But there are some other common issues that people encounter when it comes to leash walking that need just as much training as the pulling. In this video, Instructor Carol is going to show you a few simple fixes for behaviors like leash biting, stopping on walks, and jumping up on dogs, and other distractions.

These videos are so helpful, my papillon puppy (11 weeks old) chews and pulls on the leash or house line as soon as I put it on him, he’s extremely energetic (crazy) I don’t walk him yet, but I put him on leash to take him out to potty in the back yard, there’s a lot of birds of prey in my area so I can’t just let my tiny 3 pound puppy run loose outside, my question is about collars vs harnesses, most of the videos show dogs wearing collars, do you recommend collars better than harnesses to gain more control of the dog while doing these training exercises? my concern is that a small breed puppy’s neck is much more fragile than a large breed pup, which is why I’m using a harness. But I wonder if the use of the harness is working against me. I’ve tried to show him how to not pull/chew and walk on a loose leash but this little guy is wacky, he’s not always food motivated, and keeps picking up leaves and stuff from the yard to chew on, most times he’s so distracted he won’t go potty while we’re outside, (or it would take a really long time)and then shortly after we come back inside he’ll have an accident. Thank you for all the great content

Why wouldn't you use a chain collar? I find the chokers way more safe should the dog try to back out to escape. They also give a clicking sound before the dog reaches the complete limit which warns them to brace up whereas a flat collar gives no warning and just gives a hard impact. They are also less likely to fail. I guess I'm paranoid the dog might escape and get in big trouble.

Me three... She talks AS she's showing us WITH a dog. My 4 month old started biting the leash and when I'd say "no" and pull it out of his mouth it would turn into crazy zoomys with barking, jumping on my legs, biting my clothes & growling when just seconds ago he was perfect. Idk if my walks are too long for him, he's overstimulated, tired, thirsty, hungry or has to poop. When it's on a neighborhood sidewalk (not a remote path) it's so embarrassing. Ugh. I'll deff try these tricks next time!!

Thank you so much for this!! When my puppy is doing something wrong I don't see in the mainstream training videos, I get so frustrated with both her and myself. But this particular instructor is so great at addressing less commonly talked about issues, and also being so sweet to the dogs and addressing different techniques for different dog personalities. 🥰🥰🥰

My Boston pup was a stopper. I tried bribing him with treats at first to get him to move, but I’d have to bribe about every 10 feet. It was so frustrating, but then one day, idk…I decided to carry him. Just go on a walk carrying my 12 week old pup. I know not everyone will be able to do that (my pup was and still is quite small) and a lot of people in my neighborhood gave me a bit of heckling (“Ain’t he supposed to be walking?” “Ain’t he got legs?” Etc) but what this did was engage his curiosity. He was like “Hang on hang on hang on, what are all those sights and smells?” And I actually rewarded him trying to wriggle out of my arms, by putting him down. Then he was glad to walk the neighborhood and explore. :) And now his walks are his favorite!

Nice video, for hoppers what if the cause is a place? When I walk her through the housing estate there are dogs behind walls which she can hear and always goes mental walking by, but it's the only path we can take so should we do the sit and stop there ?
@TheClawrenc
@TheClawrenc 3 жыл бұрын
You are bang on. Anytime or any place our dogs lose their brain we can give them something to do. And that sit is ideal. Once they are calmer we can move ahead. It may be a little tougher because the situation we showed the dog moves away. you will need to move through but establishing calm is still a great strategy.

Tips for a husky puppy who absolutely loves our older dog (who is about 30 lbs) and tries to play with him, but the older dog balks? They lick each other a lot, but as soon as the puppy starts nipping a little or gets in the older dog's space, we get a snarl from the older dog. Not sure how to encourage a good relationship while not allowing the nipping and sometimes intrusive behavior.

So our new 9 month old border collie pup stops on walks when he sees other dogs and will lay down ready to playfully pounce at the other dog would this method work for such a situation or is there something else I could try? He is also a major puller or can get fixated on treats and will stop and wait for treats rather than focus on going toilet or walking forward.

