American media needs to calm down and stop making it seem like all their athletes are the absolute pioneers of the sport. It doesn't do any good to both the athlete and the misled fans who are being kept in the shadows about the other fantastic, skilled and trailblazer skaters before them. They made it sound like it was Chen on top the whole and failed to cover the excitement following all the new and 'older' generation skaters going toe-to-toe like Uno, Chan, Jin, Hanyu and Fernandez. The whole lead up no one had a sure way of even putting together their ideal competition because we all knew so many of them were so talented, and if skated clean, all had a shot at podium positions. If you want someone to talk about artistry and athleticism, it should be Yuzuru Hanyu of all people. Grace, elegance, power, technique, skating skills- he's the whole package. Hoping the american media will attempt to give a more open coverage of the figure skating sport as a whole and not just through the lens of their American Olympic team.

Chloe Sparks Yuzu has broken the world record many times, and he's the current olympic champion. You just can't put a kid, even with those 5 quads, against that man. It is really unfair how much pressure they put him under. Hope he recovers and do a clean program tonight. He is pretty young, there's a lot of growing to do.

I feel terrible for Nathan, he looked so devastated. It was so heart wrenching to watch him struggle, and place 17th after his short program. These people have just put too much pressure on this 18 year old kid, calling him the best skater in the world and the quad king. He has only been on the world stage ONE TIME and the Olympics can be even more intimidating than the world competitions, even for the very experienced and the most talented figure skaters in the world. He is a very talented figure skater, one of the best I have ever seen. The fall he had in the team event, was the first time I had ever seen him faulter. He is not the first great skater to fall apart at the Olympic games from the overwhelming pressure everyone, including the media puts on a person. 2022 will be here before you know it. Stay strong Nathan you are very young and this is only your first Olympic games.

Exactly. All his victories this season didn't exactly prepare him for top level competition (patrick, javi, yuzu, boyang were out of the gpf and nationals was a piece of cake for him). He bombed worlds last year too so i'm guessing its due to his nerves, which were unhelpfully added on to this time round by the media and Yuzuru's clean skate. Oh and inb4 people saying that Yuna and Yuzuru had to deal with the same pressure, they were considerably protected from the media, and everyone handles stress differently. Raf needs to learn from Borser on how to manage his skaters psychologically.

He couldn’t live up to his own hype. I think that anyone can fail, especially with that much pressure. We’ve seen it time and time again, where they give the best performance of their life prior to the Olympics, then fail miserably once they get there. I think a lot of it is just mental concentration and stamina. They have to nail everything every time and it’s too much. And they have only one shot. Quads are also incredibly difficult to do, and that coupled with everyone demanding perfection from him proved to be his undoing.

Amanda Faries The real Nathan Chen just showed up at the Olympics and redeemed himself by performing 6 quads in his free skate. With the huge score in his free skate he could still possibly end up on the podium.

Linda Sturm I understand it is just a setback for him, but he's being followed so closely in the media. I'm not saying he can't medal, he's an outstanding skater, but I wouldn't want to be him right now because every mistake he makes is blown out of proportion because other people have set the bar SO HIGH for him

I've noticed American media focuses more on their own figure skaters and don't care about anyone else, and since these companies dominate the news we know Tonya Harding's name instead of Midori Ito and soon will know Nathan Chen instead of Yuzuru Hanyu. Midori landed the first triple axel in competition ever, so why do most people know Tonya instead of her? Even if you knew Tonya's name as the first AMERICAN woman to land it most still don't know Midori's. Nonamerican celebrities, companies, athletes have to work twice as hard to get half as much 🤦🏽

What’s wrong with American media talking about American athletes? Go watch Japanese media talking about Japanese athletes if you’re so pressed. Don’t use the word “instead”. American media are of no obligation to make videos like this for non-American athletes. Let countries hype up their athletes, it’s not a crime. I agree with what you said about Tonya and Midori, but Tonya can’t even be compared to Nathan and his success. He’s literally has won every competition he’s been in for the last two years, meaning he’s beaten Yuzuru several times, don’t act like he doesn’t deserve media attention.

Actually Jason Brown is more artistic than Nathan Chen . Jason Brown was the one that uses artistry with his choreography. Chen is more athletic, but he has shown sone typical form of techniques that most male figure skaters of yesterday uses.

