Great review! This is probably my next laptop purchase if it ever goes on sale. Have you tried undervolting the GPU using MSI Afterburner on either machine to see if that could reduce temperatures and/or increase performance even more? Were all the metrics in the video at the stock -70mV undervolt or did you push that any higher to like -80mV in BIOS or maybe more via Throttlestop or XTU or something? Also, looking at the CPU utilization % numbers it seems like the system is not CPU bottlenecked in any modes yet we are seeing a performance improvement between gaming and beast mode and I'm trying to understand why that is. I believe both of those modes have Eluktroboost enabled and the only difference is the CPU power limits right? Does boosting the CPU power while keeping the GPU exactly the same typically give more frames even when the system is not CPU bottlenecked or is something else changing as well between those modes? Lastly, do you know how much power the 2080 Super Max-Q draws when Eluktroboosted? B.O.A.T's review of the MAX-17 showed up to 150W for the 2070 Super when Eluktroboosted so I'd be curious if the 2080 Super Max-Q just goes to 115W or even higher as well. Thank you for all your hard work and helping bring awareness to lesser-known but still great machines like this one! :)

Thanks! Eluktroboost boosts the CPU and GPU power. The CPU watts touch can see as the PL1 value changes and the results in games. They don't want me to talk specifics but suffice it to say the 2070 boosts about the same as you indicate and the 2080MQ super, according to my calculation about 100w, although its supposed to go to 115w You have to use a wattage meter to measure this. I actually used -50mv undervolt for these tests because that was the standard at the time. I am now on the third BIOS and the extra UV was added later.

@@OWNORDISOWN Not 100% following what you mean by "the CPU watts touch can see as the PL1 value changes" but isn't Eluktroboost enabled in both gaming and beast mode so the only difference between those two modes is the CPU PL1/PL2 values? I thought Eluktroboost was enabled in both modes since that's what B.O.A.T said in his MAX-17 review at least. And since we aren't pushing the CPU to its limits in any games in either mode (CPU utilization nowhere near 100%) I was just surprised that increasing the power limits to the CPU had a positive impact on FPS especially since it also produces more heat so perhaps there is something else that's different about gaming and beast mode. Man now I am super excited to hopefully get this laptop someday if it ever goes on sale a little bit ideally! If I can get even better thermals with a -80mV undervolt + liquid metal that would be crazy. Honestly, my only issue with this is the placement of the webcam, if they can fix that with the next generation it pretty much becomes the perfect 15in gaming laptop for me. Oh also, forgot to ask but was all the gaming performance testing done in Optimus (MsHybrid) or dGPU only mode?

Great Review. its a good laptop just 2 things stopping me from buying it over others: 1. no oled/4k option. refresh rate not as important as visuals for me. 2. the gaps inside on the tells me it hasnt been designed well. should have bigger battery or speakers instead of the empty space. or make it smaller. the only other thing is the intel cpus at the moment are just too hot. and amd are getting paired with low gpus. do you have any idea on when we will see laptop 10nm H cpus? any time frame?

My stock paste was perfectly fine but its easy to work on if needed. If you repaste with non conductive paste and don't damage the cooling system it will still be warrantied, but not if you use liquid metal.. enjoy the new laptop !

Thanks for the review. It's great to see the different aspects investigated and it's particularly difficult to find reviews for machines that are not from a big name. I've been looking at the build of this machine from PC Specialist because I live in the UK. You mention that their BIOS allows the function keys to be used as media keys, looking at the keyboard that appears to be the case already. The media functions are on the keys, at least. But that aside, there are the operation modes that they provide and you point out that if the office mode is the baseline then the Eluktronics BIOS will squeeze more out of the hardware than builds from vendors like PC Specialist. I'm curious to know if you've investigated that at all, or if you have any way to find out. I know Eluktronics ship to the UK, but due to VAT and import duties I can get an Alienware with a similar spec (the main differences being an i9 instead of an i7 and a 300Hz screen) for only slightly more. And there's the hassle that'll come up if there are any problems with the machine. So Eluktronics isn't a viable option as a source.

Thanks. The media function was added late on in the BIOS, you will need to ask them if they have added it too, otherwise you will have to press the Fn key plus the function key to do it. I live in the USA so I don't get units from the UK I'm afraid. I know people who have bought it from PC specialist and the power limits are different and they have been trying to get the Eluktronics BIOS. I'm sure their machine will be fine.

