SAW IT TODAY at Education Week!....It's incredible!....Reminded me of coming home to an empty house after leaving Andrew my last son at the MTC...I was grafting in the tree bawling knowing I wouldn't see Andrew for 2 years. I couldn't graft, climbed down the ladder and knelt on my knees. I told Heavenly Father that I had given him everything I loved and I was all alone....Being divorced, I didn't know how I was going to make it without him...I had a profound thought come to me in that instant...Now you know how I feel! I got back up dried my eyes and carried and knew I could do hard things!

susy q - Me too I got to see it on Thursday at BYU Ed week! It was soooo good. And I got to meet and have my picture taken with the lady who was helping her oldest son prepare to leave on his mission while she told her story (that story made me cry!) He is home from his mission now so shows you how long since they actually filmed it! Thanks for sharing your story of your missionary. It was so inspirational! We took our youngest to the MTC December 16, 2009. My husband was with me but we too had a hard time coming home from dropping him off at the MTC, and even avoided it as long as possible by going to a high school wrestling match. Now nearly 5 years later my husband and I have put in our mission papers! We were told that it usually takes 5-6 weeks for missionary couples to get their call. Today is the 5 week mark so anytime now!

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the green MPAA movie rating screen. So excited that this is going to reach so many people and rectify so many misconceptions. LOVED that one of the statements in it was: "This is not a film about theology". That will make it more appealing to those not of the LDS faith and those who have not been taking full advantage of their membership in the Church.

As a non-mormon living in SLC I really hope they show both sides of this church and it's members, not just a bunch of smiling faces pretending mormons are a bunch of happy, accepting, good hearted people. I have never met a more judgemental and rude group of people.

I've already been able to see #meethemormons and it is pretty great! The 6 people you meet in this documentary are regular everyday people. The members are real, authentic, and not too churchy:) I am really excited the world will get to see this :) My husband who is a big church skeptic (even though he is a Mormon) REALLY liked it. I say that makes it a WINNER! Give it a chance and you just might be pleasantly surprised. I am happy to answer any sincere questions anyone may have regarding our Christian faith.

Todd Gak Yes, that's _one_ definition of "propaganda." Mostly, according to Merriam-Websters and many other dictionaries, there is the negative angle to the word meaning to disparage or damage or injure a party. This movie does not do that. (I would like to point out that your post more closely fits this definition of "propaganda.") However, you judge before even seeing the movie, don't you? This is a documentary about six Latter-day Saints, about their lives, and how their faith has strengthened them. It was made strictly to inform how we live and who we are and was made expressly WITHOUT the intent to preach. As a matter of fact, our church missionaries are instructed to not to appear at any theater showing it or to accompany people to watch it. If you've seen any of our "I'm a Mormon" ads, you get the feel for it. Of course, since it seems that you are adverse to our church and probably not going to change your opinion, I'm really writing this for any others who might read your comment. Best wishes to you.

watchin The church has gone to great lengths to whitewash and hide the true history and doctrines of the past. The film is just another method to sidestep the issues it doesn't want to discuss. The theocracy is judged by its words, actions, and attitudes it indoctrinated into its members. These all combine to be the church's own worst enemy and witness. Glossy advertising movies only make the message more fake and hypocritical. The Salt Lake Tribune has seen the movie and reviewed it as an infomercial. I guess their mostly LDS staff is adverse to the church too? Please.

Ryan Winterton " that is one of the reasons it is the most effective charity in the world." [citation needed] The two billion dollar mall that the church built in Salt Lake sure isn't helping the homeless population down the street from it. Also, it's not a documentary. Not a single reviewer thinks so, so far. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/meet_the_mormons/
@RyanWinterton
@RyanWinterton 10 жыл бұрын
Lewis Kim The church didn't build the mall, that was built by a legally separate entity, and that entity never receives tithes or other offerings, it is a business separate in all accounting from the church. The reviewers are far different than the audience rating, which is at 79% approval, and yet really all that matters is that some people enjoy it and find it informative. The church is not trying to be the popular prom queen, otherwise you would see dramatic changes in doctrine to match social trends. Of course there will be negative reviews. You wouldn't expect a republican to give a positive review of a Michael Moore "documentary," would you?

Mason Draper Did you mean josepsmith.net ? It's even in the lesson manuals, see www.lds.org/manual/foundations-of-the-restoration-teacher-manual/lesson-3-the-coming-forth-of-the-book-of-mormon?lang=eng I remember my dad teaching me about the translation process when I was little, and I found it fascinating, and I have had interesting discussions about it at church in gospel doctrine classes as well as elder's quorum classes. Members are free to bring up topics during classes to discuss, and there is nothing taboo in church history. I have never heard something from an anti mormon website that was not found in available church materials that is true, sorry. The crux of the matter is testimony, because I can come to a logical reason for everything said and done by a latter day prophet, to date. And for the times when I haven't understood something immediately, I have patiently waited for the Lord to reveal an answer, and some answers have taken a long time, 3 years for one answer, for example. My faith has been confirmed so many times on so many matters relating to the truth of the church that I will patiently wait for years before my faith is shaken.