Come on guys the pressure on Nathan was not only because of the age but because of the quads, you didn't watch this video? It's just crazy to jump a quad? And in the olympics, his fs had 6 quads, so imagine what could be passing through his head. And come on, Yuzuru and Javier haven't had this on their programs. If you are really fans of those guys, study more. Nathan is the quad king because is the only one who has landed 5 different kind of quads cleanly in a program, and some of those guys you mentioned haven't attempted all five in only one program, so stop it with you bad comments. I'm here 4 years later because I discovered him at the Beijing 2022 Olympics and he did it excellent, his program was breathtaking so I decided to investigate everything about him,so I confidently can tell you that he is the best and Yuzuru had to add a 4A attempt to his program because his programs didn't have the highest level that Nathan programs have, so this was the only way he could attempt to win him. And If you are Yuzu fan you must knos that Yuzuru has been following Nathan closely since Nathan was a novice and junior competitor and many years later he started trying or at least thinking on taking ballet classes because He realized that Nathan had ballet classes too, so under these terms, as Yuzuru has accepted, he respects and admires NAthan too, as much as NAthan admires Yuzuru too. Both are amazing and there are no reasons to speak badly.

Overhype or not, he was clearly not ready for the Olympic Ice this year. Skating right after Yuzuru didn't exactly help either, that was the worst draw he could've possibly landed.

Hanyu won the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi when he was just 19 years old, 2 months after his birthday, believed it was his first olympic competition too. Nathan skated his first this 2018 at 18 years old. You can never say if a skater would win against himself, his own mind, at every competition. Every athlete has some kind of pressure, no matter how big.. it's still a force. Hanyu, for example as almost everyone compares Chen to him, couldn't skate like he wanted because of his ankle injury 4 months prior. He didn't even know if he could move his feet or skate in time for the Olympics. He also carried his entire nation's pride since 2014 at that event on top of defending his gold title mind you. You either win it at your best or at your worst. Chen went through his too, just like everyone else. He did great at the last cup, but didn't follow through this time.. It happens.

More pressure was on Yuzuru, because of fans and TV, even though his leg is broken. He also experienced heavy pressure in Sochi, when he was 19. Pressure cannot be the excuse in Olympic game, and overcoming pressure is the part of game too.

Just becs Yuzuru loves to win, doesn't mean there are not immense pressures. Japan had much more hype around Yuzuru for years compared to Nathan, Yuzuru is literally voted as the most loved athlete in Japan. Yuzuru himself even said he doesn't like the false reports, and too much attention, to the point he feel like he is confusing his identity as an athlete, he said the only place for him to have a place to himself is the rink. I doubt Nathan had the amount of pressure Yuzuru was facing. Especially when Yuzuru had to defend his title while on painkillers at the Olympics.

Lol the American media acts as if all the other top figure skaters and world champions haven't been able to balance athleticism and artistry for years. Just because he's young and added another jump to get points doesn't mean that he's the best skater by any means. Even without the extra quad, Yuzuru Hanyu holds the world record score for both SP and FS, demonstrating how amazing (and better) he is in combining athleticism and artistry. Sure Nathan is good and has a promising future, but you guys need to turn down the hype and not be rude to the actual international champions (Yuzu, Javi, Shoma, Jin, etc).

I dont get where the whole "Nathan strong competitor for olympics" came from, he is just a kid, and yes, Yuzuru was just a kid too, but Yuzuru is special, and we all now that. The media try to put it "Hanyu vs. Nathan" forgetting all the other strong competitors, forgetting Than Nathan didnt even have a world medal, who had just win Yuzuru once, forgetting about Javier (who had won him more than once), Shoma (japan's second best and strong competitor, Bojang (who is also strong, that quad lutz...I mean even Yuzuru praise him)...if the US media would have a little less ego everything would have ended well for Nathan, putting presure of someone like that, shame on them

Nathan was a gold medal candidate who had won against Yuzuru twice. If the U.S. Media did not hype Nathan, I doubt his result would have been well. He is known to fail when pressure arrives. See Worlds 2017.

This is the reason I believe Yuzuru Hanyu deserves to win. He's not perfect, but he did everything he could to make it look beautiful and natural. Not giving hate to Nathan, but being perfect is literally the worst thing you can do, when you think that nothing is enough so you do everything until you hurt yourself.

