So true about music! It feels weird in the beginning, to be using a CD -- or my phone -- to get medieval music; but once it's playing, the source becomes irrelevant, and the whole mood changes. It's also why -- whenever a kirtle gets a little too ratty and threadbare to wear in public -- it makes a perfect around-the-house dress. (My pfp is modern, but I generally spend more time in medieval clothing than modern clothing.)

Since I saw the lord of the rings, 9 years old, now 27, I have been enamored by fantasy medieval everything. My biggest influences were Peter Jackson, and Tolkien, as I'm sure is the case for most. I like that you're clear that you're talking about a fantasy medieval atmosphere rather than a historical medieval one, and that historical accuracy might be preferred, but isn't necessary. I find that better than a strict no-can-do for anything that isn't completely historically accurate, and much _much_ better than claiming it is historically accurate when it isn't. One thing that is very medieval... is working at home. Most medieval people worked at, and around, their homes. Especially craftsmen - having your workshop either in the same room where you live, or as a separate room in your house, was the norm. But even farmers would spend a lot of time working at home, weaving, sewing, milling, repairing household items, etc. Fishermen would repair their nets at home... I think it wasn't until the industrial era, that working away from home became the norm in cities. So, anyone working at home, be it because of covid, or personal choice, you are doing a very medieval thing! Also, it may be easier to 'medievalise' one's workshop if it's at home. Even if it's just a home office. And definitely having a crafting workbench at home, especially one geard towards woodworking, does add a lot to the medieval feel. Even if there are a few power tools etc. ;) Making things with your own hands (and some tools) still connects us to our ancestors. As long, as it doesn't feel like you're just operating a factory. *looks at a 3D printer and a CNC machine* xD ... ok, that's magic. Magic is acceptable.
@LivingAnachronism3 жыл бұрын
Great point! That's one of the reasons I started leather working was both to make my own items, and to learn a craft that many must have been familiar with to a degree. My workshop is in my room as well, and everything is kept in boxes and when it's time to work, I essentially just crawl around on the floor.

Wall hangings are a really good touch, especially if you’re renting. I’ve also found a pair of headboards that are carved in the “linen panel” (Tudor) style that I plan to make into a pair of settees or into a single deacons bench. Currently a good part of my SCA garb is kept in plastic footlockers although I hope to make wooden chests to replace them. I do have a couple cedar chests but they’re either too heavy or too fragile/old to use for events (one is likely over 200 years old so…yeah…that one definitely is treated carefully).
@LivingAnachronism3 жыл бұрын
I run into that problem as well, where I have an item that looks great that I really like, but I don't want to risk damaging or losing it. So I end up needing to versions of things, one to use, and one to look at. Which is a luxury very few actual medieval people could afford, I'm sure.
@missingallmymarbles76703 жыл бұрын
@@LivingAnachronism oh, I use the chests at home, they’re really useful as both furniture and storage but there’s a huge difference between a piece that sits on one side of your living room and the gear schlepped to and from events. Also, the lumber that is regularly available now is far lighter and less dense than the old growth lumber. I have old spinal injuries so any way to make things lighter for traveling, the better

Cedar chests are so awesome, and they keep moths out too. I haven't been able to afford one yet, but when I can, I probably will be keeping it home. . . bringing something so valuable to an event would make me too worried about something happening to it. And the weirdest things can happen at events! I came home once to find something had chewed a surprisingly symmetrical hole (but with "toothy" edges) in one of my spare pouches. . . and it wasn't a pouch in which I had ever kept food.

Why wait? You can start doing that now with the place you have just by carefully selecting specific pieces to switch out/replace as you go and add to the aesthetic as you find pieces to do so with. Thrift stores are a great place to find a lot of different things like clay pots, wooden bowls, cast iron cookware, woven baskets, and sometimes even pieces of furniture. I even found myself a great fireplace tool set, with stand, for $20 once. While I don't have a fireplace, I do have a portable fire pit, and there was no way I was going to pass up a set like that which matched the rod iron furniture I have!

I have a "coffee table" and two end tables which were made from chunks of large wood branches pegged together with slabs of berle wood for the tops, and I also have a medieval style bench made from a rough wood plank (sanded smooth) and a pair of supports with a cross brace (it also has holes drilled for a cribbage board in the middle of the top). I also have a number of iron candle holders and sconces as well as copper and glass hurricane lamps. To this I have added wooden bowls and trays and various woven wicker baskets, as well as faux fur blankets, throws, and pillows. My couch is a black "iron" futon frame (back, seat, and brace supports) between wood sides/arms that serves me quite well (real easy to dismantle and transport if I have to move), and it keeps within my general iron and wood base aesthetic I have for my furniture. I have other fun little tidbits that vary in anesthetic from Medieval and Renaissance to Victorian and Steampunk.

