I actually already did the opposite technique today without realizing it before listening. Was so angry at my partner, and after taking a moment in our fight I went over and hugged him. It definitely led to a more peaceful tone.

Hey, I'm sure my best friend has either bdp or bipolar, I think it might be bdp tho, and she's in no place to get help, her family neglects are and are the main cause of her trauma, she has no way to pay for therapy or for a diagnosis, how could I help her? I have going to psychiatrists for many years and it was not until I got a therapist who used DBT that I made any improvement. My life has changed immensely and I feel SO much better. Previously diagnosed as bipolar but I knew that wasn't really right. Shrinks just want to give you a label and pills. Most therapists try to be helpful but yapping on about your feelings with no direction is just so frustrating. I give DBT a big thumbs up. 👍 👍👍💯

Shrinks have made a mess of things with BPD. They can't medicate it out of you so one decided I had bipolar instead and doped me out of my mind till another rescued me. The last one told me to get lost because she 'didn't do talk therapy'.

Totally agree. I was diagnosed BPD back in 1994, but it wasn't until 20 years later researching ADHD for my son when I stumbled across an article about the connections between adult women w/ ADHD & Depression that the pieces fell into place for me. I then had to self-advocate to get my correct diagnosis. Luckily DBT is helpful for dealing with many of the issues brought about by an undiagnosed Executive Functioning Disorder (AKA ADHD).

When I was 18 I was diagnosed BPD b/c it was the closest diagnosis my doctors could find to shove me in. I then went through 6 months of DBT therapy back in it's infancy. It was helpful, but not life changing. (Wellbutrin was life changing). But all the puzzle pieces didn't fall into place until I was diagnosed ADHD 20 years later. The two share a lot of similarities, and go figure, undiagnosed illness tends to create depression. I guess my point is, DBT therapy can be helpful for both ADHD & BPD. And, if you are a woman diagnosed with one, double check the symptoms of the other to make sure it's not a better fit for your specific issues. (And, of course, discuss w/ your psychiatrist. Research and self-advocacy are good. Self-diagnosis not so much).

DBT combined with CBT takes a great deal of time practicing before it starts working, I did realize by using both that I have problems with sensory processing issues and test really high for Aspergers (high functioning autism/autism spectrum). I am using some hacks for sensory processing issues and it helps me get through being in public for short amounts of time. I also have CPTSD, major depression and BPD. Yes I’m messed up. I moved into the country where it’s quiet most of the time. By controlling the Aspergers/BPD issues I can start working on the PTSD. For me it’s all a balance. I have had to come to realize I just can’t do what many can do. If I go against the disability and who I am I have problems. Setting boundaries and learning to say no has helped. I’m learning about narcissistic personality disorder because I seem to have lived with a few people who are malignant narcissists and psychotics. I have to learn how to interact with these people in conjunction with who I am. I practice mindfulness with an app from the VA. I also practice hatha yoga. Being distracted and dissociating is ok. Don’t judge yourself, be gentle with yourself and realize it’s ok to be you. I’m 60. It took me 55 years to get to the point of a nervous breakdown. I think I did ok considering.

The problem is, DBT is too technical. It's like "I have this problem", the answer is, "here, do that method", "apply xyz". That is just inhumane. Plus, some emotional reactions are just very appropriate. Like for example if you get angry or frightened when you are in an abusive situation. If you shut that reaction up with some kind of suppression method, you harm yourself more.
@ellca6824

DBT was developed as an intervention for those with borderline personality disorder. Often these people experience great distress and suffering in their lives which is why DBT is an effective treatment. For those who have experienced trauma, trauma-focused CBT or EDMR would be the go to therapy to address the underlying trauma rather than emotional dysregulation, as in DBT.

