It would be awesome if you could also cover the Linux compatibility of these machines. It's kind of a non-issue these days, but sometimes vendors mess with the BIOS/UEFI to make things harder for Linux noobs, and I'm sure people would appreciate that input. When I first went fulltime Linux, way back in 2005, I remember thinking that there weren't many good reviews on Linux compatibility.

Great work! I really appreciated that you tested out limiting the CPU to increased GPU TDP. Big gains in Apex Legends! I love that Eluktronics lets you tweak the TDP values so precisely, but I think this also shows that the Mech 15 G3 bumps into thermal throttling issues due to its high TDP limits. P.S. I'm super jealous! I really want to review this laptop. :)

This is awesome! Thank you so much for the Dyn. Boost test. This was exactly my thoughts when i saw Dynamic Boost on G14. As far as i know, some Ryzen software allows for undervolt. Do you think it will be possible to “force” G14 in 80W TDP this way? 1080p res might also come at handy. 20W of Boost on G14 is probably the highest boost range on the market, so it would have been great if we could take advantage of that.

@@KotMatrosk1n I'm late but theoretically you can do this is force dynamic boost to work. But this heavily depends on the game that you are playing. Games that are GPU bound, you'll see an increase in fps. However, games that require both a CPU and GPU load or are CPU bound may see a decrease in performance from limiting the processor. So it's a case by case basis.

Nice review, at least for the hours you had this baby with you. About the 1440p I feel more and more games are going to offer DLSS from now on (think about Unreal Engine 4 now having a free plugin for any game based on it), so I expect in the future, in case of needs, one can let the GPU render at 1080p then do the DLSS upscale magically to native 1440p.

That is by far the best and cleanest implementation of a control center/software I have ever seen! Other companies should take note and spend time to make a layout as clean and customizable as that. I just wish this had USB-C charging considering more laptops are coming with that feature this generation.

If they'd add HDR wide color gamut screen and USB-C charging it would be an absolutely best gaming laptop. And G-Sync/Advanced optimus would be nice though. Type C charging in really great if you're using it as a mobile unit, that power brick is too big and heavy + for most tasks (besides gaming) tiny USB-C charger is more than enough. Legion 5 pro will have it all but damn it's heavier and has poorer battery life. And keyboard is not mechanical...

Thanks Bob. Glad to discover the optimus works with Freesync. Never saw that one coming myself! But i guess it makes some kind of a sense now that NVIDIA itself also supports Freesync monitors from it's GPUs. So maybe they can pass the same signal thu all the optimus chain. And preserve that important freesync signalling information to tells the display when to expect the next frame. Very happy about that. Because it means all the other AMD ryzen laptops can have the same capability. So the only thing left missing in terms of MUX switching... is the 'on the fly' switching from optimus to DGPU without needing to reboot. Well nevermind still early days i guess. So is it a perfect laptop now? Well unfortunately no. Because as you highlight so clearly and so well in this video... The 1 remaining weak point with on these series is the damn keyboard wobble. Which has been there since day 1. Because the keycaps are not supported around the edges. Maybe it's a bit less apparent with the special custom domed keycaps, which XMG insists upon. In the german versions. But keyboard feel is important to get right in a laptop. Maybe it's possible to get used to it. And then learn to ignore it and be happy enough after a time. But still, when compared to lots of other laptops. There's just no good reason to have it, all except for them wanting to squeeze in a numpad. Which leaves no room for sufficient gaps / spaces in between each of the individual keys. If only they figured out a solution for the wobbly keys. Or otherwise ditched the numpad. In fact personally i don't actually want a numpad to begin with. Although others do. You can only fit so many keys onto a smaller laptop. And there is no way around it. Makes everything too cramped on the deck. If Tongfang went to the trouble and expense for redesigning the whole keyboard deck... then there is also a 3rd possible advantage. It then gives a new opportunity to shift the whole keyboard backwards. And really butt it up against the top edge. Exactly as we have seen on other laptops. That would create more room at the front of the deck, for a larger trackpad. Changing over to a 16:10 ratio screen would also allow for a larger trackpad too. Unfortunately... not so realistic! since we usually get 1200p or 1600p laptop panels for high refresh gaming. They don't want to be manufactured. Again the narrow mindedness there. To think people use their laptop exclusively for gaming only. Or for office work only. Not both. These are very simple and obvious ideas for innovation to improve this laptop. But it all feels rather distant... It seems doubtful they will update. Instead they might prefer redo a new design entirely from scratch. Yet whenever that happens.... these laptop makers. They always get something else wrong! And it's back to square 1 all over again. But with a different set of issues. I'm not dissapointed. It's just 'pick your poison time' all over again. As it is every single year. We could say: well ok lets just get the ASUS G15 instead. But then it has only 1 ram slot. And so on and so on.