@@OWNORDISOWN It'd be interesting to know what the limits on the PC Specialist build are and how it behaves in terms of temperature. I had a second look at it and unfortunately they don't do a 2080 Super Max-Q build, or so the site indicates. They have 2070 Super and 2080 Max-Q, so it's likely that the 2070 Super is the best build they offer in terms of graphics. The price for their 2070 Super and 2080 Max-Q builds pretty much match the pre-tax cost of the Eluktronics 2070 Super and 2080 Super Max-Q, so it's possible that they've just left the 'Super' off the 2080 option. I'm waiting for them to get back to me about that. They also seem to use a different power supply. I asked them about the weights of the power supplies and they said their 230W weighs about 1.5kg, so close to double the one from Eluktronics.

Also are the delete keys switched around on the batch we'd get if we bought it now? Or is that for a later batch? And also does your real time audio test, test audio being input and recorded or output? Any way to fix this for real time audio recording, which is something I do?

Hi Chris, its certainly bright enough in every day tasks and as you saw even outside it was OK. I probably wouldn't have noticed it was a but dimmer than most IPS panels if I hadn't mentioned it. I'm not an expert on real time audio. I certainly would like to learn more and have been looking for someone to interview on my channel about it. I install Traktor Pro 3 and mix both tracks and have the audio come through the speakers and start Latencymon.

Savin up for the 2070 super with 2tb and 32gb mem boosted only getting liquid metal on it. I want something to handle games as best it can yet as a trucker being portable matters too. Biggest issue ever is heat my alienware 15 r3 from years back literally warped the motherboard before I realized heat was a problem. Now I'm freaking paranoid all the time. Even if this laptop didn't handle temps decently for such good performance though after 2 months of laboriously researching really, nothing is quite as feature rich, consumer friendly, and valued as wonderfully as this series of laptops. Glad I was able to help ! Another to consider is the MSI GE66. You can access the advanced BIOS and undervolt there too. I reviewed it and ended up buying the Dragonshield edition. Both the G3 and the GE66 are very good.

The PCSpecialist one may have aa different screen, won't have the same power limits as the Mech, probably won't have little things like switch function keys to media keys as that was added later on. The Aero has a good screen, I have always liked them. Faster SD card reader, CPU won't boost up as much as the Mech of course.

OMG thanks for replying... I didn't like how much the vents in the bottom are not opened enough. So much potencial, but temperature rise. Being my first laptop I found the screen alright, never seen a ips in real life😅 also a 144hz i was wowed at the beginning. Colors are a bit off, kind of washed out and It shows few weird things happening when playing... Being my first laptop I might as well get a better one with thunderbolt and higher GPU. I would love the stealth 66 but at +£3K it's too much for me. Plus I need something that looks less "Gaming" as my fiancé will use it once a week for work. 😑

I think getting the liquid metal is worth it because in CPU work it makes a big difference. I showcase how it was holding a 400 Mhz boost clock advantage. And if you were to repaste it yourself with LM to save $65 you will lose the warranty. If you use XMP profile RAM you should be good. Their stock RAM I easily overclocked to the 2933 mhz. I do wonder if 3200 Mhz RAM would work.

@@viet17 The two year warranty at $99 doesnt seem bad. The 3 year one looks expensive though. In most admit I have never bought extra warranties and so far have been lucky. But for peace of mind you may want to. They are still a fairly young company so we dont see the track record of say Asus or Dell.

How is the build quality of this laptop, For example is good build or chunky plastic ? The GS65 is aluminum isn't it? They just used very thin gauge metal to save wait. The GS66 they used thicker aluminum, but still not as solid as this G3. Only the back panel is plastic and its solid, no complaints from me at all. This laptop is in my top 2 of this year.

Difficult as they all good ! If you dont get any benefit with having the extra 2 cores then the MAG 15 is a great choice if you want a fast computer with good battery life and a great video card. The RP15 now has the 62wh battery so I would expect about 4 hours of use and the boosted 2060 will make it as good as a 2070 MQ really. If you want even more GPU horsepower and a mechanical keyboard them the G3 is a great option. For me it was the perfect laptop but $800 more than the RP15 is a lot of money which probably makes that one the value buy.

Did you test both laptops and average them to be 275 nits or did you only test one of them for that purpose? The aftershock variant seems to have different power limits. Office mode on battery uses 50w and while plugged in office mode uses 100w and gaming mode uses 120w. This seems to be the cause of the inconsistent battery life. Hopefully aftershock can easily fix this.