(If you want to know more about the Candy Bomber, Google him) Another story about the coach of the Navy Academy Football coach because yes he is a Mormon, It also has the story of a humanitarian, born and raised in Kathmandu,Nepal, an African American LDS Bishop of a Ward in Atlanta, a female kick box fighter from Puerto Rico, and the last story is about a wonderful lady who I did get to meet at the viewing of the movie during BYU Education Week. Dustin Petersen What Mormons ( or Catholics, Baptists etc.) BELIEVE is theology. What I was pointing out is that this movie is not about what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teach or what we as Mormons believe. Some of the members of the Church in the movie may say things like, living our religion is important to us or something along that line. But they aren't talking about the (doctrines or theology) of the Church.

Milton Marin if gays can marry, not sure why multiple people can't
@vladdesa
@vladdesa 10 жыл бұрын
You know that if they legalize Polygamy, women can marry more than one man. If its ever legalized (which would be terrible as it would double, if not quadruple the population), they should stack up guidelines such as the wife or husband would have to agree on adding an addition to the marriage or it won't go through, even have psychiatrists come in to make sure there's no fowl play such as a husband or wife forcing their spouse to agree to it. Oh and gay people would be able to marry more than one spouse too. To be honest, the only form of Polygamy humans should have is women married to more than one man to shrink the population as its beginning to get to a point where the Earth won't be able to sustain the population.
@bajatmerc
@bajatmerc 10 жыл бұрын
Judith Jareau what is wrong with you that you think people need psychiatrists to get married? How dependent on others are you to think for yourself? And holy stupid, more men or more women in a marriage does not dictate the population. Read a book or something. Single women have the most kids of any group.
@vladdesa
@vladdesa 10 жыл бұрын
I took Anthropology in University and we did a huge section on Polygamy... One man marries ten women and has four children per wife, that'd equal forty children. If a woman marries ten men and has a child per father, it would take almost ten years to have each child. Yeah, I am so stupid I can't do simple math. Why a psychiatrist? Because many men have abused their wives, even forcing them to agree to marry more than one wife. Having a psychiatrist in there to see if the wife is being abused and being forced into is a perfect reason. If you don't see that, then please avoid marriage. Both husband and wife must love and respect one another.
@bajatmerc
@bajatmerc 10 жыл бұрын
Judith Jareau Anthropology is only good for teaching other people anthropology, it's like a cycle of futility. Yes you are stupid, because you did not account for those other nine women in your second example. You think just because you chose to mention fewer women having kids that then fewer women are having kids? Those other women still have kids lol. The majority of moms since 2000 are single moms lol, think about it. You want to target people with plural marriage as being suspect of crimes? What are you, the KGB?

@RitsychServare
@RitsychServare 10 жыл бұрын
That would be brainwashing someone or indoctrinating them. The Mormon church doesn't do any of that. That would be going against the doctrine of agency. People are FREE to choose to be converted. Even if you start to have some inkling that some things might seem to "make sense" and appeal to your own beliefs, it's still up to you to make the choice to convert.

Hey Dustin, I know you're not a fan, but those "oft-repeated and tired ways" are actually paradigms through which we see the world. To many, they are valued and provide solace and comfort. They are meaningful to me, and I believe them. I share them out of the sincerity of my heart. You are welcome to see the movie or not to see it. You are welcome to participate in our organization or to oppose it. Your money is yours. By all means, donate your money directly to the Red Cross without paying for the production costs of a movie. But don't blame us if we are genuinely excited to share something that we love. =) Feel free to call me blind and ignorant and a sheep after responding to your post. It will just, yet again, reiterate the fact that you disagree with us and don't like what we do. You are welcome to feel that way, and we are grateful for the contrast you provide to us and to the world. Your voice is needed to help others see Mormonism through a different paradigm and ultimately decide for themselves what they want to believe. After all: "By proving contraries, truth is made manifest." - Joseph Smith

