I'm from Chicago. Just a few nights ago me and my friend we're standing outside talking. A car slowed down a bit and looked over at us then went around the corner right over on South Chicago. Soon after gunshots rang off, then soon after that 5 squad cars raced down that way also. Just something as simple as talking to you friend outside could turn into a deadly encounter.

At some point the news is wasting time that could be spent improving my own consciousness. It is said that as air carries aroma, consciousness carries the soul. Air may continually carry the fragrance of a rose garden, as it passes, and the same air can carry the foul smell of gunpowder and dead innocent people. We're not meant to stay in bad consciousness, although it is just as much part of this mortal world as enlightened thinking. But humans get to use their facility of human form as they choose, and reap what we sow.

I'm from the Southside of Chicago. Even if you go to the "better" neighborhoods there is still so much violence. I remember growing up in a neighborhood that is not the best but not the worst. When I would walk home sometimes there would be gun shots from nearby. You would have to watch some of the colors that you wore to make sure that they weren't gang colors. Many people I know are in gangs and/or sell guns and drugs. Family members in and out of jail. There are so many other things like gruesome murders right around the corner and people shooting each other right in front of my house. It's insane. I'm just glad I never got caught up in anything like that.

Agreed. I was born in Chicago in 86, and have lived here all my life. I spent the first 10 to 15 years of my life by North Avenue. It's really not that bad of a neighborhood compared to many other places in the city that are like war zones. But there's still people getting shot, slinging dope, and all the rest, every single day. It's just sad when everyone you know has been shot or knows someone who's been shot. Every body has buried some one by the time they get outta grade school. This shouldn't be normal for any of us. But it is normal for us. It's hard, and it's sad.

1000 gunshot victims in 2017??? That is insanity. I live in Toronto, same size city, only in a different country. As of today there have been 19 murders, of which 15 involved a gun. Unbelievable America. That is a monumental fail on every level. There's enough blame to go around the table two times.
@kevinn11587 жыл бұрын
Chanler, I absolutely agree. Everybody needs to take ownership of these problems regardless of the number of murders or the targets. We have public housing close to our home and when the politicians decided to rebuild the public housing I was one of the first to get involved. I believe in standing up for everybody. i.e. safe communities for everyone. Fight against ghettoization. If our American friends think it's not their problem because they live in the suburbs, take a look at how much it costs in your tax dollars incarcerating criminals. I bet you could help rebuild every house in these ghettos and train the local kids to have skilled jobs than dealing with this carnage. Unfortunately, in these American cities, the people with money are physically so far away it's easy for them to think it's not their problem.
@kevinn11587 жыл бұрын
Hey Chanler, Breaking up the Chicago public housing was the only way to go. People inside that community need to integrate into diverse communities. Scattered housing is only the first small step in a very long process of reintegrating a community forced to the edges of society. If they didn't arrange long term help (i.e. big brothers, social workers, basic job training) yes the gangs remain gangs. All of these public housing ghettos are wrong and were neglected for 50 years. You're not going to change the mindset of people overnight. Chicago did the right thing but maybe they didn't have a plan to help these gang members move on in their lives. This video reveals the fundamental philosophy of these gang members, eye for an eye...but I guess they didn't read the whole phrase which is "An eye-for-eye and tooth-for-tooth would lead to a world of the blind and toothless."
@kevinn11587 жыл бұрын
Chanler, these place weren't just fortresses, they set up the community so vulnerable low income kids were only meeting each other. They banded together and the gangs morphed out of high density low income ghettos. There was a small program for disadvantaged kids near our local public housing run by an ex gang member. This guy was awesome. He was a big brother to all the kids and they loved hanging out with him. He was cool, he gave them his time and love but he was also tough and had expectations of them. No BS. The best part of this was he wasn't an "outsider". He's paid a regular wage and did the job of 20 social workers imo.
@kevinn11587 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, iTz Axis, stop making excuses, people like you are a big part of the problem. I've heard every excuse in the book. The reality is, these gang members just gave up and didn't want to take responsibility for their lives. They picked up a gun because that was the easiest way to gain control over their lives...become powerful, not realizing what kind of world that comes along with it. They bought into America's perverse belief that the gun is the ultimate solution for any conflict. Didn't work out that well did it? The inner city black community got screwed and instead of banding together to support each other they picked up a gun to shoot each other.
@kevinn11587 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you that in Toronto the gunshot victim and the deaths by guns is within a dozen.... Meaning on average there are between 40 & 50 deaths by gun and maybe 60 gunshot victims who survive.

Okay I'm from Chicago lived there for 7 years of my early life and I'm black. I lived in the north side and i have seen the south side and let me tell you it's crazy. Kids coming up to you saying "can I please have food my dada in jail" "Can I have a place to sleep my momma got shot" it's horrible and you know why this whole gang violence cycle keeps repeating, when they learn at a early age Hey look at those people stealing let me try or oh my friend started drugs and she is feeling better they try to do that and end up in jail or dead. The cycle repeats with there children have you heard of this saying "You either get famous or you die trying" that's very true in South Chicago. Instead of North Chicago putting money into the youth's that live there so they have a better life they put the money to our beautiful sky scrapers and our big statues. Yet really if we want a change we need to start with the kids because the kids are the future. I live in Illinois still but in a nicer place but I still think we should help those that don't have my, yours, our opportunities

Watching this video has opened my eyes as to the underlying issue no only in chicago but everywhere that are facing this same issue. There is a conflict of interest between "community leaders" that are only in it for themselves, and those who legitimately want things to get and be better than all the senseless killings and deaths that happen every day. It would be nice if some would quit trying to put their name out there just to get rich at the expense of their neighbors.
