Soon I will have my completely untrained "all our collies before were always calm and never pulled the leash. We didn't need to train them" in-law's rough collies (3yo) over for two weeks.... I've never been around untrained adult dogs before. Is there any way to get any quick results for at least better leash behaviour?

Our puppy is an adorable and insane little guy! He’s only about 9-10 weeks old and very smart but when he gets into the biting mindset, it’s hard to break him out. We’ve tried many different techniques and try to stay consistent. Sometimes these techniques work, if he’s on the calmer side. But when he’s in insane bite mode, it’s hard to contain him even with treats. It’s a work in progress for sure. Thank you for your videos, we will keep trying to stay consistent.

Your videos were such a great help two years ago with my first puppy and I am back again for my second puppy! Hard to believe my second one is even wilder than the first, but also less food motivated (very interesting experience) Our newest member is a quick learner though, so it makes it balances out. This video is coming at EXACTLY the right moment, thanks so much! 🎉

My Border Collie puppy coming in 4 weeks. I wanted to prepare properly and started looking for online lessons. I´m German so I started with German trainers on YT. Then I came across your site. I quickly realized that you are doing it the right way. ALL German trainers (some famous from TV) don´t use crate & houseleash. It´s a mess. Dogs don´t learn 10% with them of what you achieve. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ONLINE COURSES!!!

The puppy nipping video worked SO SO SOOO GOOD with my puppy I cant believe it. Now I can pet, groom, and play with her almost without any bite. Actually, I hurt myself putting my finger in her mouth by error when we were playing today but she didn't bite me, I just pinched myself with her sharp little teeth 😂 So I think this video is going to work as well! thank you!

Great lessons. I'm dealing with a 14 week old Sheltie who exhibits the stubborn Sheltie mindset. He hates the leash and any immobilization he takes as an escalation and either has a meltdown or pulls away super hard. If he does actually settle, he goes right back to crazy/nippy mode as if the calming actions are a game. He's a smart cookie, but not really food or treat motivated yet. Hoping repetition will move his behaviors.

I have a stubborn Sheltie too.. 😅🐶 Mine is 13 month old and I thought she is going to grow out of this behaviour, but she is not. She is still as stubborn as she was at week 12... I am with her 24|7 and trying to get all her needs satisfied, but it seems as much as I give her (playtime, walk, training..) she wants more and more, like she never gets tired of anything.. Good luck with yours, I now started to deal with that, this is who she is, and besides being stubborn, she is the cutest little creature on Earth! 🥰

Great idea... never heard of a settle command. I have a rehoming blue healer puppy. She has many issues and learning to play with dogs has been interesting. Her fear level around other dogs playing was strange to observe. She took two days to join in. Just running around and being told she was a "good girl " was new to her. Don't know the true history. She still watches the others herding sheep. She is too young and fearful for herding training. We are getting the Fondation first. It's only her second week. I enjoy your work

My puppy gets aggresive and growls sometimes when i correct her at the collar for thia exercise. Shes also only 2 months old but so far she sits well and lays down with treat guidance and will stay as well but is still dealing with simply havimg the collar around her neck and scratching at it. My previous blue heeler didnt mind the collar and leash in fact loved it, however her behavior was much more calm and comfortable without the collar on and was trained in recall. My 2 month old pup exhibits similar behavior when the collar is off. I dont want to make the mistake of having her off leash too early though. 😊

My hyper 6 month old retriever mix tries to initiate play with me by biting my hands. She perseverates on it so much & she only does it to me, my husband has to hold her back half the time. I have to leave the room, but when I come back she goes right at it again because she’s so excited.

I’m in the same situation! Every time I walk into a room my 11 month pup goes nuts, jumping up and “mouthing” aka biting me! He grabbed hold of my sweater sleeve yesterday and managed to pull me across the room (yes, he is that strong) so I’m getting quite desperate with what to do!