Probably you misunderstand something, judges qualify everything, every single aspect of a program, and Nathan is very inspiring in the artistically part, as they were explaining in the video, because he took ballet classes for years, which helped him with the lines etc, but also to feel the music and show his artistic side thanks to the ballet, so he is an athlete very complete, because of the gymnastics and ballet. Besides that, the people in the video are professionals and they said that he consistently attempts more quads than his closest rivals but in base to a deep investigation, not on what they think. Now 4 years later this fact is more clear to averyone, unless they don't want to recognize this fact, this could be another thing.

Nathan has a lot of potential but there is way more to skating than jumps, there is also transitions, skating skills etc... there are many who would disagree with you and are much less biased. I love Nathan's performance because his art was perfectly matching to the music. Hand gestures and everything was perfect and without the femininity that Yuzuru seem to have too much of. Yuzuru's style seems more modern. Nathan brings ballet art into his figure skating. His free skate was the best, in my opinion.

I appreciate what Nathan is trying to do, but the title I absolutely not agreeing with. Artistry..? No, Nathan does not have much artistry, not much transition or complex step sequence, expressive movements. He is literally just jumping. American media have been showing off Nathan, who successfully landed 5 quads in 4CC, prior to SP yesterday. Calling him Quad King, best Skater, the most likely to get gold and so on. You know, they portrayed him as if Nathan Chen is unbeatable. I'm not his fans, but feeling sad for him to be put on pressure that much. On the other side also feeling annoyed with how American medias implied that jump the main events of figure skating (of course it is important, but not the only one) and artistry is just some additional way to raise points. Now after he messed up all his jumps, it's clear that Nathan doesn't have anything any weapon to fight beside his jumps. His jumps were not enough to be called artistry. It's nowhere near perfect. If you want to said athleticism to artistry, then best to list the veterans such as Hanyu, Fernandez or even Chan. They were not a jumping machine but they jump with art.

It's too bad that you actually cant see the difference in quality between their skating skills. If Fernandez or Hanyu fell on all their jump, they will still score higher than Chen (just look the released details scores and you will see). I'm not saying that Nathan Chen is not talented. He's sure a very talented skater, but still lack in quality. Even Shoma Uno, who won silver said that he himself lack in quality and i despite being uno's fan also agree with him. I really try to see the artistry within his jumps but i just cant, i even though that vincent zhou did better on that. They could called him jump machine and so on, but definitely not 'artistry'. I dont know what kind of approach he will take in the future. But just jumping as much as he cant will not justify anything

If Hanyu or Fernandez somehow fell on their jumps, their artistry still can back them up, and they still can get a high rank. Nathan has nothing to back him up beside jump, jump and another jumps. He fail the jumps, he gonna slide way down the rank because there's nothing to back him up, especially the component scores. He has less transition between the jumps, the step sequences aren't that great. He focus more on jumps. Only that can bring him to the podium. He done 6 quads to get back to the top while Hanyu only need 2 quads to get to top based on previous competition. So your point is? Nathan is young and he has the time to improve more. But give credit where it is due. If you know about figure skating component, you will not be saying "he has more than jumps"

It's only because he doesn't add quads that he hasn't perfected yet, meaning steps before it and can be used in combo, that he hasn't yet added 5 quads to his program. Other skaters, including Chen, add quads that they haven't mastered yet to their program. And no steps before a single jump should get negative GOE's, but these skaters still get positive GOE's. Think of this: Yuzu, with steps before his jump, difficult entry, good running edge, in time with music, no pre-rotation, correct edge, gets a +3 GOE. Other skaters perform a quad, no steps preceding it, with pre-rotation, wrong edge, also get a +3 GOE. Huh.

He's not quite there yet, but with every competition he is growing and expanding his skills (and not just in jumping). Nathan has the potential to be so much more than just an 'Olympic Year Special', he could become truly great in this sport. Comparing him at this point (2018) to Yuzuru who is already a world wide legend by the 2018 Olympics does a disservice to them both. I look forward to seeing what he'll bring to the skating world this season and hopefully many more seasons to come.

lol when you have to skate right after king yuzu and he was 1 point short from the world record... I suspected that Nathan was gonna crumble. The advantage now is that the pressure is off his back. This could be good though because the top skaters might crumble during the free, and if he lands all those quads he might have a shot a medal at least. Carlos Cordero true. yuzu is honestly in a battle with himself. i have to admit going after yuzuru does put pressure on you. but even if nathan did perform before yuzu and even if he didnt crumble and did his program perfectly. his choreography was not balanced and Yuzuru would still be at first because yuzuru is on a level of his own. nathan kept being compared to yuzuru but in the end yuzuru can only be compared to himself woth his level of artistic skill and balance

Exactly. Nathan is still a work in progress. He has improved a lot, but Yuzu is just doing his own thing. Whenever I saw that Yuzu was gonna skate right before nathan, I knew that it was it for nathan. Olympic pressure, and skating after hearing those scores must put a lot of pressure on you. He was the only who messed up in his group though. Everyone else kept their head cool.