My 6 month old lab still continues to pull. I have been trying for months. The only time he walks nice is when I have treat. As soon as he gets the reward he’s back to pulling.

yep I have been trying to work through all 3 of those problems. My 1 year old is a deadweight pancake when a dog is approaching and crossing roads can be a nightmare, she'll lunge at anything which makes walking on city sidewalks challenging, but the worst is the chomping. I've tried the chain, the bite deterrent and even reaching for the collar and it all turns to jumping and biting me instead. *sigh :(

At one year she has had lots of time for bad habits to become ingrained. Sometimes it helps to go to a professional--even just once if money is an issue!--to help point out behaviors YOU are exhibiting that you are unaware of. The problem is very rarely with the dog. The fact you watched this shows you are interested in making a change, which is a great place to start. Don't give up.

someone I know has a Havanese traumatized by lightening and is afraid to go outside is first issue and second is that she hates going to the groomer and sulks for a couple of days. How do you deal with the condition of fear from loud noises like fireworks and lightening and turn hating to being groomed to at least tolerating it.

My four month old puppy is not motivated with treats. What do I do?

I'm trying to use my 8 week old puppy's leash to potty train but she just bites at it and rolls onto her back. Similarly, whenever we go outside she just wants to lay in the grass and eat it, and if I move she chases after me and does it all over again (herding breed). Also, for regular training. She isn't very food motivated at all, she doesn't like following the food so it's hard to train tricks and crate train.

I don't know if this will help at all, but I have a heading dog mix, and at first she just wanted to herd everything and wouldn't listen to me at all, but I got a couple of chickens and to satisfy her need to herd, I would let her herd the chickens and train her a bit with that. Afterwards, she's all tired out and she actually carried on with regular training just fine. So maybe all your dog needs is some training to satisfy the urges that comes with the breed? Sorry if this doesn't help, just decided to share some of my experiences.

@@beautifulpeeps7086 we aren't allowed to have farm animals nor would my mom and her bf allow it, nor would we have the time to take care of chickens. i'm fine with her chasing and herding me, its the not being food motivated/willing to train and the biting at the leash/rolling on her back/eating grass that frustrates me.

I want to try to apply this to my dog that I’ve got my grandparents house that we only taught her how to herd sheep that’s it when she gets on a leash you just drops like a sack of potatoes, but if she’s off the leash, she will follow me, so that’s what we’re having problems with her sister didn’t have this problem

Hi so we’re getting a dog for the first time and r confused between Maltese and cocker spaniel. Which dog do u recommend?
@user-ei6ff4rx6l
@user-ei6ff4rx6l 3 жыл бұрын
i’m no dog expert by any means, we recently just got a puppy but i’d say research each breed and see which is a good fit for you. maltese are very intelligent and easy to train but potty training can be hard bc they’re small dogs meaning smaller bladders they can also be quite sensitive and do tend to bark a lot. cocker spaniels are usually pretty gentle and loving, easy to train but are also barkers. this puppy we got recently is also our first and i just want to let you know that puppies are a lot of work, even more than you think. my entire family and i didn’t realize this and didn’t do enough research around it. especially if your puppy is young expect a lot of potty accidents, biting, and sometimes crazy puppy behavior. be sure to be loving with your puppy, though they can get very frustrating at times, you gotta be extremely patient(we’re still working on this) because remember they’re basically babies. try not to reinforce bad behavior/habits like when they whine don’t give attention until they’re quiet. puppies are adorable but seriously a ton of work. you have to be consistent and will probably lose a lot of sleep as you need to get up every 2-3 hours when they’re young to let them go potty if you decide to crate train them, which is recommended to speed up potty training process and reduce accidents.

My dog is OBSESSED with squirrels and rabbits. We walks so good until he sees one. Then he’s jumping and biting the leash. I don’t think he’s trying to play tug. He’s mad at the leash. How do I prevent this?
