It's possible to row and compete properly on a C2 rower without back problems. I've been doing it for decades. 10 miles a day during the off season. I scull on a river during the warmer months. That said, I would love a bio rower. The cost would certainly be "justified" if I had that money to spend at all. There are obvious advantages to the bio rower and it would be a dream for my crew to own some. But in the meantime, I am happy and healthy rowing high volumes and competing on my C2. Having proper form is critical but that's true for most things, right? It's not a bad machine, just needs to be used properly.

I totally agree with you… didn’t mean to imply that linear ergs are inherently bad It’s just that I have 2 friends in their thirties both personal trainers (not rowers) who suffered an injury in the thoracic spine (prolapses) on the concept 2. Like you wrote „proper form“…

well.... creatine for weightlifting, and 1g protein per kg body mass each day minimum. more protein than that can still provide greater benefits. I have done little research personally but this is the advice I have heard from many rowers who have looked into it more seriously. there are very few training-enhancing supplements which are known to be safe.

Just because he’s a medical doctor does not make him qualified to comment on pros and cons of rowing. A physicist or mechanical engineer would be much more competent with some basic knowledge of biomechanics and anatomy. Not even a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon who perform lumbar surgery would necessarily understand the forces and have a role here. That’s not to say that he doesn’t know the basics and has some knowledge and is very pleasant to listen to.

🙏🏽 thank you for the compliment and yes, you’re right. The medical degree itself is no guarantee for competence or expertise in this field. Here in Germany there’s a study course that’s called Biomecanical Engineering… that’s probably closest And most of the competent studies are done with an interdisciplinary team
