Megumi's morality is a topic that can create quite the discussion between fans of the series if delved into, and in this video I am doing just that. I am diving deep into Megumi's ideals as a jujutsu sorcerer and explaining WHY Megumi Fushiguro is NOT a Good Person

Megumi "We're not heroes of justice, we're Jujutsu sorcerers" Megumi is definetely NOT a good person as he's been shown to constantly care more about those who fit his standards of "good person" than those who don't (Megumi will save someone he considers a good person but he couldn't care less about someone he considers a "bad person") and recently being willing to kill people to save his sister proves he's selfish (a very human trait) Overall, he's a decent person

I mean i dunno about you but I wouldn't wanna save a pedophile or a murderer. i wish more people would have that mindset tbh. Why should we give second chances to trash who kill innocent people. Do the people he's killed get a second chance? Hell no. Because there fucking dead. why should we have to use our tax dollars to pay for these pieces of trash to keep living. rehabilitation is a retarded mindset for these kinda people. if there willing to take the lives of others they should be prepared to take there own lives. sure there are fates worse then death. @@Floridamangaming729 the more and more we understand how our minds work and what sets up the choices we think are conscious choices but hardwired to do so. We will have more and more struggles about punishing those who commit what we deem wrong. When we heard about a person killing our first thoughts are he's scum But when we learn about their childhood, abuses, ect we learn alot of these paths were set up long before they had the ability to do these actions. We understand so little about what makes us do things but we also understand not every action is a choice we make but something programmed. Some are flat out evil people no doubt but their are alot who only got this way because of who raised them or the areas they lived in got them early enough that they truly didn't know another way to live. Like let's look at pedophilia. We all like what we like whether we end up gay, straight, bi, like feet, like boobs or w.e. These are just things in us that make us like things. And unfortunately some people for whatever reason got wired in a way to like kids... Some are because some abuse they suffered as a child that opened the door and others were born that way. Neither is their fault for liking kids.. What is their fault is for taking action on it. But the more we learn the harder it is to condemn them got the attraction and more for the action they took. But like every choice we make.. It's gonna be nuanced on this stuff.

@@Floridamangaming729 Because most of these people weren’t born that way. The systems around them contribute to their actions just as much as their own conscious actions. And if they were born that way in a deterministic sense then someone with your mindset isn’t that far off from the likes of terrible monsters such as Hitler who believed the “degenerates” of the world should be exterminated. With regard to the cost of rehabilitation, it costs more to kill them humanely with injection than it does to keep them in confinement. So long as these people aren’t capable of killing more people, what’s gained from killing them? As you’ve stated, those people they killed aren’t coming back by killing them, so what’s the point? There are of course cases of too far gone individuals, but who decides where that line is drawn? It’s a sorites paradox. We know these too far gone individuals exist but there’s not objective way to determine if someone does or doesn’t belong to this category. So why not at least try to rehabilitate the people that you can? If they were born that way and always were prone for violence and murder then it’s simply a matter of chance that you aren’t one of those people you hate.

The thing I often say is most underrated about Megumi is his Self Awareness. It adds a deeper layer to his character. He is not only a person who doesn’t care about right and wrong but he’s a person SELF AWARE about the fact that he doesn’t care about right or wrong. His morality is very black and white because he never matured past being a small child emotionally. Children see things very black and white; they cannot conceptualize grey areas. That's why childhood trauma get embedded so deep within the psyche. His way of thinking is very common with individuals that had similar experiences growing up. It was the way he coped with being abandoned by his caretakers. A good chance for his moral code to get challenged is being shown how the judgement he places upon people can be, and often are, wrong. His father was a piece of sh*t but he turned out that way from a lifetime of abuse and ostracizing. Tsumiki is a good person but the curse might force her to do immoral things. Something to challenge that inadequate cognitive dissonance. What's a "good person", anyway? To him, people that don't leave him behind.