At 10:20, how is the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q pulling 100+W in Office Mode while only 90W in Beast Mode? I thought this was an 80W variant according to the specs on the Eluktronics webiste which says (TDP: 80 ~ 115W) so I assumed the standard factory wattage in Office Mode would be the 80W and then the Eluktroboosted wattage in Gaming/Beast mode would be 115W (I assumed it would still be showing 80W in software but measuring higher when using a wattmeter). The footage shows that the GPU has more power in Office Mode which is strange and it's getting higher FPS too. This almost seems like a bug is setting the GPU wattage incorrectly on the RTX 2080 Super Max-Q model and not matching the selected performance mode correctly.

I wouldn't read too much into the wattages shown by RivaTuner. Here is the watts shown from my Kilowatt meter in the wall. I wasn't allowed to put this in the video: Office mode 200w - CPU was showing 25w, Game mode 205w - CPU was showing 44w , Beast mode 219w - CPU showing 51w. So with the BIOS I had - which was I think the second BIOS - I don't think there is really that much tangable increase in power on the 2080Q. The 2070 Super was a different story because I believe at Office mode - which was supposed to be the stock performance it was underperforming. Office mode: 116w - CPU showing 35w, Game mode 204w - CPU showing 45w and Beast Mode 215w - CPU showing 53w. This was in far Cry 5 , with me standing in a shed, Ultra settings.

@@OWNORDISOWN Something seems off here, the GPU wattage is dropping in the higher performance modes which doesn't make sense and sounds like Eluktronics might have some bugs or issues somewhere... For the 2080 Super Max-Q model based on the numbers you provided here are the remaining system power draw values removing the CPU: Office: 200 - 25 = 175W Gaming: 205 - 44 = 161W Beast: 219 - 51 = 168W If all the other components power draw remains about the same and the only thing changing is the GPU power between the modes (since we've already subtracted out CPU power changes) that means that the GPU is drawing less power in Gaming and Beast mode compared to Office. Which seems to be reflected in the Rivatuner values too where Office mode has the highest GPU power draw. Comparing that to the 2070 Super: Office: 116 - 35 = 81W Gaming: 204 - 45 = 159W Beast: 215 - 53 = 162W Like you said those values make a lot more sense although, again, like you mentioned it does seem a bit too low for office mode. I know you can't share too many details about Eluktroboost publicly but you may want to talk to Eluktronics about this if something isn't right. Also, just a side note, do you know if you can undervolt the GPU using MSI Afterburner while also in the Eluktroboosted modes (i.e. Gaming or Beast) and see a thermal or performance improvement?

The keyboard on my g3 was not level. It sloped down and back up around the i,j,k,l keys. Eluktronics told me it is due to the design and it is normal. What about yours? Did you notice anything with the keyboard?

If you prefer a full size SD card reader then the Mech is the way to go . If you want mechanical keys that's also the way to go. If you prefer a 17" screen then the max 17 is the way to go. The Mag 15 has a six core CPU, which is fine but if you benefit from more cores the Mech or Max is the way to go. For me, I use an SD card every day so that is important to me. The mechanical keys are really nice too. So the Mech is my choice even though I do prefer a 17" display

How about Max 17 - does it use same chassis as Mech G3? At least do both chassis share Intel collaboration for better thermal performance etc.? I have ordered Max 17 and while waiting for the delivery I came across different articles / reddit and amazon reviews about thermal performance, build quality, screen bleeding etc. As I am based in Ecuador, I had to order this laptop to be delivered to Miami where a friend of mine will be travelling back to Ecuador. That is why I even decided to opt for No Dead Pixel Guarantee and Liquid Metal by hoping that it will make Eluktronics team to put more quality control into the unit. As I wouldn't be able simply to ship it back if something is goes wrong with my Max 17. So now I don't know if I should cancel Max 17 and opt for Mech G3 that is built on official chassis in collaboration with Intel. However, I do like an idea of having 17" laptop after my Lenovo T550 :D

Hi, neither the Max 17 or G3 have anything to do with Intel other than the CPU and wifi card. They are actually made by Tong Fang. I reviewed the previous Max 17 and max 15. Look for my video where I visit the Eluktronics plant and interview their CEO. I do have the new Max 17 in house and it shares the same BIOS as the G3, so same power limits and features. Just a larger screen and membrane keyboard, no SD card reader, just a micro SD. It's nice. I would say battery life is about 5.5 hrs.

Basically you made me to give it a try with Eluktronics instead of Sager (was advised to me many years ago by a friend of mine).
