Shauna x Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have optioned the Carley Fortune Novel Meet Me At The Lake with the view to making a romantic movie for Netflix.
In this video, I share my impressions after reading the book carefully! This led to many interesting insights and some quite strange observations.
Many people wonder if it is just a telling of Meghan and Harry's early romance but it is a lot more layered than that!

Very well said . Thats what I though . They say its the sort of book you take to the beach to pass the time and read a little at time . I wont be buying the book or watching the movie . Boycotted all companies financially supporting the harkles .

I think this book was actually written for Megan. She talked about making a romantic movie quite awhile ago during an interview. Very suspect. 🇺🇲

@@tamarharris9611 Carley Fortune is only recently a WME client for film and TV - clearly for this Netflix deal. She has a different literary agent and a publisher. This will be her second #1 best selling book. An author would never allow their name to put on someone else's book nor is Meghan a ghost writer. The suggestion is ludicrous for an author who has hit the best sellers list twice within a year.

Thank you so much for reviewing this book. I had a hunch but now it's my firm opinion that is this will be just a 'reimagination of their love story' Just how much naval gazing can one couple do?! I didn't think it was humanly possible to have such little self-reflection!

No it's not even that! The marketing spiels were a reimagination of a re-engineered plot of a book about a Meghan-type female protagonist. Shauna said that the male protagonist isn't even anything reminiscent of H! And mind you, when I heard the synopsis (skeletal synopsis, may I add) in the puff pieces, I was already thinking Hallmark Movies and Harlequin Romance! 😂 Confirmed!!! 😎

Apparently..same publisher as Harry..she is a fan...and Netflix bought it and allegedly she is repped by WME as well...hmm very coincidental..they figure to save Harkles face....who will write and act in it scabs...even if filmed in Canada if done by major studio which Netflix is cause many problems with unions....TW is being called out not supporting SAG...

The 2 fern fronds joined at the center in the book refers to the 2 palm trees joined at the bottom in H&M's estate. Meghan mentions this in one or more interviews. Harry said ¨My love, it's us¨ and every time Archie goes by the trees, he says, hi momma, hi papa. There is nothing subtle about all the references in the book.

Meghan sees her life through the lens of a Hallmark movie. The leading lady's virtue is demonstrated by how much her love interest will sacrifice to fight for her. She is not the Diana figure, the dutiful wife with a broken heart, she is the temptress for whom the pining prince betrays everyone who ever loved him. Enjoyed your review.

If I was a friend to Meghan (heaven forbid!) I would have advised her to make a deal with Hallmark. Hallmark would have loved to have her and probably created a whole series around Meghan. That being said although I really love Hallmark movies, I know they aren’t high art but appropriate for Meghan’s level of “talent”.

MM likely provided the VERY dated pop-culture references, just like the VERY dated (trite, boring) pop-culture references in Archetypes. Surprised she didn't do the ice bucket challenge or Tide pods. Why is she always decades out of date? I cannot think of another celebrity who is SO far out of touch with cultural reality.

The author is a Harry and Meghan fan...writing many pro-Sussex articles in Toronto. My theory is Meghan knew of the author and they co-created this book. The male lead is Will and your description of him made me think of the Prince of Wales. Sounds like a run of the mill Hallmark movie to me. Now I will continue to listen to you!

Great review! The Harkles 'love story' in Toronto was humping while Corey was at work, not really enough to fill a feature film. Also, it would be hilarious if it turns out that Carley Fortune was the actual writer/blogger behind the 'Tig' as a part of some kind of 'operation' .... 🤣

I loved this review! It was honest and hilarious! You’re spot on when you say that the narrative dripped of The Tig 🤢 I’m not surprised Harry wasn’t featured, because in Meghan Markle’s mind, she’s the Center of her Universe. I just bought the book by Angela Kelly the dear late Queen's dresser, I think that is worth reading from her humble beginnings to catching the Queen's eye and her loyalty to the Queen. The clothes and colour photos are lovely.

Absolutely brilliant review of the characters in the book. I believe the overall reviews were poor and it didn’t live up to the author’s previous novel. Just heard that the gossip from Hollywood is that Netflix bought the rights and not the Sussex’s. I do wonder if Meghan had a hand in the storyline as the pieces you read out are so, so Meghan.

Hey Shauna, it is funny that you referred to this book's adaptation as a Hallmark movie, because that is exacty what I thought when they announced that they optioned that book. I didn't know anything about the story but I knew that is the type of thing M would do. As for Harry, he does what he is told and also he doesn't read so he has no idea of what is going on.

You are giving Harry way to much credit, I don't believe he had anything to do with this. It was Penguin House and Netflix who did this deal, trying to save the Harkles, and then Markle's PR team got to work, putting out puff pieces, in the hope more books will sell, and try desperately to make them look respectable in Hollywood. But thanks to the strike, that could go on until next year, this may never happen. Let's all hope and pray.