Exactly. Borderline people are extremely allergic to emotional invalidation. I am afraid suppressing emotions and pretending we feel the other way just makes them feel even more invalidated by the whole world, so they may finally think "hey, let's finally go through the long-postponed suicide! The world is really an unbearable place when even a therapist cannot give me the emotional validation I crave and feel untolerable menal pain for not receiving". And then therapists wonder why Borderline Personality Disorder patients suicide on them.
@petrairene
@petrairene 3 жыл бұрын
@@charlieangkor8649 Exactly. A lot of people with Borderline, just with the other personality disorders get that way because their needs and emotions were constantly invalidated during childhood. So these massive emotional reactions are not in and by themselves inappropriate. Like in PTDS, when something even vaguely reminds of the traumatic situation, the emotional reaction becomes completely excessive. So maybe the amount of emotional reaction is excessive in a situation, or the situation is just very vaguely similar but in this case objectively not dangerous at all. But the traumatised part just simply can not discern between realy problematic, justifies action and looks just vaguely like a problematic situation from the past but is totally normal and harmless.

This sounds interesting..I had never heard of it. I started out with a SERIOUSLY abusive mother...and ended up having to take over the care of the family at 14..my father was overwhelmed..and other family members simply did not know how to handle her..Long story short it set me up for "helping" all kinds of crazy people..to my detriment.. Top that off with MAJOR disasters..my crazy mother FINALLY left .after driving my sister into a mental hospital, leaving my father and me to pick up the pieces... CRAZY MOTHER THEN decided to sell our house out from under us... It ACTUALLY is amazing I was very depressed a lot but kept caretaking and pushing forward... I was almost murdered to shut me up about patients murders by my husband and best friend while they were in med school.. I divorced him..survived..and was deprived of a settlement for testifying against him..( they got away with it) My ungrateful sisters stole my inheritance...just after I was nearly killed by a negligent employer.. Finish.... Seven years recovering from head and nerve injury.. I got wiped out in Katrina/Rita... Six months living in the destroyed house..3 years in FEMA trailers..finally got an apt and somewhat stable.. Had to work in a horrible place again...hit with BP oil spill.. Living in a recovering area after multiple disasters.. I FINALLY DECIDED TO JUST PRETEND I WAS OK .AND ENJOY MY PETS AND PLANTS INSPITE of living in what I call "the upiddy slum" It's a slum in an uppidy neighborhood...so it is iffy in many ways in a relatively safe neighborhood... But in 2017 I had a resurrgence of pain and crippling from the accident..and one by one the pets started going... SO.. NOW...Although I did ok for awhile I am now feeling helpless and hurt over the WAAAAAY BACK CHILD ABUSE... This sounds like it might work..THANK YOU!!!

As I understand it, DBT is a therapy originally invented for Borderline Personality Disorder. It emotionally validates these people, which is what they really crave and feel like the world doesn't give them. It means if you feel like bad, you accept you feel bad and no emotionally incompetent wanna-be-friend pops up to tell you that your feeling is wrong and you should feel good in that situation, just because he lacks empathy and cannot imagine that other people can feel different in a given situation from him. It's a fact you feel bad. If a neuroscientist placed an electrode on your bad-feeling neuron he would really see a strong signal on his oscilloscope. So there's no discussion about it. It's an objective fact that you feel bad. But the problem with BPD people is they developed behavioral techniques how to react to their emotions which are short sighted or not the best in their interest and their consequences are additional distress in their lifes so it's like a circle. So the DBT tries to educate them about other possible behaviours they can choose from, which are acceptable for them, but will lead to a better outcome. Like the DEAR MAN is I think a set of possible behaviours how to deal with people. You don't need to change your emotions you just widen the repertoire the palette of your possible behaviours you can choose from.

I think a lot of people who are narc abuse victims can relate or have gone through a unique loss or experience such as losing your mom at a you age, which was also my experience.

She was explaining how it differs from cognitive behavior therapy which I appreciated as well. Dialectical behavior therapy is a series of treatments geared toward, as she mentioned, emotion dysregulation and distress tolerance to tolerate being present with their emotions. Think of the dialectical of dialectical behavior therapy as mutual interaction between what is referred to as reasonable mind, emotion mind, and wise mind to interact with ones own behavior through their emotions. That’s my reductive explanation. 🤙 Oh yeah and it is a combination of traditional western psychotherapy with eastern spiritual practices and is often a first step toward treatment with people who have experienced trauma in their lives.