@LivingAnachronism3 жыл бұрын
I'll look into it, but I'll say right now I can't really suggest anything I haven't personally bought. Actually historical medieval chests might have varied in design as well with some being incredibly ornate, even some might like modern by some standards with their paint etc. My suggestion would be to look in antique or thrift stores for chests unless you really need your chest to be spot on historically accurate towards a specific look. If you just want a wooden chest to help boost your own immersion, I think thrift stores and tag sales are a really good bet.
@edi9892 Жыл бұрын
I bet that draping walls and ceilings would greatly change the mood and hide the modern nature of the room itself. I've seen it in an Indian restaurant. From what I know it would be more historically accurate than wooden panels (which were often added later to medieval buildings).

I'm in a bad position financially, stuck in a cramped apartment. But I've done little things here and there. Music helps, but it's important not to neglect silence. In trying to escape from modernity, it's easy to replace one unhealthy dopamine loop with a different one. Silence, learning to simply live in the moment, will help to immerse one in the experience of life. Be it meditation or merely moment of reflection here and there, it will contribute greatly to one's mental health.

If it comes to clay, you can actually buy it, it's not expensive, because some workshops offer a "Co-burning service", so you pay them a fee (this is where the money comes in, burning is not cheap) and for that, they do your ceramics. Now you can craft whatever thing you want made from clay! (usually, you need two steps, the biscuit firing, after which you apply glaze and then the glaze firing. It's not harmful if you read a bit about working with clay. It dries if left in the air, so keep plastic + damp [not wet!] rags around it till you're finished.) OR you can even buy blanks of cups and so on and ask the workshop owner if they share their glazes (if not, you can buy them, again not super expensive) and make your very own cup and so on. It's so cool! You have to match the glaze to the temperature of your glaze firing though! Ask the workshop owner about that. Now go, my fellow fantasy medieval atmosphere fans, create the things of your dreams and send me happy thoughts if you liked it. Also, very neat plants in these Videos 😄🌿 (am a bit enthusiastic about plants ...)

My father says cozy or ancient room is not good for health 🙄 the reason is it creates humidity and thus invites organisms 🙄🙄🙄 I don't think so, my room is designed by me completely, still more to be done, your video helped a lot , thanks 💜

This might just be how country I am buuuuut my childhood and now into my adult life this is how my home for the most part has always looked especially with furs and rustic wood candles literally all of it lol. Hell I wouldn't own a tv or computer if my wife didn't want them. But ya I think a lot of folks do this not shoot for midevil but a rustic west look the two just look very similar.

Your home sounds lovely. This is why I think anachronism works, because it's mostly about the cozy, rustic homey feel for me, but a lot of this coulr work for any time period.

@@LivingAnachronism Honestly most folks that I know have homes like this. I went on zillow and looked at home for a bit and it was that in my 30s and didn't know folks liked shiny metal and white so much lol.

Would you do some tips on making or buying gloves that would be fitting? It's winter and I've been wearing my cloak for warmth out and about and I'd love to add some gloves! Maybe if possible different levels of gloves?
@LivingAnachronism2 жыл бұрын
I do have a video on gloves already on the channel, it's not exhaustive, but it is a quick project. In terms of warmth, get something knitted. Fur lined gloves are historical, but rare.

Like the guy who turned his living room into the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, only for a medieval home.

What do you reccomend to do with walls? I have peachy pink walls currently, and I wanted to paint them brown or beige for the wood aesthetic, but I thought it would look too modern and minimalist if you know what I mean. Everybody seems to want the desaturated beiges and neutral greys. So any suggestions? Also are there any reputable fur or faux fur sites anybody knows?
@LivingAnachronism2 жыл бұрын
Hi Milana. Fur or faux fur? Not entirely sure. There are big box options, like Tandy Leather, IKEA of Bed Bath and Beyond might have some faux furs. Depending on where you live you might want to look at a local fair, there might be some hunters with a stall. There are lots of smaller sites that sell their own fur products, but I haven't had enough experience with any to recommend them. My "Renaissance fair haul" video might be helpful and does have a few links. As for walls, to depends what you really want. The medieval "aesthetic" to the modern eye is very different to what the actual interiors of a medieval castle were: white washed and painted. You could consider hanging tapestries about (or even furs once you find them). I am partial to the tudor look, wattle and daub, with the white or off-white walls and exposed heavy timbers. I think you may find that hanging things up will give you a quicker result and more closely look like what you want, than if you simply repaint a different color.

Happy to say I finally bought myself faux fur, a throw and a rug. Everytime it feels like I'm a medival lord thinking about how the kingdom with survive the winter. 😩 The ones I bought were from Mon Chatau. I'm so happy now