Megumi isn't a good person, as far the standard definition for "good". However, he is a traumatized young man with a strong sense of justice that borders on suicidal. Though he is in complete denial of his Chronic Hero Syndrome, he is incredibly self aware of every other part of him. He is both selfish and compassionate. He makes mistakes, admits them, seeks to atone for them, yet has never really lost himself to the madness around him. He shows a considerable amount of restraint and distant kindness, all things considered. How pragmatic can a character be? Fushiguro seems pretty honorable in his approach towards how he deals with people and situations. Selfishness does not necessarily equal malice or bad. Arguably, being merciful or kind could also bring undesirable/bad results. Fushiguro is unlikely malicious, but his judgement could fail him. He does try to avoid being naive, he is improving at being courageous, and will be kind or merciful if it serves everybody best from his perspective; even if his judgement and deliberation could potentially be faulty on occasion. Itadori leans towards nativity and foolishness, which could be argued to produce worse results. He looks to be also improving though; I can agree to that. But I believe Fushiguro is more rational and better suited for risk management in contrast to Itadori. P.S: Remember the Golden Rule.

I call megumi a well fleshed out human being, because he does everything a human being would do. Is he perfect? No, he is a product of his environment and is trying to do the best that he can. But at the same time, he does have morals. We also see the same with Yuji, great kid, but is in way over his head and is unintentionally responsible for the deaths of thousands of people. We see that their decision have weight, and how their consequences affect them and the people around them. An I love that about JJK. It does not shy away or beat around the bush, its their in your face and how you interpret it is up to you. The world of jujutsu is not nice. Its harsh, mean, cruel and unless you have power and will, you will get stepped on. Remember when Yuji asked Sukuna for help, Mahito and Sukuna laughed at him and would have no issues with Yuji being killed. Because Yuji himself does not have a will of his own. For the better part of the beginning, its been hammered into him that you have to be sort of crazy to be a sorcerer. An that you can't just go in on someone else's say so. It has to be a choice that you yourself are ok with, despite the regrets and consequences of that choice. He is changing that now due to the experiences he has faced and put himself through. He lost his teacher, his friend lost his hand to Mahito, he damn near died countless times in the terminal arc. But he and megumi still have growing to do and I love this series!

It's interesting because the only characters in the story that have been shown narratively to have moral considerations for what they do are really just Megumi (who says "I will save people unfairly") and Yuji (accepted into the school based on "If I can help prevent people suffering or dying from Sukuna, I want to") and Gojo (whose power and influence is stifled by his very own humanity and moral compass), but Megumi is the only one I remember who judges himself as selfish for his own moral stance, acknowledging his inherent hypocrisy in having the moral stance he does, when 90% of the cast doesn't even take morality into consideration. In a vacuum, if you want to save anyone, even if that's select few, that's a good thing. As a middle schooler, Megumi essentially talked about the social contract, do unto others as you wish to be done unto you, you leave me in peace, I leave you in peace, etc. We usually don't say people who enact self-defense are bad people, even if it results in extreme harm or even death, but Megumi is dead set on believing that despite 1) him wanting to save at least good people (a good thing) 2) attacking those who attack him (a morally neutral thing), he's a selfish person and most certainly doesn't categorize himself as a good person. What Megumi needs to realize is that the world is not white or black, good or bad, everyone is shades of grey. He's not a bad or selfish person, or if he is, then everyone is, including the people he deems good, because we all act with a certain adherence to our own personal beliefs (selfishness, in his eyes), and even good people do bad things, purposefully or inadvertently. It's what makes this situation with Tsumiki potentially very very interesting, not just what lengths he's willing to go for someone who he loves and sees as the quintessential "good person", but what Tsumiki, a person with her own agency, who is neither a good nor bad person (as everyone is), deals with the Culling Game. They hypothesized that in order to swap people out of the game, they'll have to replace them with someone coming into the game (chapter 158 I believe) in order to not contradict the longevity rule, but will somebody like Tsumiki agree to someone innocent coming to take her place so that she's safe? And what effect will that have on Megumi?

Megumi is a good person. But what constitutes "good" has a certain degree of subjectivity. Megumi and Yuji's philosophies are different but I don't think his is necessarily worse. I would agree w him that there was not much point in recovering the body of a dead inmate, and he explains why he wouldn't wanna save the criminal to begin with. As far as saving Yuji goes, yes Yuji can and has caused deaths, but he knows Yuji himself is not at fault for that

In epsiode 22 Fushiguro stays on a pile of bullies just like Sukuna sits on a pile of corpses. I find this oddly foreshadowing. Also Sukuna is a king so someone with some sort of responsability. What if the reason for Sukuna's existence is keep balance in the univers or something and now that he is cornered he the best idea is to find a replacement.