The sequels were just dreadful, but sales were still good due to people's expectations. Sometimes I wonder if this is all publishers care about.,

Well guys, it is almost 10am EST in the US and some of you may have found from listening to other channels that the story was loosely based on Harry & his wife's love story, written by a popular Young Adult genre author who is a fan of H&HW. If the male lover doesn't sound like Harry then I suppose his wife told the author that she was torn between the Prince and the Chef and has come to realize that the Chef is her one true love, (ala Harry & Chelsey Davey?). The author was (allegedly) approached to write the book knowing that they were buying it. I'm not judging the author for making money this way at all, although I do judge HER judgement of H'sW, but, let's face it, from everything we ever heard about her, she love bombs people she needs until she doesn't need them anymore. I'm sorry to sound so jaded but once you've learned the tactics and tools of public relations firms it's pretty easy to detect the spin. H&HW simply refuse to be honest, they only seem to care about themselves and the endless smoke and mirrors has caused the public to become resentful.

Here is all that I have picked up about the book so far... it was supposedly written for H&M but not necessarily about them, just a story that would 'resonate' with them,,, Carley the writer and H&M have the same PR people and Spare and 'meet me..' are both published at Random House. Carley is said to be a fan of the couple, Lord only knows why.... I'm hearing conflicting things about the amount paid for the movie rights... some saying that it was cheap at 3 million with people questioning why someone would sell a best seller rights so cheap and other saying they got ripped off at 3 million as thats a lot to pay.... Not having 3 million or even been given 3 million for anything I've doodled on a napkin, I have no idea which version is right lol... Thanks again! Not sure how the others would feel but I'd love to hear your thoughts on some of the classics... idk maybe a classic a week "to kill a mockingbird', 'catcher in the rye' and an obscure book you may not have read, but I loved 'dinner at the homesick restaurant'?

re: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant - I loved almost all Anne Tyler's books and the others I liked well enough. "The Accidental Tourist" was turned into an Oscar nominated movie. More humor in the book than the movie, but few Hollywood directors are good at that type of humor.

Thank you for the great book review! You've saved me from wasting my hard earned money on a book I would ultimately detest. And I'll miss the movie version deliberately as well. The book already littered with Meghan's Lexicon , it even has a whiff of the Working Actress blog for good measure. It's a shame really Fern wasn't a white-passing biracial woman , that would've given the game away 😒 From the bottom of my heart thank you for reviewing that book, and good luck to Netflix turning that pile of hot mess into a screenplay - I can predict Scarlett Lacey taking on the job of producing it, she was handed the script by Meghan for three previous movies she made about her so why not add a fourth sickly sugary movie to the mix eh ? I would have advised them to take heed following the Spotify flopodcast but who am I to spoil the fun of watching a train wreck in slow mo ? 🇬🇧 ♥

When you commented that about the tort…..“pretentious, out of date, boring”, I couldn’t help seeing the similarities of Meghan! Almost completely describes her. 😂. Interestingly enough, Megs and the author have a bit of a relationship! The author also worked for WME right before she wrote the book. I do believe this was Megs idea for the author to write this!!!

Great analysis. I agree with you that it sounds as if Mrs. Harkle commissioned this book. They named the male lead "Will," the main character's last name is Brookbank, (much like Eugenie's husband,) and her is short and blond,(like Diana.) I wondered if she planned to star in the movie and had the cover changed. I know this, Harry didn't read the book.

Thank you for your reading and reporting of the novel. I hope that the Harkles involvement doesn't derail the author's career. (Sometimes that spotlight can burn.) M always wanted to be hired by Hallmark. Some of her Suits castmates landed roles in Hallmark movies (Sarah Rafferty was quite good in her roles!) as their movies were filmed in Vancouver, and on a schedule that dovetailed with Suits' sabbaticals. M's IMDB reveals she was in two Hallmark movies. Perhaps the purchase of the filming rights for this novel was a was for M to allude to being Hallmark Crown material? It was rumored she tried many years, audutiond, to land a Hallmark role. Your seeing the Hallmark brand in the plot is quite revealing because it suits their story criteria to a T.

They would never buy the rights to a book if they didn’t know the storyline. They had to know what was in there to assess if it would translate to film.

That was a really good, fair and even review, thank you! A few thoughts of my own... 1. The reported 3million may include the author's rewrites and/or may include her as a part of the screen writing process. 2. The 3million may already include a screen adaptation. 3. It may include the author being on hand as a consultant during production. I agree the price is overinflated. 4. If the author did write for the Tig maybe the 3 million is HUSH MONEY for not exposing that she did write for the Tig. I think you are fabulous and I always appreciate your insights. I read a lot and I agree on the similarities with the Tig.
