Of course you can. How would we describe it if the Native Americans sailed a boat to Europe first? We would say "the American's discovered Europe". That doesn't mean they were the first humans there. If you had never seen the Late Show before you'd say you "discovered the Late Show", that doesn't mean no one else had ever seen it before, it just means _you_ discovered it.

People seem to think when it is said “Columbus discovered America” they think it means for the human species….. it should be said like this “Columbus discovered America for the Spanish empire”. We always knew the Vikings were the first Europeans to settle North America since the end of the last glacier period separating Russia from Alaska; the problem is the Vikings never knew what they had discovered and never brought back the news for it to spread through out Europe. Instead with Columbus’s discovery for the Spanish empire, the Spanish conquered and settled most of South America through Mexico and into much of the United States that used to be apart of Mexico before America took it from Mexico (Spanish American war). Point is Columbus’s discovery for the Spanish empire was extremely important and set up the events both good and well horrific that would be to come. If Columbus didn’t make the discovery, it is most likely someone else would have eventually….. which would have changed both North American and South American history! Having said that, Columbus comittled such atrocities that even the Spanish were horrified sending Columbus back to Spain in chains…….

There's evidence that southern Europeans knew there were lands east of the British isles - news DID get to them long before Columbus. That and the myth that people before Columbus didn't know the world was round were just pervasive somehow in history in u.s.schools. since ancient times people thought the world was round because the horizon kept disappearing at a fixed distance. At least three groups traveled to the Americas from its eastern side - the Vikings, the northern France Gauls - for fishing, and Africans from Mali and other places in west Africa.