I think Megumi's deviation from the typical shounen character moral compass is what makes him an interesting character. I cannot get into BNHA because of Deku's adherence to the stereotypical shounen character of a "good person". Personally, I see this as wildly unrealistic what with how he almost comically forgives his bully, who suicide baited him. Megumi's fluidity and multi-faceted moral compass and thinking makes him more realistic. No one is always good. Good person or not.

Domain expansion just like sukuna's. The amount of foreshadowing here is massive, there's a theory that sukuna was once regarded as a god feared and respected by a lot of people in the heian era, but fell out with the jujutsu community cuz of some stuff and I really see that happening to megumi, All in all he's my fave character and can't see how he story ends.

Yuji for example, he is content allowing others to die so Yuji can live, nor is he interested in telling Yuji as he worries about how guilty he might feel. Megumi is aware that this is wrong based on normal moral principles. Even his own. But Yuji matters more to him than that. Similar to Nobara. She hands out no empathy to Mai as Mai has attempted to kill Yuji and slandered his name. While, if Mai had not done that, perhaps Nobara would have been sympathetic at the least. Megumi also is willing to curse Kamo as he does the same. Their morals do seem to shift in accordance to Yuji or people they view as close. By definition, he is a selfish person. But, so what? Megumi cares about his friends more than normal people. He knows as a sorcerer his first duty is to kill curses, then protect civilians. They aren’t heroes and attempting to fit them into the rigid box of villain or hero is silly. Jujustu sorcerors follow their own morals and logic - they don’t need to be validated. It’s theirs. If we put cursed trio on a scale of empathy (different to sympathy) and their willingness to save innocents. Yuji, Megumi, Nobara. At the end of the day, if it all came to an edge, all three would pick each other over others. Yuji is extremely selfless, so Nobara and Megumi are selfish for him. But, Yuji would also be selfish in regards of not wanting to let them go. They love each other so much :(

hmm i think yuji is like overly moral, megumi is kind of moral/his morals are less obvious, and then nobara is just straight up lowkey a menace. i like the female main character not being the typical ururaka type beat, but i also like how she's not a nuance-less tsundere.

I kinda disagree, mostly because I think acting upon feelings and not a consistent moral philosophy is the overwhelming norm for most people, many people are also somewhat aware of it, even if they would not say it and Megumi makes such a big point out of it because he is a edgy teenager. We see in the Goodwill Event where killing or not killing Yuji is a major point of discussion that Megumi's opponent Noritoshi is actually motivated by his backstory, his desire to fit in, become family head and elevate his mother is what drives him to the "establishment answer" not really some strong moral beliefs. He also criticises Megumi for holding back while fighting him, despite himself holding back, which Megumi notes when Noritoshi attacks Hanami, adding a additional hypocrisy. Panda outright tells Mechamaru that he does not really get getting hung up on high-concepts. Miwa morally disagrees with killing Yuji, but goes along with the plan, arguably more hypocritical than Megumi who at least tries to stay true to his feelings. Momo is blatantly hypocritical, decrying Jujutsu's society for placing so much emphasis on women's looks, but she herself has internalised this more than anyone and has great pride in her cuteness and judges Nobara and others for how cute they are. Toudou is the worst offender, acting much more flippantly than Megumi, despite having the intelligence to reflect upon his actions and believes and wielding great power, which should give him great responsibility in theory. So the arc that focusses on the morality of saving Yuji has Megumi come off pretty well in comparison with everyone else. I think Megumi could be seen as "Chaotic Good", because he acts on instinct, but his instincts are to help and protect family, friends and people he sees as good. Having a consistent philosophy would be "Lawful Good", but it's not required to be a good person. He is similar to Yuta, who opposed Geto because he attacked his friends not debunking his philosophy, but he still spents all his time helping people, he just does not usually gloat about not being morally consistent like Megumi does. I also think that people with more power are far more easily tempted to do bad things than normal citizens, so Megumi not indulging in things like that despite being a demigod compared to a normal human is laudable. I think many people with his powers would use them to enrich themself or take petty revenge, for example on the delinquents he feuded with as a boy. Especially since being powered by cursed energy incentivises focussing on negative emotions. I think if you gave a average person great powers, the ability to fuel them by focussing on negative feelings and ample opportunity, they would probably abuse it more than Megumi. We also see Megumi go out of his way for ordinary people, like when he visits the mother of one of the victims to inform her. In regards to Reggie's gang, they are literally a violent gang whose leader at least has made a pact with Kenjaku, Megumi tries diplomacy, but they attack him first. I think Megumi made a good-faith effort and was morally justified in what he did, even if he would be tsundere about it and say that it does not matter to him.

