The whole "grunge" and broader alternative rock scene of the early to mid 90s was really magical. The last great organic musical scene before the internet.
@AmarissNevae3 күн бұрын
I like that description: organic. ✨️🎼✨️
@ctguitarguy85103 күн бұрын
@AmarissNevae These musical scenes could form organically because we weren't so interconnected and decentralized in our media, cultural consumption, and communications. The early internet started to catch on as the 90s progressed and when faster broadband internet came around the turn of the millennium. As a child during this time and a young teen in the late 90s, I can tell ya, there was just something in the air. It was different. Once the smartphone happened, this type of organic musical scene went away. You see this with gen z folks who share, in record numbers, videos of concerts and social gatherings where we had technology, but it was pre smartphone and people just had a good time, and more normally socialized. Gen z marvels and yearns for this because it's something humanity now misses a lot.

I can still recall that amazing era. The way that alt rock and “grunge” exploded and took off, it was almost out of control. (The bands labeled grunge never called themselves that.) I went to a store and it had huge bins of flannel shirts. Now I can see they were jumping on the trend to rake in profits. But I still bought some and wore them to school, hoping to be a part of it all. Many years later, I concluded lead singer Eddie Vedder is a very good guy. He’s an artist with really decent values. I base that on interviews and quotes and different stories. And PJ is actually still going today, incredibly. They’re unfortunately the last band standing, but all that awesome music is still very much alive. P.S. I feel I should mention homelessness and drug use is a big problem where I live. And it wasn’t a factor when I first moved here almost 2 decades ago. But little by little, I saw more and more signs of it. Seems that it slowly but surely creeped into the area. And I understand it’s gotten bad in many places. People obviously need to find other ways to cope with hardships than using. But dealers and such types shouldn’t be preying on vulnerable people on the streets.
@AmarissNevaeКүн бұрын
I see. That would be strange if they referred to themselves as grunge. I would have bought flannel, too. I love how they dressed in oversized layers, as well. It appears that Eddie Vedder is "straight edge," and perhaps that's why they are the last band standing of that type? I'm not sure. I did watch one short of him where he won a Grammy, and he stated that it meant nothing to him. I like that about him. He doesn't seem materialistic or doesn't allow a Grammy to define him or his band. How admirable. As for the homelessness, I understand what you mean. I wish they would come up with better programs to help them. Maybe get them to pick up large quantities of trash in exchange for help. ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️🤍
@matthewgoodA1206Күн бұрын
I didn’t know Eddie might be straight-edge. I’m struck by that because I’m straight-edge myself. If true I’m glad he lives that way.🫶

Pearl Jam were formed in Seattle, Washington and their debut album 'Ten' in 1991 became one of the most successful albums of all time, selling a staggering 13 million copies in the US, and millions more worldwide... After the breakout success of Nirvana in 1991 and their album 'Nevermind' (Nirvana was part of the Seattle scene as well) ...the focus fell on Pearl Jam in 1992 and their album rose up the US charts to #2 and the music video for the single 'Jeremy' became a huge MTV hit, despite its dark depiction and subject matter. Drummer Dave Krusen was fired after recording 'Ten' and Dave Abbruzzese (drums) did the tour and was featured in the music video. Pearl Jam became tagged as part of the 90's grunge rock scene w/ bands like Alice in Chains ... Candlebox ... Soundgarden... as well as bands outside of Seattle - Stone Temple Pilots... Smashing Pumpkins ... Soul Asylum... etc. However, Pearl Jam were not comfortable w/ the massive success of 'Ten' and the media attention they got... Going into their 2nd album 'Vs.' (versus) in 1993, they refused to make a music video and only promoted their songs on radio or on tour... They declined to perform in '93 live on MTV w/ Nirvana... Still, 'Vs.' debuted at #1 and sold 7 million copies w/ the singles - 'Rear view mirror' ... 'Animal' ... 'Daughter'... Pearl Jam dominated the 90's, despite stepping away from MTV and from their grunge rock roots... releasing several platinum selling records like - 'Vitalogy' (1994)... 'No Code' (1996)... 'Yield' (1998)... Pearl Jam continued to record and tour in the 2000's and beyond... Their latest album 'Dark Matter' was released in 2024... The line-up is mostly the same: Eddie Vedder (vocals/guitar), Stone Gossard & Mike McCready (guitars) and Jeff Ament (bass)... Matt Cameron (drums) joined in 1998 from the band Soundgarden and has been w/ them since.

In my opinion Eddie is the best song writer. No, its not a contest and music is subjective. But Pearl Jam songs are fkn emotional rollercoasters. Only Eddie makes me feel 4 different emotions in a 5 minute song. Lyrically, Eddie is the goat. Also, he used to kill himself on stage pretty much every single night they performed. Fantastic band with a wonderful catalog. So, so, so many outstanding songs. Lastly, their "unreleased" songs, studio songs that did not make it on an album are better than most musicians official releases. Songs like Alone, Footsteps, Wash, and Dirty Frank to name a few.
