Regarding playing like it's anime, a kid (like maybe 12) showed up to locals one day with your typical "deck in a Ziploc baggie," so all of us experienced meta players all agreed to use our casual/fun decks against him (no hand traps or negates and shit), and he just started going off like Yami Yugi with his 2011 starter deck, and we all got caught up in it. One game (I was playing Ghostricks), I got a full field out, activated Ghostrick Ghoul's effect, declaring "I activate Ghostrick Ghoul's effect! It allows one of my Ghostrick monsters to gain attack power equal to the combined original attack of all the Ghostrick monsters I control! Then, I activate Ghostrick Dullahan's effect to reduce the attack power of one of YOUR monsters by half!" Then the little shit hit me with a Magic Cylinder for 6k because I didn't have Mansion out.

You've socially committed yourself to spending time with these other players, whether they be perfect strangers or old friends. The least you could give them is your time. And I fully respect, at a casual, local setting just saying "I didn't draw any interaction, I'll stop you if I need to know what you're doing, or need something clarified." It makes things more efficient. But don't leave the table, man, come on.

It's perfectly acceptable to grab a soda or go to the bathroom or something while you wait. After all. You have the time. Just be polite and let them know youre going with no interaction and youll be right back.

If it's really as bad as that, why not just wait until its over, play it out for all the 10 minutes it'll cost you, then, win or lose, shake hands and go get your soda/bathroom break after? Like, leaving in the middle of the game that you KNOW is not going to take you very long, considering how hard your opponent is popping off, is so much more of a directed message than just waiting. To explain the magic short cuts, we short cut when we fetch a land by saying, “I’ll get something that taps for red to play this Goblin.” It saves some time because otherwise the game would drag on. The other shortcut is when at the combo, we only show the infinite combo one go around. That way we don’t have to do it for each instance

Important to note that you can only shortcut a loop if you can prove that its a loop that changes the game-state and doesn't involve luck, so you can only say "I do this 1,000,000 times and deal 1,000,000 damage to your face" if you have already assembled the combo

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a casual player at heart and find(at least at my locals)the atmosphere to be generally cold and unwelcoming, but one thing that bugged me to no end when I'd go to locals was the complete lack of respect the competitive players had for the game itself. They'd audibly groan at the prospect of playing more than 3 rounds, and one time two of them started heckling our store employees because it was taking them awhile to tally up points(mind you these employees were not judges or even players). Ironically enough, one of those two guys was a high tier official judge who is now banned from our store because he was caught cheating twice in the same night. His ban was met with celebration from most of the players; a reaction he himself said would happen when he was trying to weasel his way out of it. Yugioh is a game and is meant for fun. If you aren't enjoying the game, then don't play it. If you want to make money, then invest in the stock market instead of ruining the atmosphere of the community in the hopes of pulling expensive cards from OTS packs

​@Hunter Lees My locals are competitive, but they aren't dicks about it. Even when I am getting utterly destroyed, it's fun. They give me tips on what to do better and sometimes give me cards to help. Also, we run low tier days the 1st weekend per month where the really good stuff goes out the window. Most notably, no handtraps or omni negates (the latter being iffy based on if the omni is in archetype). It just makes the duels more fun and interesting. I have a dice rolling deck that I bring out on those days on the off chance I can deal 6k damage on a die roll.

One of my most unpleasant matches I've ever had, through no real fault of anyone's own, was at a local tournament against a dude who had walked in with a cold compress on his face from having gone to the dentist right before, and he couldn't talk because of that. Meanwhile, I was a complete beginner and I barely had any idea what _my_ cards did, let alone his. We struggled for minutes on end to do the most basic stuff between him pointing at cards, me reading every single one of his cards to figure out which paragraph was relevant to the situation at hand, and him painfully squeezing out single words like "pop" or "negate" to clue me in. So I feel like this is the right place to say it since it didn't get talked about directly in this video, but a thing I personally experience a lot is just people who are complete assholes, or just give off a vibe and act like theyre better than you. For a long while I've been someone who doesn't play meta, I've been playing things like plunder, krawlers, and other archetypes I enjoy an think are thematic and fun, but a lot of times there are certain people who like as soon as they sit down to play me they just kinda look at me like "oh fuck i have to play this guy again" and are completely uninterested in the match despite the fact that a lot of the times the matches are very close and interesting, and then afterwards I dont even get a gg or a fist bump or anything. Idk if my locals are just full of a bunch of assholes but the people who do this with me aren't generally even that good, versus most of the best players there with regional tops and YCS tops being some of the nicest people to me and having an absolute blast playing even if i get demolished.