Yuji = Geto. Megumi = Gojo. Before Geto embraced the dark side, he saw himself as responsible for saving everyone, and when he had to finally deal some truly irredeemable ppl, he snapped. I think Megumi and Gojo's selfishness in JJK reflects the morality of the sorcerers in general. I think there's a clear streak of selfishness in almost everybody even Yuta's heroism isn't based in altruism. Yuta acknowledges that saving ppl, especially those close to him, reinforces his self worth and his desire to live. It's all to say that Yuji is the only real oddball. He's been pushed to the point where saving ppl is his identity and he considers his own life forfeit. Tangent: I don't think this comes up much but Yuji lost his closest relative and threw himself into a world of death and danger. I know it's kind of obvious that every sorcerer is a bit broken, but for yuji it seems so basic...he hasn't at all allowed himself to grieve and is letting a bunch of deaths that aren't really* his fault weigh on his mind. After the culling games, the story might need a time skip, just so we get a version of Yuji that is more healthily selfish, forgives himself for not being stronger, and doesn't blame himself for everything that goes wrong. Idk

I honestly think he's just cynical, pragmatic, and scared. I think he's a decent person but can be scared and has alot of underlying issues. He may lack self confidence moreso than Yuta did initially. But he has a strict moral code. He COULD be a villain if taken to it's extreme. Like Goto to a lesser extent he wants to create a world of good people. I can see where Fushigoro is coming from tbh.

Also I think your definition of goodness is funky. Unless you simply mean goodness means "save everybody". That's the stereotypical Shonen main character trait but in the world of JJK, it's proven to be impossible to save everybody time and time again. If goodness is defined by trying to save everybody in a world where you can't, someone aspiring to be good would go insane (like Geto). I'd argue that literally no character in JJK qualifies as a good person in the way you defined other than Yuji and pre-snap Geto. Maybe Toge, but I think Toge and Nanami understand their limitations and don't aspire to save everybody. I assert if you know you can't save everybody, then who you save, is going to be according to some subjective criteria. Being unaware of your own criteria for saving ppl doesn't make you a better person than someone who understands theirs.

Definitely an interesting analysis. Megumi's morality matches the environment, like a leaf in the wind. The more calm and peaceful the wind, or the better the environment, the more his morals seem to reflect those of normal society. But when put in turbulent winds, or situations where there is chaos and mayhem, he loses scruples to exact what he feels is right in the situation. Megumi's actions match those of the situation. Probably because that's what he feels is necessary to control the outcome. Unfortunately, in his attempt to control the outcome, he might lose control of himself.

i think it's worth noting that megumi's philosophy is set across from yuji's in terms not of morality, but healthiness. yuji's philosophy is good, but self-destructive and self-denying. megumi's is ambiguous, but the fact is you really can't save everyone. you really do have to make choices. so his acceptance of his contradictions is ultimately going to make him feel more "whole" to himself than yuji, who can only live if he can reconcile his beliefs with the effects he has on the world. megumi's apparent apathy about being "good" could also be considered humility: none of us are good people. all we can ever strive for is to do what we feel is right when we can. the idea that any one person could be a perfect paragon requires seeing that person as both more than human -- capable of more than a human is -- and also less than a human -- without a human's needs. jujutsu kaisen is constantly portraying its strongest and wisest figures on the side of humanity -- gojo, tsukumo, tengen -- as people who are fundamentally selfish. not in the sense that they believe in a war of all against all to cull the weak the way kenjaku does, but because they have accepted their own humanity and will not claim to be good, despite being some of the greatest forces for good in the setting. they're not heroes, they're sorcerors.

The one thing about gojo is that gojo was born strong. With a strong CT that keep his body most times making him still mentally check well unlike those that weren't blessed like him will start having a cruel mindset just a cheap way to survive. And can affect them until the rest of their lives. And people surrounding them too. They experience more PTSD that gojo rarely gets. Except for the toji arc.
