting involved with it...I just don't want it around. Also, I think you have to find a friendly someone with an XRF gun who will shoot your samples and buttons for free or even cheap, like $5 a shot.

Your fluxes very so much, and some destroy the crucibles. You say standard flux and then you show how it fails? I am not just referring to to this video but of the many I have watched of you. I am glad to learn with you but I still kind of feel lost. I have the textbook from Legends on fire assaying. I will tell you my issue, I have Hemmotite 5 percent gold according to XRF gun, 3 percent copper, 2 percent Zn, 88 percent iron. What flux do you think would work? The book only mentions Hemitie twice in the book? I used your flux recipe from the video with concentrates and you got 15 g of PM's. It turned out so different from your smelt. It was a dark green stone looking, even small grain with edges of clear green glass with a very golden hew to it. The button when cupeled disappeared left very yellow crustiness in it. Could the copper be moving the gold into the slag/matt? Oh yes, and these weird white powdery crystals or clumps in the slag looks like broken white ceramic tile in it. I think the blue of copper and yellow of gold could make that green. I am so fascinated with doing this stuff. You inspired me, I am glad to be doing it. It is great fun for me and gets me outside working.
@dekonfrost73 жыл бұрын
You need cupilation. To get a really accurate reading on your samples. Make the bone meal then weigh the prills before and after but you need a for real scale .00001 accuracy to get a weight by ton calculation thats worth a dam. Stronger flux destroys crucibles. You need to make them if you are smelting low grade ore to metal. Thats why they used to use mercury and cyanogen gas

Electricity? Nope, electricity won't select metal for you. This process was widely use in industry to coat metal a to the metal b. How do you sure all metal get electrolysis are all copper but nothing else? The deposit on the copper plate can be anything from copper, silver and gold. All the best conducted metal use in industry. Lead also happens to be conductive too, check your car battery, no wonder you say the copper plate becomes heavy. The metal ions can hide inside that pot of battery juice too, if you put nitrate acid in that pod of juice, it turn cloudy colour, very likely there are some silver and gold ions inside. To suck it out, you have to boil that juice with a lot of nitrate acid. Which is a SERIOUSLY DANGER move, corrosive vapour in high temperature can kill.
@robertjeffery32374 жыл бұрын
luderick wong it is the electrolyte and the amount (95% I think) of copper in the anode, that allows selective plating of the copper. This is the same process that Anaconda Copper uses to refine copper to be used in electrical wires.
@luderickwong4 жыл бұрын
@@robertjeffery3237 how? In a normal situation, say you want to coat copper on iron. You have to prepare a pot of juice contain such as copper sulfate, and only copper sulfate, no other metal. Then you have to prepare a sacrificial plate of copper too. The case now is, you have a pot of solution x, which is not only copper, and a sacrificial piece of metal y, which is a alloy of multi metal. Nothing is pure in this pot, therefore very likely the process did nothing on concentration of any specific metal. It is still “a bunch of metal in one pot”. That's why people use mercury in similar situation. Mercury can “liquidify” silver and gold inside that piece of alloy, and then the quick silver can be steam away in a furnace. Just listen to the procedure you can feel how toxic it is to the operator and the environment. Not recommended.
@robertjeffery32374 жыл бұрын
luderick wong if the plating is for durability or astetics the process is generally a CN electrolyte and pour anodes. For electrowinning the electrolyte can be any mineral acid with a soluble salt. The anode needs to be reasonably pure. 95% is the lowest purity that will not begin coplating emediatly. Watch Sreetips videos on how he refined silver to 99.99% purity. Also Sulpher doesn’t interact with gold and the Pt group metals.
@luderickwong4 жыл бұрын
@@robertjeffery3237 sreetip? You must be talking about his silver battery and other method. He is cooking his pot of battery juice with large amount of concentrated nitrate acid. He had prepare his experiment with ventilation, you can hear the fan blowing in his video, cause that vapour can kill. If you are living in a place with neighbour and doing the same experiment, they will come and get you with a shotgun. 😃