I'm not a YGO player, but I've played several other card games. It's hard for me to put my red flag into words without providing this anecdote. When I played Vanguard, set releases were staggered worldwide, and most of the regulars at my local shop would spend their free time between matches discussing overseas tournaments and which archetypes were top-tier in each upcoming set. I didn't have a lot of winning days, but I had fun. Then, one of my favorite archetypes was getting a really unique new win-con, and I knew I wanted to build that deck more than anything. Without getting too into the mechanics of the game, it was a high-risk, high-reward deck that sacrificed defensive options to get one explosive turn in the late game, and it was off-meta. It probably took me two or three months of trading with other players at the shop, and buying singles online to get all the cards I wanted for the deck. It was by far the most time and care I'd ever put into deckbuilding, and by the time I was ready to bring it to the shop to play, I had a rare winning day, to which my friends said "you got so lucky," "That's such a luck based deck," and "f*cking luck deck!" That burned. I didn't play card games for a long time after that.

Red Flags, Red Flags.. welp, there was this moment where I played Ghostricks in a N/R Tournament, we had this guy that was a literal sore loser that would brag about his wins and flexes on you but literally call you a bunch of slurs in the Tournament Chat if you ever do something they don't like. He got suspended from the community - eventually banned - when they faced another Toxic player with a Control deck and they cursed every single entity that was playing a Control Deck of some sort. I looked back at my Ghostrick deck, went 1 - 4 or 2 - 3.. and decided to dismantle my whole deck and any other Control Deck I had at that current timeline, because I didn't wanted to get that type of backfire ever again. Months after we had the Ghostrick Solo Mode in Master Duel, I played it.. and celebrated my 10th year of playing Ghostricks right there.

Back in like 2015 I was attending a Magic Grand Prix. On my way to get some food, I somehow managed to get trapped into a conversation with a guy who was ranting about the event staff. Basically: 1) Dude shows up using card sleeves showing a naked anime girl, with her privates and nipples covered by tentacles. 2) After round 1, someone had complained to the judges that that had made them uncomfortable. 3) The judges found the guy, and basically told him to get different sleeves. 4) He demands they show him in the rules where he can't have sleeves like that. 5) They show him. 6) He starts throwing a tantrum, and gets disqualified from the event. 7) Convention hall security has to escort him out. 8) He spends the rest of the morning out in front of the convention hall, telling everyone about the great injustice they had suffered.

People getting overly frustrated is a very annoying problem. I play Machina and three times someone flipped their shit cause I used Ruinforce for game. The first guy stood up and tried to fist fight me, the second guy claimed I didn’t explain Ruinforce to him and tried to give me a game loss by running to the judge. Third guy spent the rest of locals telling everyone I only won cause Triple Tac and wouldn’t trade with me for the rest of the day.

I get that, though as someone that's been on the handing and receiving end of that, it does sorta put some social pressure on you. It puts the pressure on the opponent to feel like they need to win, because it always does prompt the question - What if they lose? It's sorta hard to find a way to bounce back if you just lost "The easiest win of your life" as advertised, y'know? Especially if they've been on a losing streak of their own, that can really just rub salt on the wound. Again though, I get the notion, but I had to sorta start considering these things, when I noticed people got really quiet around me when I said that and proceeded to beat them.