Is there any way to get in contact with Dr. Judy Ho or any professional for an online session where our real life issues can be be taken into consideration as per our life experiences. Or our queries about life experiences. Because sometimes we feel that we have accepted and overcome our all worst situations but our symptoms(pointed in your videos)/cases/life choices/mind doesn't say that we have overcomed and accepted. And in that case, we have nothing more, what we can do about it. So if there is any way(messages, chats, online, telephonic, video or by any means) where I can connect with your team. Then please help me out.

Strangely, the first question was very relevant to me - PDA and Alexithymia are fairly unknown by doctors so I was surprised and happy someone asked this question. Unfortunately when you answered the question about Alexithymia you did not take into consideration that the caller's child also has PDA which is Pathological Demand Avoidance. Distracting a child with PDA is almost impossible because they do not tolerate any demands or anything perceived as manipulation. I appreciate that you understand Alexithymia, but unfortunately it reinforced my belief that all of these therapies struggle when it comes to complex cases and can do more harm then good because often practitioners aren't able to personalize and accommodate the therapy to the patient.

I really don't like meditating and am horrible with the grounding/ breathing kind of ways to deal with my dysregulation and that's all I've ever really have been suggested so thank you!!! ❤🎉

I have this workbook, and it really is very helpful if DBT is your thing (how did I know DBT is my thing? I am very much a believer in "things are bad and that's okay / manageable" vs. "cheer up by just thinking good thoughts! You're wrong about things being bad!")

This could help if diagnosed early, but I was 43 before that. This stuff is pointless to me as I learned to do this naturally to survive, and now this can never work. My underlying problem with learning from about 7 ish has yet to be identified and has been dismissed, and they will not test me for anything that could help, and this is in the UK.

I control the BPT and ASD by exercise. If I feel trapped and abandonment issues surface it makes me angry and scared at the same time. I know these thoughts are quite often false. Sitting still while I’m feeling the anxiety from these strong emotions doesn’t help. I go for a walk. I garden. I practice tai chi. Sometimes I just go for a drive and listen to metal. Megadeth helps with the anger issues.

I never knew about Linehan’s mental health history! The story I’d been told in various Skills classes was she had a group of clients who were not responding to treatment and had a tendency towards self harming behaviors. As the story goes Linehan spent time at a Buddhist monastery where she learned about Mindfulness practice, which became the foundation of DBT. I love the work you guys are doing here! May we live with more acceptance and compassion. 🔆

Your assumption that analyzing brings results seems not right. Instead, I propose synthesizing a multidisciplinary approach for better results. Treating symptoms must supersede eliminating the root causes! Today's science is handed down from generation to generation. Rishi craft is different. One Rishi has seen and interpreted the subject as an individual. So modern science remains as a convention only. Buddhism is put in the wrong cluster, according to western classification. But it is also a moral guide and an applied philosophy.

Mindfulness and grounding does not help me at all. If anything, it makes me more anxious, unfortunately. As for opposite technique, I remember reading something about acting out as if something exciting just happened, like winning the lottery. I tried it once, jumping up and down and hollering in excitement. It actually helped, but can only happen while alone or people will think I’m crazy. As for cravings, oftentimes I’ll drink some water, sometimes with lemon and stevia, and the craving will pass. My husband has a really hard time with cravings. He’ll eat 4 big cinnamon rolls and I’ll just be like, I can’t believe he ate all that! I can barely eat half of one. That’s probably why I’m not overweight but he is obese-something he’s struggled with his whole adult life. Setting boundaries with someone who is easily offended, like she said “if you behave this way, I’ll leave early,” could easily cause an argument right then and there. I have found that most people that you need to set boundaries with don’t react well at all to boundaries.

All valuable information but I do think these modalities would have more meaning to patients if a spiritual context was also taught. Humans are the ones who’ve separated our energetic connections and expenditures into 2 modalities of science and spirituality- in reality they are one and the division creates a lack of real meaning.
