Have had these on my Giant TCX SLR 2 for two years now. I really like them. I regularly dismount and remount my front wheel from the bike and it almost never gets any rotor rub afterward, even with just QR dropouts. Soap or car shampoo used during bike washes does weaken the pads, but a few practice stops and power is regained. Just keep an eye on pad wear. If the pads are too worn down, the return spring begins to snap loudly every time the brake is used.

I have a Fuel ex 7 29er and the cablewrouting is for hydraulic hoses, even though I used my TRp spyke with gear cablers they worked well so far. The semi metallic pads give good braking power.

I've been on these brakes for over 5 years. I've upgraded my bike from Tiagra to Ultegra but I kept the Spyres. Are they as good as hydraulics? No. But they are very good for road and easy to maintain.

Hello from Sweden! Thanks! I've been skeptical about those, since I have hydraulic on my current bike! I was considering a Specialized Diverge, but it comes with exactly those breaks you show! Thanks for the comprehensive approach!

I have a 2018 Carbon Diverge with these and they work great ❤️ I just upgraded to TRP HYBRID(HYDRAULIC)-ROAD because of my riding style and needed the extra braking but with the ability to do emergency repair and adjustments that aren’t easily and as possible with full hydraulics. But for normal gravel and road the Spyre-C still works great! Way better than conventional single piston actuated mechanical calipers.

If you use decent quality wires and a good outer housing of the wires and make a quite good job in routing them without to many sharp bends the braking power compared to a cheap hydraulic one makes not too big of a difference but still noticable.

These are good brakes. V-brakes on my old bike sometime stopped working at winter. I think the braking surface on aluminum rim got covered with frost and ice when temperature dropped below zero, and then there was no braking at all.. Whatever how strong I pressed.. until the ice wore off and then the braking effect came to alive sudden, blocking the wheels. But with these, so far I haven't had any problems. It's possible that maybe the weather conditions just haven't been same.. But so far, I haven't had such terrifying experience with these as I had with v-brakes on my previous bicycles.

2:05 - for water proofness I'd suggest shopping for bikes with the brake housing end pointing down, not up as on the reviewed bike. No one cares, but I made a final decision in a bike shop between two "finalists" bikes in favor to the one that accumulates less water (salt and stuff) around the brake cables.

Yes, I have a couple calipers mounted like this and it's common that they are exposed to simple invasion by water and dirt so I always put a brake cable boot from v-brake over the hole to protect it.

I have a brand of cable disc brakes called Bengal on my tourer. They're super powerful and apparently even better than the Tektro ones at the same price point (They're the Bengal 606 - great price). Note that mountain bike cable disc brakes are different from road bike cable disc brakes, as the cable travel distance differs if you use drop bar STI shifters.

I think it is very underappreciated compromise between simplicity and performance. You get more precise braking power control comparing to strict mechanical brakes, more even (and longer) disc wear to. You also can have less costly shifting system on your bike due to cable routing simplicity.

I don't understand why do you consider hydraulic brakes more complicated. What is so complicated with a piston in a cylinder, pushed by the hydraulic fluid? I am more of a mountain biker and when I put my first hydraulic rim brakes back in the late 90's I found them so simple to use, to replace pads, no more worries about dirty cables.

Unfortunately, owning the same breaks, I find it performance disappointing in some situation. I live in hilly area and my total weight (bike + rider) comes to about 110 kg/ 220 lbs. Going down hill I have to squeeze breaks so hard, that my hands turn all white. I have to stand up and shift all my weight back, only then I can slow down. It is OK on the flat surface, but still no as good as hydraulic breaks. Purchasing a compressionless cable adds an about 80$ (~40$ per cable) and the total price is getting near the hydraulic breaks. Considering one needs to change cables every half to an year, it turns there is not much benefits to the mechanical breaks. For a potential buyers I would suggest to consider the riding terrain and your total weigh. One shouldn't buy mechanical breaks if one lives in a hilly terrain or not being a light weight. As for me I'll bite a bullet and going to change to a hydraulic break set.
@cannondany8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input :) When buying the hydraulic ones for your riding style, make sure you choose a model, that is overheating resistant.

I'm about your same weight and have had no such issues, even with the stock pads and rotors on my Giant Defy Advanced 1. You may have had glazing on your rotors, causing them to work less effectively. I later, however, replaced the stock pads with TruckerCo semi-metallic pads and replaced the stock rotors with Shimano Deore when the pads word out. I think the braking power improved, as did the modulation. I went with a larger 180mm rotor on the front as well, which required a different spacer for the flat mount brakes. They fit on the Giant Defy with no interference.
@FelipeLuizDickmann6 жыл бұрын
Late response, consider sintered pads
@ginsederp3 жыл бұрын
@@timkosem3521 The larger 180mm rotor on the front is definitely the biggest contributor to your braking power than anything else. Baring a genuine mechanical issue, a larger rotor beats even mechanicals vs hydraulics.
