Well I guess the whole point of the joke is that the guy isn’t a legit medium, he just „conjures“ „spirits“ of people that are so totally indefinite anyone could recognise them as their distant acquaintances

Honestly if a medium actually did this, I'd actually give thought on saying it's fake right away. Literally no one has the courage to do something so insignificant -- they look for dead parents and missing children, not your second cousin's great aunt who passed away on the toilet. One of the most stronger points of the Onion is the cast they almost never feel like comedians, here are not a JIm Carrey or Jamie Foxx acting all over the top, they play theyr role completely normal and serious wich make the script even better The only other show i can think of with similar good casting is the Chapelle show all actor feel like real people