Dustin Petersen Dustin, I really appreciate this response. This was thoughtful, kind, well worded, and addresses some very real and important concerns. First, I will examine this statement: "The ONLY pathway to truth is rationality and logic." If I am to assign some arbitrary numerical percentage to this statement based on how I feel about it, I believe in it about 90%. Here's why: It is possible that there can be flaws in logic. Logic only works if you have the proper framework to make conclusions. It is possible to have flaws in logic. A very crude and simple example: Observation: This is a dog. Assumption 1: Dogs are animals. Assumption 2: This is an animal. This logical path works in most cases, except for when you are examining a stuffed animal in the shape of a dog. There are many more things to consider: why isn't that considered a dog if it has all of the outward attributes of a dog? what does it mean to be a living thing? etc. I'd give more, but this isn't a scholarly work, it's a KZbin comment and you are intelligent, so I trust that you will understand the point. =) This, like I said, is a very crude example, and you may think, "No one would ever make that mistake," but human beings, in trying to make sense of the world and in trying to relate to each other using symbols, have flaws in their logic all the time because they are based on false assumptions. Mormons are not exempt from this. Despite that one reservation, I agree with the statement. Ultimately, the only way to learn truth is to do just that: perform a cognitive function, synthesize acquired information, and accept it as truth. It requires a great deal of study, a great deal of effort, and a great deal of time. The cognitive function is reasoning and logic, and proper reasoning requires that we accept the fact that there is room for error. Contrary to popular belief, this is one of the fundamental teachings of Mormonism, as taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Whether or not the vast majority of Mormons use their brains or not - that's debatable. haha! Then again, that could be said about all people. So, that being said, I want to address your question: "If you don't mind... what makes you immediately jump to the 'blind and ignorant and a sheep' defense? If you could overlook that this is a bit tongue-in-cheek... how, exactly, are you not those things? It sounds as though you are wanting to be open to 'contraries' but yet, it seems to me, that you may be letting obedience and faith get in the way of rational thought (instead of supplementing it)." The reason why I jumped to that defense is because I was answering a stereotype with a stereotype. I apologize for doing so, but prior to opening up a civil dialogue as we now have, that's all I had to work with. You started by lumping all mormons together with OUR "oft-repeated and tired ways," assuming that all Mormons in the world repeat them often and in the same, annoying way. Because of the types of people I've encountered in the past who have expressed similar thoughts to yours about my faith, I assumed that there was a possibility that you would, if I responded, be belligerent or upset at me. Therefore, I responded kindly (hoping for the best), and then pointed out a typical response that I would expect from someone who was belligerent - calling me blind, ignorant, or a sheep. I'm grateful that you didn't do that, and responded kindly back to me. =) I am actually very grateful that you asked, "How are you NOT those things?" I would be happy to send you the full story sometime (though conversion stories are your typical Mormon fare ;D I'd be happy to email you or something in a more private setting. If you're interested, send me a private message.) But, in essence, I rejected Mormonism. I was born and raised in the Church, and i started to question it. So I rejected the concept of prophets, I rejected the concept of personal revelation, I rejected the idea of the Book of Mormon, etc. I had many questions: is it true that prophets speak with God? Seems kind of ridiculous. Is this "burning in my bosom" really communication from God? Or is it a placebo effect and a response to mass hysteria of some kind? I enjoy the Book of Mormon for a variety of literary reasons, but is it really something to pattern my life around? Are its claims true? I started looking into other religions - Christianity specifically, until I decided to challenge them. Did Jesus Christ actually live? What evidence do we have of his existence? The gospels and translations of scripture - what up with that? So I moved onto Buddhism. And so on and so forth. Eventually, I reached the point of Atheism. Logically, if God is a god of Truth, there cannot be multiple truths. If God is a God of love, he would want everyone to have the truth. If God is Good, he would not with hold truth from people. etc. etc. I eventually ruled that there was no God. I had never heard his voice, I had never seen him. I had never had anything other than the "burning in the bosom" so to speak. The only thing keeping me even remotely tied to religion was the fact that when I participated, I felt closer to others. When I prayed, I felt peace. Though the whole concept of God was implausible to me, the practice had its merits. That was it. Religion to me was a coping mechanism for inferior people, and it would be there when one day I became weak and needed it. That was the conclusion I reached. Though I wasn't satisfied. Why? Because I couldn't rule out the existence of God. Because even though I had never had an experience with him, I had never really TRIED to. I had gone to church, I had done all of the traditional things in multiple faiths. But it was always half hearted and exploratory. Never in my life had I attempted to approach the divine MY WAY. So, with one last thing to do, I was going to check this off my list and I was going to move on with life. I had decided that if I got no response from God, I was not going to serve an LDS Mission. I was not going to date Mormon girls. Moderate alcohol consumption would be my thing, I'd drink tea and coffee, and I'd have a lot more time to work on music and to write literature and to do the things I wanted to because I would no longer have to spend all this time finding faith or being religious. Long story short, I approached God, I got a little snarky with him, and I demanded that he speak with me and give me some real answers. If He could talk to Joseph Smith face to face, if he could talk to Enos in the Book of Mormon, if he could appear on mount Sinai, if he could send angels to speak with Mohammed, etc. etc. Why not me? Why would he be so cruel as to ignore me? For the first time, I spoke to him as if he was real, and not a myth. And for the first time, something happened to me. I heard the voice of God. It wasn't my own voice. I didn't see him, but I heard him. And he spoke to me. He lovingly rebuked me. Then he answered all of my questions and explained them. That's it. I'm not a sheep, I'm not blind, I'm not ignorant, because I've done my research. I know about seer stones, I know about hats, I know about folk magic, I know about the criticisms of all christianity, not just Mormonism, I have read and studied and visited chapels and spoken to people. In the end, the more I learned the more I realized I didn't know anything concrete. You can disbelieve it, but I believe it because it happened to me. This was not a subjective experience. It was very objective, and I almost crashed the car I was driving because I heard the voice in the passenger seat. I felt it. It responded. THAT is why I believe. And that experience told me that Jesus was the Christ, and that the Plan of Salvation as taught by the Mormons was correct. Since no one else believes exactly like the Mormons do, the Church I needed to belong to became very clear to me. Since then, I have had many more experiences that have confirmed this experience, and I have experienced a lot. Are Mormons perfect? No. Is it possible that a Catholic or an Atheist can be a better person than a Mormon? You better believe it. Many times that is the case, because frankly some people are "Mormon" on paper only. They don't use their brains, they don't reason, they've never questioned, they are ignorant, they are sheep, and because of that many of them are lazy and apathetic and don't do any good. However, within Mormonism there is a rich intellectual circle. There are bright minds. The kind of people who invent the machine gun and the television and colonize the west and found universities and form world-renowned choirs and found companies and serve in politics etc. etc. etc. Our religion may seem ludicrous, but most of the perceived lunacy comes from 1) failing to realize that we use very different terminology from the rest of the world when trying to describe the exact same ideas and 2) not understanding that pivotal experience that keeps us grounded in the faith. But something about our theology leads those who know it to strive, to sacrifice, and to do great things. Anyway, like I said, I'd be happy to continue speaking with you about the subject. But that is why I believe. That's what I've been through that has led me here. I understand if you don't believe it. You are more than welcome to disagree. But I know what I know because of a complicated combination of a lot of subjective interpretation after a long period of study, and then a sudden, startling objective experience that changed my life forever. I hope you found this helpful. Thank you for letting me reply and for being so kind. =)