Appreciate you addressing my pleas about non-native res comparison. You're probably, right I'd suffer 45 fps at 1440 for cyberpunk. But it's kind of a value thing; say If a 3060 can drive 1080p at the same fps or better without DSS I'm likely getting an equal or better experience at a lower price and potentially a better thermal profile (and my windows app scaling won't have to be 175% so I can see anything during regular use). DSS might not be as bad as I'm making out to be, might be a good topic for a future video.

Hey Bob, great video! My local tongfang reseller is selling this config but with intel 11800h. They also do sell it in the similar chassis to Eluk Max-15 with 11800h. I'm leaning towards the Max-15 chassis as it's lighter but mostly am concerned about the thermal performance. If I opt for the liquid metal paste, I guess it will be better? But by how much if you can provide an estimate? And how is the durability of liquid metal? Will I have to re-paste sooner when compared to a normal paste?

I am wondering with the QHD is the text / font look very crisp compared to 1080P as far as pixel density? Reason being is ever since I had my hands on a MacBook Pro I have to say the Retina screen is a pure joy to work with especially when doing some coding or writing. Can the same thing be said with the QHD screen on the MechG3?

Retina display is marketing and we have no idea what macbook you have but the best retina display on a macbook pro is 227 pixels per inch while this is about 188 ppi. Response time and smoothness with be faster on the mech g3 but the colors will not be as saturated or accurate in comparison but still plenty enough for professional work. Apple has really amazing colors but that doesnt mean these colors wont be good. Right now the only option that you can realistically get a higher resolution in a 15 inch package is a 4k display so the sharpness of 1440p is plenty in current year.

10 watts... :P. More watts is better but also it comes down to the cooling solution. not to mention you may never be able to use the dynamic boost in gaming situations anyway. I would say there is no difference in most games.

Why create the keyboard so dark. Can’t even make out which key is which unless the keyboard is lit. Smh. Flaw in eluktronics control center. When I click the tab to enter the keyboard lighting settings the app automatically closes out not allowing me to make changes. Upgraded to lastetest version does the same thing.

I think it's limited by the thickness of the laptop and cooling design. Even if they included a larger power brick, the laptop wouldn't be able to cool the components properly at those wattages.

@@omereren7382 interesting enough if I elevate the laptop the increased air will cool down from 80 something to 70 something and if I set the laptop on a fan which isnt even custom made for the job (think a desktop docking station that can be sold seperately and is custom fit to force air into the machine) I go into the 60 degree range. And imagine if you can dock to an egpu that is watercooled and plugged into the wall with the bandwith not being limited by tb3.

All of these laptops can run to their thermal limits. What’s great is that the Control Center allows you to dial in the wattage on the CPU and GPU separately plus disable Nvidia Dynamic Boost. You can get some insane thermals as a result.

Those panels still have too many issues. I had to return my Eluktroniks due to pixel issues - cold solder and stuck pixels.. and guess what - it happened on my Asus G15 too - which has the exact same panel (!) .. stuck pixel after using it for a week.. returned too.

Im starting to think that there will not be much of a gaming difference. I personally would not want my processor running at 95c all the time and would adjust it down to the mid to high 80s anyway. i would suspect that may put it in line with a 10870. Just speculation on my part though

Wow I just looked up this laptop on electronics. As far as I can't tell it forces you to use 5800h with 3080 and charges extra 500 euro. If you want extra SSD size you have to take extra ram of 32gb. This can't be right

There are a few rebranders with this model like XMG. Eluktronics sells to Canada as well but their shipping is absolutely nutters and I refuse to buy from then because of it. $250+ CAD I would bet international orders would be even worse.

To me, it's annoying that reviewers aren't mentioning anything about the fact that if you are using it in a hybrid configuration (dGPU->iGPU->Display) You are losing FPS due to it taking CPU cycles to handle the display. There are a lot of videos on this across YT. The hit increases significantly on CPU bound games but any game, period, will have an FPS drop by doing this. Also tJ is 105c so it shouldn't be throttling until it gets close to that. 90's are still going to be OK. AMD is on record stating that 90's are fine for extended periods of time, at least on desktop CPUs.