I taught my dog when they were young that the only way they got any pets or food was if they were sitting. I have had two labs and the second one now hasn’t had a jumping phase because of it it’s very interesting. If I were you i wouldn’t talk to her or touch her unless she’s sitting and somewhat calm Hold your hands up so she can’t get them. If she can’t call down you remove yourself from the situation so she doesn’t get rewarded at all for jumping or biting Usually dogs bite or jump because they want attention. You could also always have a toy for her to bite and turn it into tug of war and fetch to burn some energy so she’s not so biting. If she wants to bite she probably will find something to bite so I like to provide something. idk if that’ll help but maybe good luck!

Do you have suggestions on how to deal with a puppy who eats/shreds their bed?
@Hedgeaboutme
@Hedgeaboutme 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t put a bed in the crate. Train the dog first to lie on a bed and “stay” and only allow the bed under your direct supervision. And of course, you have the house leash in the dog. If the dog starts pawing or biting the bed, interrupt and redirect his behavior to play with something else.

I take the treat away since I’m holding the treat in a fist- when my dogs settle down, I don’t open my hand until calm and waits patiently.if they try to get it roughly when I open my hand, I take it away. They’re like aww man, what do I need to do to get it? They might get frustrated- but they will get it from my hand when I can’t feel their teeth on my hand and only their tongue or nose. It’s hard though when you have a hard biter- I just took the pain for a little but if they’re food motivated and really want it, they will eventually offer what you are shaping/waiting for them to do. I do it with their food bowl (reward; wanting food), leave it command (practicing leave it with something not so high reward like my shoes- don’t want them chewing shoes- then reward when they leave it alone, I give them a really high reward treat for leaving my shoes alone), wait command for if they’re going to eventually going to get what they want vs leaving things alone because I don’t want them to get at it, waiting to go out the door (going outside being the reward).

There’s a McCanns puppy video about this, Julie or Julia I think? (Not Megan) hold treat with fingertips and your thumb covering treat. If you feel teeth, say ouch! And take treat away. Wait 1 sec and offer again. Repeat as needed until no teeth.

First off thank you for the great video! Question what if when you try to get your puppy to be calm and settle when you hold them tight or are trying to hold their collar and they get more aggressive and try to bite even more and start growling at you? We are trying to praise when he does the right thing and use treats to try and get him comfortable with us holding his collar? But at times when he is biting are hands or furniture he sometimes gets more aggressive? Also sometimes when leave the house line on and we go to correct him and grab the leash he pulls on it and flops around and try’s to bite and pull on it, he doesn't follow?

great video with good explanations. One of my favorite things about your program that I think other channels and trainers don't explain as well is the progressions. How to progress and when is a great key that yall capture better than anyone else I've seen. We used your puppy essentials program and the progression info there was perfect! Having the time limit on the materials is really unfortunate in my opinion, it would be great to be able to refer back to some of those videos and descriptions months down the road if a dog starts to regress. Thanks for all yall do!

What do you do if my puppy constantly tries to bite his leash? He’s coming up to 11 weeks and is always biting his leash when I take control or trying to do some leash walk training. Have been trying to correct him when he goes for the leash and do the trade method but once I trade for a treat he goes back to leash despite a chew toy also being offered.

12-13 week old Westie is normal puppy most of the time. Every once in a while the dog goes berserk and becomes uncontrollable just running wildly against leash limits over and over. We do our best to follow your procedures rewarding good behavior, ignoring bad. Happens about every other day. I get puppy energy and we go out and walk/play/run several times a day. What do I do when pup gets into this uncontrollable mode? So far I just stop the activity and pen or crate him till he calms down. Nothing else seems to work

What can I do if my husband and I are on different pages regarding our puppy's exuberance? I want to train our puppy, who is a wolf hybrid, to settle so my arms don't get sliced to pieces with his very sharp puppy nails (don't even get me started on disagreeing over trimming his nails, which can't happen without him learning to settle). For some reason my husband thinks that we are being mean (?) because our puppy has recently been a bit sick with a sour tummy that caused wretching/throwing up (seen by vet and theres no serious underlying problem) and him going off his food. Now that he's feeling better, my husband thinks that his exuberance should not be stopped, even though our puppy is slicing my husband with his sharp nails too. This is insanity. Can I be successful in our puppy learning self-control even though my husband isn't supportive?