No one is SELLING Mormonism. It is simply Christ's restored Church on the earth. You would need to repent to qualify for baptism. Then, we all still make mistakes, so we need to continue to repent on a regular basis. The only thing we get out of converting others is a sense of JOY that we are helping our brothers and sisters back to Christ and our Eternal Father!

But I know that does not mean you are innately kind or good.

I'm proud to be a Mormon, not in a bragging sort of way, but in a very grateful sort of way! I know why I am on this earth and where I am capable of going! What sad creatures you are! The "exmormon" who claimed that the multi-millionaires get paid 6 figures yearly is spreading lies. I know several of the leaders, they get "paid" nothing. Several of them are independently wealthy, because of many years of hard work in the real world, frugality, and wise decisions. They leave behind a lucrative career in most cases when they are called, because of their love of the Lord. The church only covers their traveling expenses as they do a lot of traveling in behalf of the church. I know a leader whose personal belongings have been in storage for over 14 years as they serve the Lord. The concept of paying tithing is early in the Bible, and it literally means a tenth of your earnings. Tithing money is used to run the church, build buildings and Temples where couples and families can be sealed together for all eternity! Missionaries are sent throughout the world to spread the wonderful message! Many of their costs are covered by themselves and their families. The Church does not want the burden on families to be too great, so many of the costs are covered by the Church, but the only pay is in JOY and BLESSINGS! We try very hard to love all of our brothers and sisters, who are ALL God's children, whether they believe it or not, even the hateful ones we TRY to love!

I am a Mormon. I have been reading comment on comment on reply on reply. I have read quotes and haters and those trying to change minds and change hearts. From both believers and non believers. But I give ALL of you this. All of us Mormon know this scripture well, or you should, and I invite everyone to read it for the first time or reread it and understand eachothers hearts. James 1:5-8 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind an tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.... Everyone go see the movie. Dont worry all you that are not Mormon, especially those that think we are some kind of mindless robots or cult. You wont get cooties and you cant "catch" being a Mormon, its not a contagious disease. So go... just watch and see, what have you got to loose? Ignorance maybe? Or even the prejudice that may have tainted your opinion. Just go see and enjoy... :)