What? I was very clear on the hybrid and MUX solution here in fact I am one of the few people on this platform that have been talking about this for years. TJ is set to 95c on this laptop. I said this and showed this in the software.

@@BobOfAllTrades I missed the 95c on the software, that's interesting that they are reducing the tJ Max by 10c. I can't actually find or see you mentioning why a MUX is preferable though. Don't mistake what I initially wrote as being directed at you, it was a generic statement mainly because of all these people that were reviewing the Zephyrus G15 (not sure if you did one) and few, if any, mentioned that you lose FPS by not having a multiplexer available to you.

​@@BobOfAllTrades watching youtube on a dual monitor while presonus studio one 5 (daw) app is open on laptop screen sitting idle w/ one midi track w/ konkakt 6 vst loaded on it that I use to practice piano/synth when i take breaks from watching tutorials on youtube...screen and keyboard lighting at about 50%. When I switch to integrated graphics in the bios i get better battery life but lose the ability to use a dual monitor hdmi.

Going back and seeing this again makes me feel better about the 130w scar 15. fire strike is 23,025, 26,142 GPU. 11,905. Time spy is 10,619 11,033 GPU, 8759. Yeah, the mech is a little more powerful, but the mux and 10w extra didn't help as much as I thought it would.

@@BobOfAllTrades I'd prefer it that way, yes, a comparable or reasonable real world OC. I'm still in the return period and if the real world discrepancy is going to be higher, I'd like to know. I'm looking for the reviews on the new max 17 as well. Obviously AMD is preferred, but nothing AMD with a 3070 max P and advanced optimus/mux is reasonably available.

Be aware that Eluktronics has no clue when they will get you your laptop. I emailed them for two weeks to try and get an update on my order and I kept getting a generic “Be Patient” I finally decided to call and see if I could get any more information out of them and I got the same “be patient” line. When I told the representative Kieth that, that was not acceptable because they already had my money, and all I was looking for was some kind of update, Kieth HUNG UP THE PHONE. I quickly called back and cancel my order. I want do business with a company that thinks this is a OK response.

1 x USB-C is pitiful. This is a massive problem with laptops of which the builders and manufacturers are probably unaware, since there's no way to measure negative sales without running specific research to find them, but there are lots of good laptops which people like me can never buy because we have peripherals that need more ports than this. If you're into music production and you use a Thunderbolt 3 interface, you can't buy this laptop (USB4 would have worked with TB3, had it been present). If you use a USB-C interface, this laptop is still useless because audio interfaces do not have Thru connections. Increasingly, instruments use USB-C, so even if you do use an old USB interface, you still have to choose which of your instruments to plug in one at a time. Video editors and graphics artists face the same problems. Even my XBox controller uses a USB-C. My laptop from 2017 has TB3, 2 x USB-C, 4 x USB 3.1, fast LAN, a card reader, 2 x mini Display Port and HDMI, so how is it that so many laptops in 2021 have so little to offer? It's as if they're thinking that a gaming laptop will strictly be used for playing games, but even then you couldn't plug in your phone and your controller at the same time.

For sure! However, there’s something that’s holding back TB4 on these laptops that is unknown at this time. When I asked Eluktronics about it, I was shown bits of a conversation that was had with their chassis builder. It was vague but it seems there’s some perhaps, certification issue that doesn’t allow this to happen at this time.

@@statoskop Это больше от качества сборки и припоя зависит, процы же все имеют одинаковый лимит по температуре. А вот с компонентами на материнке могут быть траблы. Видел обзор этого ноута, там мужик разобрал его и достал систему охдаждения - онф совсем скромная на вид, наверняка все внутренности прогреваются.

@@user-kw2wd9dq7x "отвал чипа" здесь чисто условность, при таких температурных режимах отлететь может много чего, здесь я согласен) Процессоры может и имеют +- одинаковые лимиты, но вот инженеры ноутбуков у разных фирм явно не все получают деньги за то, что следовало бы делать. Один и тот же проц может быть в районе 75, в то время как другой ноут будет минимум от 95 прогреваться

@@statoskop Я к тому что ничто (кроме жадности) не мешает инженерам разработать плату, спокойно работающую и имеющую огромный ресурс даже при 120 градусах, лишь бы чипы выдерживали. Так что отвалы - это следствие низкого качества разводки (не соответствующего расчётному телповому режиму). А за хорошим охладом стоит подождать легион 5 или 7 про, вот там кулер хтонический с теплотрубками шириной с большой палец. Но он и весит на пол-кг больше этого при чуть меньшей батарее.