biggest red flag for me: when someone goes: 'that doesnt sound right' and call a judge on a card effect that is blatant and obvious beyond the sky being blue, just because they are losing. i had someone who went to my locals who would repeatedly do this, and had actually gaslit some people into doubting themselves on a regular basis because cards and effects they have come to know off by heart were continuously challenged and judge called in 0.001 seconds just because the card is strong, a key example of this is: one time when using "lubellion the searing dragon" to shuffle back "the light - hex sealed", from the graveyard to make "red-eyes dark dragoon", and having 8 minutes of the game wasted by him trying to convince the judge he was right and that it's an illegal move, directly after we had just played 6 months of tearlament format. he knew that king of the swamp with a tear worked because he played tear before the deck got hit, but he conveniently wouldn't 'understand' the ruling when it wasn't in his favour because he can't out dragoon. the judge only game us a 3 minute extension after the 8 minutes lost. TL,DR: people who will do anything they can, in any way regardless of the risk/frustration/arguments it causes, to cheese a win using a judge, just because they dont like losing. c'mon dawg. its a game, if you can't out the cards thats noone else's fault but yours and accept the loss.

There's a guy in my locals who literally wants to play against the new/unexperienced players o those who only have a "Fun" deck because he sees them as a "free win". He used to do that with me back in 2018 when I was a returning player, until I started to win against him consistently, he almost never wanted to play against me after. The guy also just built a Dark Magician deck (with souls, illusion, soul servant) just to make the other dark magician player at my local jealous since he's missing copies of those cards. The guy who thinks locals is more strict than regionals or something. Anything you do hes trying to find a way to DQ you. For example, if he catches you getting a glimpse of your cards before time is called to start, he will call judge and try a DQ, im not kidding, this guy plays every single meta deck and rage quits if he gets owned. No one likes to play against him because it feels like playing on eggshells. And the saddest part? Hes actually super nice friendly and outgoing, until he duels, its like a switch is flipped Or the guy who doesn't understand rulings and tries to tell you what your cards do despite playing them for years and he doesn't know the archtype (he had two white stones of ancients from a previous turn sent to gy, send the third on a new turn, and activated all 3 to special from deck because "this card" applies to all stones, and the fucking judge allowed it. One thing i wonder about is if im a red flag for anyone at locals. Part of it is just the fact that im naturally self conscious but also like, i work nights and so i have a naturally fucked up sleep schedule, so either im forcing myself to get up super early to be there or my sleep schedule got messed up and i've been up since like 4 in the morning and im forcing myself awake to be there. I am a Dark World player. I get it, long turns that may not go anywhere, questionable wordings, lots of durp. For me, its the players that rush me when I am already playing so fast that I am skipping the middle man (putting Lucent on field instead of grave, then field) or they immediately start card sharking and calli the judge with every new card I play. But as annoying as those 2 things are, the worst are players that do that, scoop in the middle of my turn, then side deck for the next 10 minutes. At that point I am thinking "ok, they didn't come prepared for decks like mine and are all about winning. I HAVE to win game 2 because 1 way or another, game 3 WILL be a shit show that will go to time with them stalling it out for a draw. The only out is to do enough damage that they can't burn me enough to at least break even and the scoop after basically insulting your choice in skin color

My redflag that I gave out was back when Spiritual Beasts were a thing (along with Nekroz) and I would immediately ask my opponent "so are you aware of the UltiCannahawk loop? So if you are I'm going to be real here, it's a pain to play out so we are speed running through it. If you have any interruptions the moment I go into it or plan on interrupting somewhere during the loop, say it first so we can save ourselves a 5 minute turn" Along those lines lol. This was usually a locals or convention tournament thing. Obviously I know you can just speed run through combos in actual Konami tournaments

If a player or both players don't have have zones on their mats, a field center is designated to show where the extra monsters zones are (on the sides of the field center). This also makes it easier to designate the rest of the zones of the field (monster zones are on the bottom of the field center, spell/trap zones are on the bottom of that, etc.).

it designates the center of the board. That is to say, between the two extra monster zones. this allows you and the opponent to line up your columns semi-neatly without needing to have yugioh specific playmats