Yes he has, but he has skated right after a bad Yuzuru. Yuzuru messed up his short at rostelecom cup. Nathan didnt have the same pressure becasue Yuzuru just didnt perform well, and it was just a grand prix stage. There is a huge difference between watching your adversary fail before it is your turn to skate, than watching him being 1 point short of the olympic record. The same thing happened at worlds last year. Yuzuru messed up the short program, and then skated first in the FS and set the whole rink on fire with a new world record. After he skated, the rest started to fall appart including Nathan. I am not sorry to say it, but he screwed up. No need to make any excuses for him. He has all the resources to be on top, but he faltered. and it wasnt a slip or just a shaky program, the whole thing was a brutal mess. But guess what? he is owning up to his mistakes, and he is trying to move forward. All he has to do is skate his best in the FS and hope for the best. Was he not ready to be a champion? Nah, that is so not true. He was been crashing everyone around him with his programs. He was ready.

Idk why ppl go about saying Yuzu is only about artistry. Like haven't ppl seen the height he jumps for his 3As. He has so much power and athleticism too. But he has perfected the lines of all his movements that it looks soo effortless. Tht is why he looks so artistic. Not because he is not artistic. Chen has a long way to go in terms of perfecting his lines. Instead of trying so many quads tht fail he should focus on perfecting few to the point it looks effortless and smooth. The other things is his choreography needs to be more coherent. Instead of looking like fillers between elements, he should focus on making each movement precise and meaningful. I hate to point this out, but historically guys who have needed to put in that many quads in a program are guys who aren't well rounded, don't have good spins or artistry or edges and are basically all jumps. Brian Joubert was the same way. I don't think it's impressive to have 5 quads in a program, I think it's unfortunate. That isn't what figure skating is about. Figure skating is the mix of both sport and art.....and most purists agree that the push for more quads just injures athletes and takes away from what figure skating should be: well-balanced.

He is a really great skater but not the world best as American media paints him to be. Everyone knows he is a great technical skater but lacks in his artistry compared to the top skaters(America still tries to cover up). It is also obvious that he needs those quads in order to even be a contender on the podium and if one of those jumps go wrong, he won’t even be considered. He has been unbeatable this season but I personally believe it was luck and not based on his ability. Even at his best, I believe that he is only on par with Jin Boyang. Skaters like Yuzu, Javi, and Uno are far ahead even based on their personal best scores though they can be inconsistent. But anyways the pressure and the demand are also hefty so better luck to Nathan in the future.

While I do agree that Nathan had too much pressure put on him, I think the same applies to Hanyu as well. Maybe the mainstream American media portraites Nathan as the best, but Hanyu has the same pressure from his country. You don't seem to understand what I meant. I say what I say because I care about him and I want him to win medals, but that will be hard with the pressure media puts on him. Anyone who knows figure skating knows that he wasn't artistically on the same level as Hanyu, Uno etc. That is the truth. His artistic scores are always lower than the others. It's hard to perform when you are 18, it's the first time you're at a big competition like this, and at the same time media have spent weeks trying to make the american people into thinking he have a chance at winning. His personal records are like 20 points away from the winners record. So unless Nathan suddenly got super powers, the odds just weren't there for him to win. I want him to win lots of medals in the future though, and I hope he does, and I think he's capable of it. But if the media continues like this, it will be hard. Media treats him the same as they treated Gracie Gold and Julia Lipnitskaia, two skaters who are now retired at a very young age because the pressure was too much, to the point that they developed mental disorders. I just don't want that to happen to Nathan, okay? So why are you rude to me about it?

It's the US media, which ruin everything, including our presidential election. Sadly the world can laugh. That's why I have to watch euro sport and other languages sometime

Trust the USA media sensationalising this skater who totally lags in skating artistry. Nathan only jumps to score points and when he has a bad day in his jumps he has nothing in his skating
