I wish I had DNFd that one. I envy that you were able to convince yourself to put it down.

I read The Essex Serpent a few years ago and remember disliking it. All I remember from the book is I was bored out of my mind for most of it, and it attempted to discuss some bigger ideas but kept getting distracted and nothing ever came of it. So your review of her non-fiction definitely tracks with my experience

I DNF’d The Essex Serpent at 17% (73 pages in), so ummm, so you might want to start that book with some super low expectations😖

I DNF'd She Who Became the Sun when I first tried reading it (I was also so bored and falling asleep). But last year I gave it another chance with better expectations and loved it! I think it's a book you have to be in the mood for and take slow. Also treat it as a historical fiction rather than a fantasy since the fantasy elements are so small.

I "soft dnfed" SWBTS whenever it came out, I've sat at the 50% mark for years, probably never going back to it to be fair!

I also dnf’d it around the same point! I wanted to love it so bad but I was so bored and didn’t care! And you’re so right that it all felt shoved on the character and she didn’t feel real or fleshed out

Thanks again, Meg, another very fun video. I definitely sympathize with you DNF’ing that book, I think you gave it one hell of an effort, probably more than I would’ve done if I did not like a book. Some bad luck in this video, but at least you crossed those off your list. Funny review of Essex Girls, you made a lot of sense. And once again you provided some hilarious reality TV segments, thank you for those.

I wasn't a fan of She Who Became the Sun either. And it sounds like you DNF'ed before the out of nowhere fisting scene. Lucky. Like that's truly the only thing I remember from that book which is probably not a good sign.

I'm sorry, I read the whole book a few years back and this has just blown my mind.😂😂😂 Did not recall that AT. ALL. I gave it a 3* which in reality is more a 2* looking back, and I donated it to the library soon after reading it, so out of sight out of mind I guess 😅

I also dnf'd She Who Became The Sun because it was so boring. I think I barely made it 130 pages in. I picked it up a couple months after finishing the Poppy War trilogy because of how much I loved those books and it just didn't compare at all.

I really liked SWBTS but it was a slow read. I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone, I liked the myth making feel, the fact that it feels a bit unreal made it work for me. I haven’t read the Poppy War yet so perhaps I’ll finish off this duology before starting that.

When I read this (back when it first came out) I was SO SAD that I didn't like it because I really wanted to. I enjoyed the first part, and then as the story went on it just got more military based and more boring, although I did push myself to finish it. Kind of glad I'm not the only one who didn't quite enjoy it though.

I wish I'd DNF'd SHBTS because i literally remember nothing (apart from the fisting of course) and even at time had no idea what i was meant to be thinking/ picturing/feeling etc. I DNF'd Essex Serpent about 5 pages in... the boring (to me) writing was an instantaneous no 😂 sorry this was all so unsuccessful for you 😭
